why hasn't my DS been moved up a book band

hoping that maybe some teachers could shed some light on this

My DS has just started in year 1. Last year he did really well in his reading and finished reception on MAGENTA band. He got "excelling" at reading in his end of year report. I was led to believe that MAGENTA band was the highest you could go up to in reception.

Anyway 2 other parents have now told me that their children have been moved onto MAGNOLIA band. DS is still bringing home MAGENTA books and honestly I think they are too easy for him. I can't understand why if other children have been moved up he hasn't been also as he was excelling in reception. He knows all his letters and can read lots of words.

I defiantly will be having a word with his teacher but just wondering if this is normal. Would it be ok for me to ask to see a MAGNOLIA book as I am sure he is ready to read them too.

Why do you keep shouting colours

Can you get magnolia stickers? Or are the just creamGrin

MephistoMarley · 22/09/2016 21:25

Are you sure? I THINK maybe you HAVE

crayolala · 22/09/2016 21:29

Colours are supposed to be written in capitals

We've had this. I was really umming and ahhing about asking the teacher but I just called them, they tested him the next day and he's gone up 10 levels!
I think he had just slipped through the net.
Worth keeping in touch with the teacher I think.

Is the reading scheme Dulux? My son's on that and he has just been moved from Battleship Grey and on to Antique White. Grin.

Sorry OP if you are genuine, I can't see a reading scheme with those levels. It does seem a bit unlikely to have magenta, magnolia and mauve.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 22/09/2016 21:35

are you sure he's not bring home PAINT CHARTS?

Grin
MrsKCastle · 22/09/2016 21:36

I'm so pleased that he can knows his letters and can read 'lots of words'. And he's only just out of reception! I reckon he'll be on MAUVE books in no time.

thisagain · 22/09/2016 21:36

"Colours are supposed to be written in capitals"! Hmm

ShoeEatingMonster · 22/09/2016 21:36

Colours are supposed to be written in capitals

Since when?! Hmm

LittleBearPad · 22/09/2016 21:39

I think he'll be on ELEPHANTS BREATH within the month OP. Don't worry.

Frumious · 22/09/2016 21:41

My DC brought home an ELEPHANT'S BREATH and a FRENCH GREY book home last week.
Imagine my surprise...? I wasn't expecting them to reach such heights til at least Y3

JoyceDivision · 22/09/2016 21:41

Colours are supposed to be written in capitals?

No, animals are all supposed to be written in italics.

Honest

crayolala · 22/09/2016 21:44

I have found a list of the book bands.

MAROON
MIDNIGHT BLUE
MAGENTA
MAGNOLIA
MAUVE
MINT GREEN
MOSS GREEN
MUSTARD

OP do you know if your school is part of the accelerated reading programme? My DC's school has started that this year and their books are all colour coded too, however there are also different levels within each colour band. Their comprehension is tested and a lot of the children tend to fall down where the books don't interest them. I believe they have to get 80% and above to hit the comprehension target. Each book within each colour band has a certain number of points depending on the complexity of language, subject etc. When they have reached a target number of points they then can move up colour band. ORT L8 could be spread across 2 colour bands on the AR scheme depending on content for example.

ilovesooty · 22/09/2016 21:47

I'm finding it difficult to take this seriously.

crayolala · 22/09/2016 21:52

To be honest I don't know why the school has chosen those colours

It did cause problems last year when people thought their DCs had been moved back down a couple of bands. Turned out the TA was sending home MAROON instead of MAGENTA by mistake because the stickers are such a similar colour

OP posts:
MaryField · 22/09/2016 21:53

Who knew there were so many colours beginning with 'M'?

MaryField · 22/09/2016 21:54

Mocha, Mushroom... the list goes on

rollonthesummer · 22/09/2016 21:55

MYRTLE GrinGrin

Tiggywinkler · 22/09/2016 21:55

Fuck me, I'm a year 1 teacher and I had no idea that I was supposed to yell colours out like a deranged foghorn.

OP, has he been benchmarked?

Loving your imaginative book band colours btw, I'm basically using pink, red and the occasional blue at this stage in the proceedings!

WipsGlitter · 22/09/2016 21:57

Colours are not written all in capitals. Why on earth would you think that?

Ohflippinheck · 22/09/2016 22:01

Just worry whence comes home with
MANGE
MINGE or
MURKY

RatOnnaStick · 22/09/2016 22:04

Grin. My son was on MLUE last term but has been put back to MELLOW now he's started year 1. I long for the days he reaches MAGENTA.

BackwardElephants · 22/09/2016 22:04

Hang on. Op user name is crayon a and she is obsessed with colours. Or am I the last one to pick up on the joke? Blush

tireddotcom72 · 22/09/2016 22:05

Could you tell us the words your child reads? I'm new to reception this year and really need to know where my class need to be heading for - unfortunately our school use lilac pink red yellow book bands but I'm thinking your scheme sounds far more interesting.
