What is it with these boys not dressing properly for the weather?

12yo won't wear a vest or a jumper with his school uniform. So just a shirt, blazer and coat in minus 6 degrees!

Special concession he'll wear a hat and gloves but no scarf.

It's the first year he's put his foot down, he used to wear warmer stuff.

Is it just mine or do they all do it?

Not just yours
DS (16) has grudgingly agreed to wear a tshirt under his shirt today.
DH was shocked when I told him he doesnt have a school jumper.
After buying multiple packs that I gave away, unworn, after he grew out of them, I stopped buying them.
He would not wear a hat if you paid him!

Christmascherry · 06/01/2026 07:36

I think it’s mainly because they are not allowed to wear coats indoors at school, and having to carry a coat around all day as well as bag of books etc.

My daughter is about to leave for the school bus in a few minutes and I’m going to try and persuade her to take a coat but I doubt she will!

olympicsrock · 06/01/2026 07:42

Are you in the Uk ? He doesn’t need a scarf. He ‘ll get hot once at school and only lose things .

BitOutOfPractice · 06/01/2026 07:44

It’s not just boys!

Christmascherry · 06/01/2026 07:45

She wore her coat! 😯

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/01/2026 07:45

Mine haven’t won’t vests since they are about 6, and insisted on wearing shorts all through primary (not allowed in comp)

mine now wears his thin cotton shirt, trousers and coat. That’s it. No jumper or hat, gloves, scarf etc. it seems to be the done thing at their age and as it’s not me getting cold, I make sensible suggestions and then let them get on with it!

Anotherdayattheforum · 06/01/2026 07:47

And girls still with exposed midriffs. 🥶

herbalteabag · 06/01/2026 07:47

My son doesn't like wearing a jumper and a coat as apparently it feels too bulky! He doesn't have to be at school until later today so we'll see if he has changed his mind considering it's -6! He always wears a hat though 🤣.

This song sums up the struggle...

DS2 (primary) had an inset yesterday. Went down the road in a t-shirt, waterproof (not insulated, fleece insert missing) and thin tracksuit pants. And crocs with socks.

Tbf my DS will wear skins under his shirt if its really cold but the white ones were in the wash after he wore them for sport. I'll order some more, that should ensure we dont get any more cold weather til hes outgrown them! 😄

Doesn’t need a scarf? It’s -4 here. Anyone walking to school would benefit from a scarf!

AphroditesSeashell · 06/01/2026 07:50

A vest? My kids would have laughed me out the room if I'd suggested they wear a vest beyond the age of about 7.

I remember being a teenager and wandering around the town with no coat on, much to my mothers despair. I think kids just don't feel the cold in the same way. I, on the other hand, am in the office with a scarf over my knees serving as a blanket, my fingerless gloves on and my desk heater blasting warm-ish air in my face ❄☃

Depends on their journey to school! Mine have just walked 10 mins to the bus stop in -6 degrees. Waiting 8 mins as the bus was late. 40 mins on a rickety, freezing bus. 5 min walk the other side to the school. They’re wearing scarves! They take it off at school, obviously (and put it in their locker) so they won’t get too hot at school.

PurpleThistle7 · 06/01/2026 07:54

There are no lockers at our secondary school so my daughter hates wearing too much and carrying it around all day. I can just about convince her to wear a jacket.

FourForksSake · 06/01/2026 07:56

DS has bought his first coat at the age of 23! He’s never worn one, and would grudgingly put on a hoodie if it snowed. Siblings would be in coats, hats, gloves, boots. I got ‘looks’ at the school gate.

TheNightingalesStarling · 06/01/2026 07:57

Our secondary school doesn't have jumpers and they don't wear vests... the building is heated!

My 12yo has just asked her sister for a pair of PE leggings... she normally just wears the shorts!

u3ername · 06/01/2026 07:57

I blame the parents who are happy to let them wear less when they are younger (they can’t handle the arguments).
Then they all grow up and peer pressure/ copying the ‘coolest’ is more important.

So yes, if your child is in primary do dress them for the weather- even if they are older than (gasp) 7.

DappledThings · 06/01/2026 08:00

I never got on with scarves. They're bulky and annoying. A coat done up all the way does the same job.

Octavia64 · 06/01/2026 08:00

They all do it.

to be fair schools are heated and nobody needs a vest.

ConnieHeart · 06/01/2026 08:00

A shirt, blazer & coat is fine fir this weather. Blazers are very warm

WindyW · 06/01/2026 08:03

Just having a row with my kid about why shorts aren’t appropriate!

Dollyfloss · 06/01/2026 08:06

The amount of men/boys wearing shorts in the freezing temperatures always baffles me too. I wonder if it’s bc they run around and get overheated?

DH has a workout routine that he does every day in our garden and he is still taking his top off for it! I think he has some kind of self-flagellation fetish 😂

I saw a man in shorts and flip flops at the supermarket at the weekend. Very strange

SellFridges · 06/01/2026 08:12

DS won’t wear trousers so he’s off to school in shorts. He’s going to whinge next year when he goes to secondary and he needs to wear trousers and a blazer.

ZenNudist · 06/01/2026 08:12

Ds (11) just gone on 40 min bus ride in blazer jumper and shirt. I made him wear a coat yesterday and he left it in school in his locker

At least 15yo is wearing a puffer.

Loads of boys off my sons bus yesterday in blazer and shirt only.
