why hasn't my DS been moved up a book band

hoping that maybe some teachers could shed some light on this

My DS has just started in year 1. Last year he did really well in his reading and finished reception on MAGENTA band. He got "excelling" at reading in his end of year report. I was led to believe that MAGENTA band was the highest you could go up to in reception.

Anyway 2 other parents have now told me that their children have been moved onto MAGNOLIA band. DS is still bringing home MAGENTA books and honestly I think they are too easy for him. I can't understand why if other children have been moved up he hasn't been also as he was excelling in reception. He knows all his letters and can read lots of words.

I defiantly will be having a word with his teacher but just wondering if this is normal. Would it be ok for me to ask to see a MAGNOLIA book as I am sure he is ready to read them too.

Of course colours are written in capitals. Why are other posters writing them in capitals otherwise

No one has ever reached MAHOGANY. Just Will Self and Stephen Hawkin.

Are there book bands for WASP, WINE and WALL?

Coconut0il · 22/09/2016 22:22

GrinExcellent thread OP. Cheered me right up!

Duckafuck · 22/09/2016 22:27

I await the day my 4 month old will present me with a book banded CERULEAN then I will know she has truly excelled in her reading skills, she currently only just manages band LELLO (oh the shame) but I have high hopes for progress.

My ds is now on INFRARED, as ULTRAVIOLET was too easy for him. We're so proud. Grin

WALLPAPER Grin

SueDunome · 22/09/2016 22:37

Please don't be too defiant when you speak to the teacher.

jobrum · 22/09/2016 23:10

suedunome Grin. This thread has made me smile.

MidniteScribbler · 23/09/2016 02:05

I hope you aren't teaching him spelling. Or should that be SPELLING? A subjects supposed to be in capitals as well?

I'm so confused. My whole life I've been writing colours in lower case. Has my whole life been a lie?

rollonthesummer · 23/09/2016 09:12

Good luck with the defiance.

Are all describing words written in capitals or just colours?

MephistoMarley · 23/09/2016 09:15

Don't speak to the teacher defiantly, they might think you're a troublemaker.

I think this is a parody of the other reading band threads. Am I right?

HateSummer · 23/09/2016 09:19

Dear OP,

Reading levels mean shit all.

Love from,

Experienced mother.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/09/2016 09:28

Thank you OP. Just the right "pick me up" I needed Grin

--maybe he takes his language skills after his mother who says "defiantly"
when she means "definitely"--

Ok so I spoke to his teacher this morning who said that he is not ready to move up to MAGNOLIA books yet as he needs to work on blending his PVC words. I don't know what this means

SHINY BLACK PVC or TRANSPARENT CVC?

Sorry, I jest, I'm in stitches over the colours!

I did fine art and I'm not even sure what MYRTLE is!

It will be CVC words. Consonant/ vowel/ consonant. So can he 'read' piv, sut, mit for example, all nonsense CVC words. If he can, he is secure with his phonetic basics and so could move onto more challenging books.

It's tough as I agree that reading should be for pleasure. Personally I feel these skills should be worked on separately as many children use other methods for reading. Phonics is necessary but I think can be 'taught' in other ways.

VIOLETsunflower · 23/09/2016 09:43

To clarify, home school reading books not laboured over. Phonics learnt through phonic games etc.

VIOLETsunflower · 23/09/2016 09:44

Bollocks even my spell check gets CVC!

*TRANSPARENT PVC.

Moment has gone...

crayolala · 23/09/2016 09:45

She defiantly said PVC not CVC.
