Have a go at this mini Key Stage 2 SATs test.

See if you'd pass.

I think it's incredibly important that all 10 year olds know what subordinating conjunctions, modal verbs and determiners are because I use these terms on a daily basis in my actual daily grown up life.

In fact, I'm delighted that my kids will be spending more time learning to label parts of speech and consequently less time on largely irrelevant stuff like computer programming, art, developing social skills, music, history, geography etc. The sort of things that barely impacts on my actual daily grown up life as I work alongside other people, use computers every day, travel, work as a social scientist, appreciate a wide range of cultural experiences such as music on the radio, plays, art galleries .......

While I totally get the need for kids to learn good spelling, punctuation and grammar, somehow I can't get my head round the feeling that things have just gone nuts. Firstly, learning to label grammar parts is not the same as learning to use good grammar. Secondly, learning to label grammar parts at the expense of learning all the other much more useful stuff seems crazy.

Well this was a load of bollocks Grin My 17 yo who is expected to get A at A Level in English Language and Literature got 20% whilst my 13 yo who has learning disabilities got 50%. I got 60%. I have a grade B English O level and a CSE grade 4 for English Confused

Just shows this mini test is just pot luck.

I'm a random secondary MFL teacher, now teaching Year 6, so I think I'm well placed to say ks2 SATs really are a load of bollocks that absolutely no-one cares about except Ofsted.

And what's your position regarding exclamatory sentences in Year 2 writing, leccy?

So far it's dfe 1, Cambridge dictionary online 2 Grin

Shockingly stupid test, ridiculously technical questions, yet you have a 50% chance of getting some of them right! I got a high score so reckon I had lots of lucky guesses as I had no idea what the answers were.

Slippersandacuppa · 17/02/2016 21:49

And pressed too soon...

I vividly remember being taught about 'could have' vs 'could of'.

They're under so much pressure Sad

Slippersandacuppa · 17/02/2016 21:51

What?? It was right there! 'Tinterweb ate my first post Shock

Anyway, I said that I got 80%, which was a combination of total fluke and process of elimination. I absolutely did not learn any of those words at school.

I have a child in Year 1 who probably would only understand as far as exclamatory sentences have an exclamation point.
I think she is a bit young to be chucking in declaratives and imperatives. There really is no need for all this jargon for young children.
