Feeling more nervous than DS2!

He's 'borderline', particularly in Literacy. He'll be so happy if he gets a 4 (as will I!) so off he went just now with me offering my last minute bon mots ('Read carefully! Most of the answers are in the text! If it doesn't make sense, you've not read it properly' etc).

OP posts:

IndigoBell Ah, hope he got through it.

Agree with your last statement Smile

sandyballs · 14/05/2012 13:38

Can someone please tell me which test is on which day. i understand it was reading today, is that right?

Dancergirl · 14/05/2012 13:41

I know it's been asked on here before but I don't remember a definitive answer: are you legally allowed to withdraw your child from KS2 SATS?

I don't agree with them and can't wait for them to be scrapped. Dd doesn't mind doing them and doesn't seem to be under too much pressure but could I withdraw her if I wanted to?

littlelegsmum · 14/05/2012 13:47

I don't know the answer if i'm honest, but if school go ahead and give DD the support they plan to in the maths paper (after no support throughout the year), then we will not be sending DD into school for those . . Sorry, wasn't much use ;)

doormat · 14/05/2012 13:48

same here ds is doing his sats this week...wishing all children the best in them xxx

littlelegsmum · 14/05/2012 13:48

Here is a link Sandy . . you'll have to scroll down a few pages C:\Users\Mrs S\Desktop\assessment%20and%20reporting%20arrangements%20key%20stage%202.pdf

littlelegsmum · 14/05/2012 13:49

Ahhhh sorry that won't work!!

Dancergirl · 14/05/2012 13:50

What year is your dd in littlelegsmum?

Yes, that exactly one of things that bug me about SATS. Our school say there is no time in the curriculum to prepare Year 6 children for Maths/VR papers (which most of them will be sitting as there is a seconadary school consortium round here); yet they seem to find time to put in SATS preparation.

bigTillyMint · 14/05/2012 13:51

Sandy, we have a timetable -
Tuesday = long writing task / short writing task and spelling
Wednesday = Maths A / Mental Maths
Thursday = Maths B

However, DS's favourite bit of the letter says
This is mornings only - afternoons will be free for other activities and they need their PE kit in school all week

IndigoBell · 14/05/2012 13:52

Dancer - you can't legally withdraw your child.

Most children aren't stressed. Remember MN is not a representative sample :)

My boy is only stressed by SATS because of his personality (ie he has Aspergers) - none of the other kids in his class are complaining.

Sure, some schools get it wrong, and the kids get stressed. But most don't

It's just that we always hear about the bad ones here on MN......

littlelegsmum · 14/05/2012 13:53

She's in Year 6 Dancegirl (sorry can't highlight names etc)

It's ridiculous. We've had so many meetings recently to practically beg for support, and now it's only being given for SATS, then taken away again - It was also given in Mock SATS too!!

littlelegsmum · 14/05/2012 13:58

Ohhh BigTillyMint . . Our letter doesn't say that - They are working in-between knowing DD's school!!

DD got SATS homework this weekend, which wasn't done as she forgot about it . . which she often does (or maybe it's because school refused to complete the home-school book as i'd had crossed words with the SENco on Friday). Either way, it wasn't done!

Dancergirl · 14/05/2012 14:00

That would make me angry too littlelegsmum

At our school ill children are encouraged to come to school anyway, do the paper and then go home again! Madness - if my child is ill enough to be off school that's where they stay. Just another example of the child's needs coming second.

Dancergirl · 14/05/2012 14:01

So what would actually happen if I didn't send her in on test days then indigobell?

littlelegsmum · 14/05/2012 14:05

Wow, don't worry if you've got a bug, just come in pass it on and then go home again . . That is mad, Dancegirl

sandyballs · 14/05/2012 14:07

Thank you. Mine are also excited by the afternoon activities, shame its peeing down here though, think they were hoping to be outside.

sandyballs · 14/05/2012 14:09

My girls were told that the head teacher would come round to the house if anyone was off sick! If they had a chicken pox type illness that was contagious to others but they felt ok I wouldn't mind that, but if they were throwing up and really unwell I wouldn't let him in! Madness.

O2BNormal · 14/05/2012 14:11

Dancergirl We were told "alternative arrangements" would be made for them to take the test on their return to school

ripsishere · 14/05/2012 14:11

My girl is doing SATS this week. She wasn't at a British school for the KS1 lot so she's been a bit flappy about it.
Her school set great store by them and have been practicing practicing practicing. Both me and DH (teacher BTW) have told her not to worry, it is the school being examined. That seemed to help a bit but not much.

iseenodust · 14/05/2012 14:12

Ofsted are in at DS's school today & tomorrow. Bet there is some stress going on there. A bit strangely IMO DS yr3 has been told no PE this week. I was thinking maybe less noise to distract yr6 but given comments above maybe yr6 will be hogging the field. Grin

O2BNormal · 14/05/2012 14:14

Yes, iseemodust at our school years 3-5 have had their break-time postponed until after the Yr6s have finished their tests.

Floggingmolly · 14/05/2012 14:14

Kids on Rescue Remedy!!!!!! I can't believe people are really this stressed about SATS, what are you all going to be like when GCSE time rolls round, or university interviews...
Maybe I'm lucky with an extremely laid back dd, who's also predicted to do well, but honestly, most of her friends are the same.

Iamnotminterested · 14/05/2012 14:19

Floggingmolly IndigoBell's DS has Aspergers and suffers from anxiety, give them a break.

mummytime · 14/05/2012 14:19

When my eldest was in year 6, the head had a meeting with parents about the importance of SATs. He told us stories of a child sitting them in his office with a sick bucket next to them; another of a group of kids with chicken pox doing them together in someone's large kitchen.

Two months later I was in another meeting, where he mentioned having to say this stuff, but "of course he would have kept his own kids off school if they were ill". Which was pretty much my attitude.

Some schools are much better at moving people between sets than others, some also pay less attention to SATs than others. Although I have known people move even in the most rigid set ups (up as well as down).

SunflowersSmile · 14/05/2012 14:21

No break time for years 3-5 O2B? They will go stir crazy! [Mind you if it continues to piss down maybe they won't mind].
