why hasn't my DS been moved up a book band

hoping that maybe some teachers could shed some light on this

My DS has just started in year 1. Last year he did really well in his reading and finished reception on MAGENTA band. He got "excelling" at reading in his end of year report. I was led to believe that MAGENTA band was the highest you could go up to in reception.

Anyway 2 other parents have now told me that their children have been moved onto MAGNOLIA band. DS is still bringing home MAGENTA books and honestly I think they are too easy for him. I can't understand why if other children have been moved up he hasn't been also as he was excelling in reception. He knows all his letters and can read lots of words.

I defiantly will be having a word with his teacher but just wondering if this is normal. Would it be ok for me to ask to see a MAGNOLIA book as I am sure he is ready to read them too.

I have read the whole thread and without doubt this is truly one of the most hilarious I've ever come across. The OP is clearly a top class wind-up merchant and boy am I loving it!

My DS must use the same phonics as your DC crayola - yesterday it was " oo oo poo on my shoe"

VIOLETsunflower · 23/09/2016 13:51

I just did some checking and I do think it could be the polygon approach.

So Cat would have an oval as its first letter, with ears and a tail, to help prompt the reader.

VIOLETsunflower · 23/09/2016 13:53

In which case the band colours refer to the hues and tones of the various polygons used for each of the 27 letters.

Trust me you'll wish you hadn't wished for MAGNOLIA once you're ds is on it. So bloody dull! Ds is now on HOME AND HEARTH and they're a little more gritty.

Is there a new one since I went to school? Wink

I am so sorry that we didn't pick up on this brilliant post op .
There seems to be a mixture of what he brings home. Today it's Colin's big cat but sometimes it's the Oxford reading tree and gin.
Love it, no reading books in sightGrin

KatoPotato · 23/09/2016 16:45

PIV books? I'm fresh out of the conception boards...

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/09/2016 16:49

Gin?!

tireddotcom72 · 23/09/2016 18:22

As a teacher I find gin books a refreshing change from biff chip and kipper but as a parent I think vodka is preferable

Don't understand why people need to post these on primary board?
I'm such a stiff, I don't find it funny at all.

VIOLETsunflower · 23/09/2016 19:03

Wrt PVC; if it's not the polygon approach, it could be the PANTONE approach, hence the wide range of hues.

Go on, give it a try. Crack a smile.

Tiggywinkler · 23/09/2016 20:12

Are PVC reading books wipe-clean?

Going to suggest them to my Head if so; tired of the plebeian variety coming back covered in RED wine stains.

jobrum · 23/09/2016 20:18

Once children have the basics of phonics they can move onto the OSBORNE AND LITTLE books. The paterns and at the more advanced level, flocked and anaglypta texture really do add another dimension to reading. Nothing beats hearing your dc read their first anaglypta words.

crayolala · 23/09/2016 21:15

Well he brought 2 books home instead of the usual 1 today so I think his teacher is keen for him to move up to MAGNOLIA too.

Stop typing the colours in capitals. It's wrong you dive need to do that.

Ohflippinheck · 23/09/2016 21:28

I hope you've complained to the school that the colours aren't in caps OP.
