Have a go at this mini Key Stage 2 SATs test.

See if you'd pass.

I think it's incredibly important that all 10 year olds know what subordinating conjunctions, modal verbs and determiners are because I use these terms on a daily basis in my actual daily grown up life.

In fact, I'm delighted that my kids will be spending more time learning to label parts of speech and consequently less time on largely irrelevant stuff like computer programming, art, developing social skills, music, history, geography etc. The sort of things that barely impacts on my actual daily grown up life as I work alongside other people, use computers every day, travel, work as a social scientist, appreciate a wide range of cultural experiences such as music on the radio, plays, art galleries .......

While I totally get the need for kids to learn good spelling, punctuation and grammar, somehow I can't get my head round the feeling that things have just gone nuts. Firstly, learning to label grammar parts is not the same as learning to use good grammar. Secondly, learning to label grammar parts at the expense of learning all the other much more useful stuff seems crazy.

Scary? Hmm

The answer has been discussed repeatedly - it's the emphasis on terminology over usage and understanding which is objectionable, not the terminology itself.

Have you got a link to the German curriculum for 6 year olds please?

teacherwith2kids · 13/02/2016 14:45

The other point is that some of the terminology is ... invented. 'Fronted adverbial', anyone?

winkywinkola · 13/02/2016 15:13

Why can't you combine terminology over usage?

winkywinkola · 13/02/2016 15:13

WITH usage I mean.

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 15:22

Isn't it easier to discuss correct usage if you have the terminology?

I appreciate for this year's year 6 it's hard because there's not much time, but I really think future learners will pick this up in no time at all.

GenevaMaybe · 13/02/2016 15:28

I have a first class languages & linguistics degree and I got 70%. Grim

Feenie · 13/02/2016 15:32

We can, winky - but the test does not.

Feenie · 13/02/2016 15:33

Are you a primary school teacher, Dorothy? Because there isn't a single primary school teacher on this thread so far which agrees with that view.

Not one.

Feenie · 13/02/2016 15:34

Who.

Grrr.

I'm an MFL teacher and pupils pick up this terminology in my classroom, often stating they wish they'd learnt this earlier.

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 15:52

German curriculum

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 16:24

I don't know why people say it's largely made up.

this is a German website, available in English or German, with all this grammar and more.

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 16:29

For the German curriculum this is more equivalent in age to year 6. All the terminology is there.

Feenie · 13/02/2016 16:31

At 5, Dorothy?

So not a primary school teacher then. The thread is full of pretty well-respected primary school teachers, including at least two Literacy coordinators - yet no one supports the test or the curriculum as it stands.

Maybe one will be along soon. I doubt it though.

Feenie · 13/02/2016 16:32

Your curriculum link isn't working.

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 16:33

Have you tried the link in my 16.29 post?

What do you mean by "at five"?

Feenie · 13/02/2016 16:33

Thanks for the link which you say is equivalent to Y6, but I asked for a link to the grammar expectations for 6 year olds.

Feenie · 13/02/2016 16:35

At 5 years old?

No, i didn't try that link - it's not what I asked for.

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 16:35

The original post was about expectations in year 6, therefore my link which shows there are the same and higher expectations in Germany.

Feenie · 13/02/2016 16:38

Ah, I see. I am the only poster who asked for a link afaik.

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 16:38

Just searching now, hang on

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 16:44

Could you just remind me/post a link what they need to know age 6 in England now please?

DorothyL · 13/02/2016 16:50

Is this it?
