Is it considered slovenly to write names on everything or do I have to sew labels on like a saddo?

I have written names on so far for dd1 but she only had coat/gloves/scarf combo for playgroup

School 'strongly recommend sewn in labels'

will my card be marked as Sloth if I send her in with marker pen tags on her cardigan?

I did 3 trousers, 3 jumpers, 4 shirts, pe kit and pe bag, tooak me no more than 1 hour.

snowleopard · 18/07/2007 13:40

Self-confessed saddo here. I love sewing them on all nice and neat, it's something I sit down to do of an evening when I've bought new clothes for DS. But then I enjoy sewing.

However I know for a fact that most people think I'mn a loon to do it. Most people I know just write on the label.

purpleturtle · 18/07/2007 13:40

Northerner, I'm actually using name tapes that my MIL has used for her 3, although most of them are leftover unused ones. As I have the grandchildren with the same surname I have been given the tapes. Genius!

Even simpler than that I have a name stamp so one click and the clothes are labelled.

Its a bit like a date stamp or address stamp.

Bought them (one each for DS and DD) from Lidl for about 2.99 -it comes with all the letters so you can type-set whatever you like on it. Not sure where else you can buy them though as Lidl only have them occasionally.

purpleturtle · 18/07/2007 13:40

oops

MaureenMcGonagall · 18/07/2007 13:41

Betty! Thats fantastic - I want one of those!

stealthsquiggle · 18/07/2007 13:41

I did like sewing them in for DS. I would like doing it for DD, if I had time - DD goes to nursery in a mix of her own stuff and DS's hand-me-downs and it is v. noticeable that the only things with name tapes in are the hand-me-downs...

Did use iron on (the ink-transfer ones rather than the tapes) for most of DS's school stuff and have just realised that means I probably won't be able to sell them on to anyone - unless someone knows of a foolproof method of removing them after they have survived a year's washing?!

saggermakersknockturnalley · 18/07/2007 13:42

I just buy a dozen pairs of the same colour socks. You don't even have to worry about the sock fairy getting them then.

DrNortherner · 18/07/2007 13:42

What reception age kid has different socks for PE?

BettySpaghetti · 18/07/2007 13:43

It is fantastic Maureen.

Apparently Lakeland did them years ago but stopped -don't know why as they are ideal.

snowleopard · 18/07/2007 13:43

Hey name-label tip for those with more than one DC (I can't do this yet as only have the one). Order the tapes with two first names or a series of initials eg "John Jane Smith" / "J D A Smith", then they can be used for any of your kids by folding away the bit you don't need as you sew.

Greensleeves · 18/07/2007 13:44

slovenly IMO, sewn ones much nicer

stealthsquiggle · 18/07/2007 13:46

DrN - my reception age child has different socks for PE and different again for ballet. Plus they go swimming, so they are changing socks all the time and they would get lost if not named.

Here you go - for the slovenly amongst you (although a lot more expensive than the ones I bought from Lidl.

(If you Google name stamps for clothing you get lots more)

MaureenMcGonagall · 18/07/2007 13:50

Noooooo! Don't do it! Stick to being slovenly, its much nicer and you have sooo much more time on your hands because you're not sewing!

stealthsquiggle · 18/07/2007 13:51

easy2name for nametapes and stickers - these people for clip-on ones.

Me? Obsessive? surely not

MaureenMcGonagall · 18/07/2007 13:54

I wonder if you can buy ironable paper to go in the printer? Oh look at me, I'm turing now!

fortyplus · 18/07/2007 13:59

Children LOVE choosing the style and colour for the sew in labels - and ooH! the excitement when they turn up - 72 little labels with your very own name on them. Made going to 'big school' very exciting!

littleolwinedrinkerme · 18/07/2007 14:12

Bic biro - black. Perfect.

ChudleyMintonCanons · 18/07/2007 14:18

i like sewing them in, my DC have colour co-ordinated cash's tapes and sticky labels so i don't have to bother reading them, i know by the colour. DS1 is blue, DS2 green, DD red. [saddo]

I do resort to biro/black marker when i'm in a rush tho'

oliveoil · 18/07/2007 14:20

now fortyplus has me wavering now as I know that dd1 would be beside herself with joy at a pile of labels with her name on
