why hasn't my DS been moved up a book band

hoping that maybe some teachers could shed some light on this

My DS has just started in year 1. Last year he did really well in his reading and finished reception on MAGENTA band. He got "excelling" at reading in his end of year report. I was led to believe that MAGENTA band was the highest you could go up to in reception.

Anyway 2 other parents have now told me that their children have been moved onto MAGNOLIA band. DS is still bringing home MAGENTA books and honestly I think they are too easy for him. I can't understand why if other children have been moved up he hasn't been also as he was excelling in reception. He knows all his letters and can read lots of words.

I defiantly will be having a word with his teacher but just wondering if this is normal. Would it be ok for me to ask to see a MAGNOLIA book as I am sure he is ready to read them too.

Absolutely roaring here. Sterling work, chaps.

Peanutbutterpussycat · 24/09/2016 08:25

Your reading scheme sounds like Yankee candles :)

Ours is plain old pink red yellow etc and I feel short changed.

My above average dd is still on red books as is a lazy madam when it comes to reading but after this thread I'm defiantly going to speak to her year one teacher as I'm sure I know better than she does Wink

Don't get caught up with colours, some dc in my dd's class can't read at all so I think it's a massive spectrum and the teacher is still getting to know the children and their ability.
You absolutely do not want to be THAT parent.

spanieleyes · 24/09/2016 09:14

Red Planet is a Turquoise level book, but non decodable and rather old!
Gran's is a Level 6 Orange book and decodable.

No magenta in sight!

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 24/09/2016 09:32

Spaniel....but put the RED and the BLUE together and what do you get?

crayolala · 24/09/2016 09:39

MAGENTA is the school's own banding.

I guess the reason the colours aren't in capitals is as pointed out the books are old so probably before it started happening.

The capitalised colours are hurting my head

Do you always capitalise colours or just the reading scheme colours? Do you shout the colours when you are discussing them?

Meadows76 · 24/09/2016 11:19

Yes, please, why do you 'always' put colours in caps?

catkind · 24/09/2016 11:27

Didn't you know AntiBoop, Meadows, you always have to shout reading levels. It's important to make sure that all the other parents know your child has MAROON. You never know, one day they might even have good enough reading comprehension to spot a spoof thread on a parenting forum.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/09/2016 13:03

Crayolala - it is NOT normal to write the colours in capitals. I have books published this year, and newspapers published this week, and in NONE of them are the colours written in capitals.

You are completely wrong about this.

Wonderflonium · 24/09/2016 13:31

No, colours definitely have to be capitalised. Have attached evidence.

TodaysAGoodDay · 24/09/2016 13:34

Please stop writing in CAPITALS!! My head hurts now.

Please OP!

The rest of you are hilarious by the way Grin

crayolala · 24/09/2016 14:32

SDT we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one! I don't write "not" or "none" in capitals like you do so there's obviously different ways of doing things!

Well done on having books published btw. I'd love to write a book

Genius! I love this thread Grin

GplanAddict · 24/09/2016 15:21

I always take an aspirin before the school run just in case the subject of book bands comes up.

I thought this was normal??

Meadows76 · 24/09/2016 15:22

SDT we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one! I don't write "not" or "none" in capitals like you do so there's obviously different ways of doing things! No, not different ways. SDT is SHOUTING the words NOT and NONE because they are do bloody frustrated thst you think you have to SHOUT out the colours. Last time I shouted out colours I was learning the order so I could sing a fucking rainbow.

VIOLETsunflower · 24/09/2016 15:34

I have a feeling you might have crayolala! ;)

BackwardElephants · 24/09/2016 15:35

Having researched this, it appears that actually MAGENTA doesn't actually exist.
MAGENTA is an 'extra-spectral color', meaning that it is not found in the visible spectrum of light. ... The cone cells within our eyes are responsible for the colours we see, but are only sensitive to RED, GREEN and BLUE light.

so actually, the whole book band colouring scheme is a TOTAL LIE!!

VIOLETsunflower · 24/09/2016 15:37

Anyone who HAS actually DEALT with organising book banding within a school KNOWS there's a fair level of shouting across the resource room about who has dumped all the books back in one muddle ignoring the COLOURS.

BackwardElephants · 24/09/2016 15:39

But there are only three TRUE COLOURS! Your brain is LYING to you!mth rebook bands are LYING to you! Does any child ever really move on from BLUE, GREEN or RED?

BackwardElephants · 24/09/2016 15:40
VIOLETsunflower · 24/09/2016 15:42

The LIGHT colour system is a totally different banding spectrum.

I'm pretty sure the Op's school uses the PAINT colour banding spectrum? They are totally incompatible.

(Happy to be corrected.)

VIOLETsunflower · 24/09/2016 15:54

...and here too they do seem to shout the colors.

crayolala · 24/09/2016 15:57

I don't know about extra spectral colours but I can assure you all that MAGENTA defiantly exists. I know this because there is a MAGENTA sticker on the RED planet.

Meadows76 · 24/09/2016 15:59

Ok good, you are still here OP. Please answer as several people above asked, why do you capitalise colours? I'm intrigued and considering legal action against my school
