Feeling more nervous than DS2!

He's 'borderline', particularly in Literacy. He'll be so happy if he gets a 4 (as will I!) so off he went just now with me offering my last minute bon mots ('Read carefully! Most of the answers are in the text! If it doesn't make sense, you've not read it properly' etc).

I doubt the teacher will have had the opportunity to give anyone's paper more than a glance simbo they are whisked away pretty quickly I'm afraid.

simbo · 17/05/2012 21:00

thanks, I feared as much. She must have thought he was bluffing when he claimed to have got so many wrong.

littlelegsmum · 17/05/2012 21:18

Lots of Luck to those DC with more tests left to do. Grin

startail · 17/05/2012 21:33

Feenie, that's it exactly. DD2 has done lots of extra maths outside normal lesson time.

DD2 may well get L6, but no way is has she been working at that level long enough that DD1s senior school maths teacher would give it her. DD1 has worked her socks of to ring a L7 out of her in Y9.

startail · 17/05/2012 21:42

Sadly Keeponkeeping on has hit the nail on the head. The reporting limit for league tables is 10 or 11 DCs. In schools that size one child's results makes a huge difference in percentage terms.

bubby64 · 17/05/2012 21:45

My 2 seem quite confident with the whole weeks worth of SATs except DS2 with the spelling (always been his downfall). They have been really surprised when I casually mentioned some of the questions from their exams "who have you been talking too, has Mrs J (class teacher) rung you up??" "No", says I, all innocent like,"just another magical mum skill!".

dovebird · 17/05/2012 22:08

why on earth do parents worry about sats?

I am loving this thread!!!!

DD is in Yr 2, doesn't do sats (independent school), but I am enjoying reading all about them.

Personally, I think you should all be bloody proud of your kids, they sound great.

Will be tuning in later for the next installment. Wine

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 17/05/2012 22:21

Why on earth post that opinion on this thread?

Merrylegs · 17/05/2012 22:34

Do keep up, dovebird Grin

(KTk9 - DD is also at an independent school but they have done SATS, so never say never.......)

seeker · 17/05/2012 22:54

I used to do this thing with mine when they were little of pretending to open a little window in their foreheads and tell them what they were thinking. I did it on Monday with ds and asked him specific questions about the reading test, and just for a moment he believed me, like he used to when he was 4. Then he said "Oh, I get it- mumsnet!"

ampere · 17/05/2012 22:55

Ktk9- thanks re 'our kids' and enjoying the thread. It's good, isn't it?- I'm not so much 'proud' of DS for anything he's achieved/not achieved. I'm proud of him for going with the flow, accepting that this is the way things are; here are some tests everyone wants you to do as well as you can with. And getting on with it.

Your DC will face a different set of hurdles, as you don't need me to point out. My impression is that your DC, being private, will be measured against each other to a far greater extent than any state school is allowed to, where the DC are measured against national targets. Yours will be expected to stand alone and be wholly accountable for their achievements/non-achievements, fewer 'quarters' will be given, no 'excuses' entertained... at least, that's a thing I'd be feeling I was paying for as a parent!

As I have stated earlier, I believe there is some merit in placing a leetle more rigour in the path of our DC- I think it's daft that for the vast majority of our state DC, the first encounter they have with sit down/shut up exams are in Y6 which I feel is a bit late. And many here have expressed surprise at how much their DC have wanted to strut their stuff!

Rather late to this tonight - have just come back from celebrating end of SATs at Yo Sushi, which was fab. I pretended to be Miranda getting her beads caught in the conveyer belt, much to DS1's embarrassment. He said Test B was easier than Test A, he finished earlier and had time to check over qus 1-20. Am quite surprised, having seen some of the questions on here - they don't sound like his sort of thing at all ( though he is good at inverses). But am not going to quiz him - will just live in joyful ignorance until we get the results. And they are OVER! Huzzah!!

Wid · 17/05/2012 23:54

Hi
Can anyone help please? DS1 announced today that he's doing L6 in English and Maths on Mon/Tues. Is there anywhere online that has L6 papers, so I can have a look? He's been cool so far, but I can see some nerves developing and I'd like to know what he's got to face. Many thanks

noraa · 18/05/2012 09:21

can anybody tell when will they tell the results of the Sats?

dovebird · 18/05/2012 09:32

because i really can't understand why the parents get their knickers in such a twist over this.
not a dig just an honest question

Voidka · 18/05/2012 09:36

I am not worried - DS is worried about them and I am worried about him.

BrigitBigKnickers · 18/05/2012 09:50

Results usually arrive back at the school at the end of June.

level 6 maths and english past papers are on this page.

ampere · 18/05/2012 10:50

dovebird with repect, we have here 32 pages of the reasons why the SATS are considered important by many; and some arguments as to why others think they 'don't matter'..

You might not 'agree' with all of them but surely you can 'understand' them.

I wouldn't agree with Hitler's reasons for invading Poland but I understand why he did!

By all means weigh in and tell us exactly why we're foolish to worry about them and our DC, but dismissing us all with a couple of lines- especially when it's clear you haven't read the whole thread- is bound to irritate everyone on here... unless that was your intention!

Wid · 18/05/2012 11:03

Thank you, BrigitBigKnickers!

dovebird · 18/05/2012 11:33

i read the first three/four pages looking for a reason why people get so uptight about this, but still couldnt see one, so i asked an honest question why do people get so concerned about it
i truely do not get it

Sleepydog · 18/05/2012 11:37

I think its quite simple really - we get 'concerned' because its our children - whether we think it will effect them in secondary school , or that they are worried about them , or we disagree with the pressure that schools may put them under.

Simple .

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 18/05/2012 11:38

Then read the others. I doubt anyone can be arsed explaining AGAIN. If you don't get it and don't want to, leave this and the other 31 pages alone, why not?

dovebird · 18/05/2012 11:41

oh deary me.

of course i can understand people care about their children.

just do get why people so so concerned.

not saying concerned at all, just so concerned

i don't think you actaually get what i'm trying to say

anyway i don't think i'm going to see your pov so i shall leave you to get on with it.
