why hasn't my DS been moved up a book band

hoping that maybe some teachers could shed some light on this

My DS has just started in year 1. Last year he did really well in his reading and finished reception on MAGENTA band. He got "excelling" at reading in his end of year report. I was led to believe that MAGENTA band was the highest you could go up to in reception.

Anyway 2 other parents have now told me that their children have been moved onto MAGNOLIA band. DS is still bringing home MAGENTA books and honestly I think they are too easy for him. I can't understand why if other children have been moved up he hasn't been also as he was excelling in reception. He knows all his letters and can read lots of words.

I defiantly will be having a word with his teacher but just wondering if this is normal. Would it be ok for me to ask to see a MAGNOLIA book as I am sure he is ready to read them too.

crayolala, if I can type through my tears I think I can understand why you are getting confused having spotted photos of the actual books your DS brought home.

I have some familiarity with the colour-bandings you mention. Red Planet looks to be Churlish Green. Now the thing about Churlish Green is that it gets a lot brighter under some artificial light so a new teacher might easily confuse it for LIME. Could that be what has happened; it is an easy mistake if you are a comparatively young teacher and haven't had to look at the chart very often, if at all?

Thank-you

Update.

The school have changed reading schemes and now are using the DUKE OF EDINBURGH scheme.

DS has brought home 2 new books, see attached.

Great news crayolala.

madcats I think you mean CHURLISH GREEN. Hth.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 26/09/2016 17:33

Oh shit. Now I'm going to have to report myself. That should have been GREEEN.

TheTyrannyOfMAGENTA · 26/09/2016 18:01

That's fantastic crayolala, I do hope the teacher found my links informative.
However, I do think they should have thought through their new scheme before IMPLEMENTATION.
As above, they really should be using the PIGMENT on the SPECTRUM, otherwise they are going to come across more COLOUR issues.

Epic caps lock fail; duly admonished!

GplanAddict · 26/09/2016 20:36

Looks like MICONIUM to me, but my dicktionary asked me if I wanted to 'add' MICONIUM it so suspect the Duke has implemented bandings without using spell checker. Well done to your lad though, proud moments!!

crayolala · 26/09/2016 20:45

I'm not too impressed with the DUKE OF EDINBURGH scheme if I'm honest. DS's books are full of xenophobia. I think I'd like him to go back onto MAGENTA books after all

I think I need to complain to school about my DD's reading book. I have no idea how this has happened but they have NOT capitalised the colour

Well as they say you have to be careful what you wash for Crayola!

crayolala · 26/09/2016 21:09

I don't have to wash for anything, I have the wipe clean PVC books remember

Best thread I have read in a long time, well done OP!

Zoflorabore · 17/12/2016 08:16

Me too ;) very entertaining, though the colour on the side of book 2 is yellow and is average for year one so I wouldn't worry at this point.

To those asking about knowing the level of their children, in Y1 teachers are likely to be assessing their phonics in daily sessions and reading with each group in guided reading once a week. There is not always time to read with children individually but their reading is always being assessed.
