12yo won't wear a vest or a jumper with his school uniform. So just a shirt, blazer and coat in minus 6 degrees!

Special concession he'll wear a hat and gloves but no scarf.

It's the first year he's put his foot down, he used to wear warmer stuff.

Is it just mine or do they all do it?

Are you in the Uk ? He doesn’t need a scarf. He ‘ll get hot once at school and only lose things .

My classroom was -6 yesterday. We all had jackets, scarves, hats and gloves on until after lunch time!

My two sons are late 20s. They were exactly the same. Nothing new and they are still alive and kicking!

My DD13 won’t wear a coat. It’s been down to -3 with snow here this weekend and week. She has put fluffy leggings on under trousers. Wears a shirt and jumper then has been putting an extra hoody on top instead of a coat. She likes a beanie and long scarf so has been wearing those. I picked her up the other day from our local shops where she walks after school and then has to wait around for me and she looked frozen. Her excuse isn’t to do with carrying a coat at school it’s more a sensory thing that she doesn’t like the feel of a coat. It’s a recent thing though as this time last year she wore a coat she didn’t like and was desperate for me to buy her a north face which I couldn’t afford at the time. I offered this summer to get one for when the winter came in but for the whole coat refusal.

DD16 is more sensible and can wear own clothes for sixth form and has bought a fleece lined denim jacket from a vintage sale. She usually has some kind of hoody under that too and has even gone with layering a long sleeve T-shirt under a short sleeve.

My DS12 wears shorts, because he hates the feel of school trousers, a shirt and a jumper - no coat!

Grandson still wears shorts when it's freezing! And I see lots of boys passing the house when it's raining in just their school jumpers.

I am 53 and I remember going around in shorts and barefoot at home in the frost. I did weR school uniform to school, though, including a coat.

I'm surprised by some of the comments on here.
Some kids run hot, some cold.
There is a fashion element and a carrying around stuff element in what kids will wear in the cold.
I'd trust them to know what works for them. I know it's agonising for us! But it's part of growing up and they need to do it.
There are loads of especially adult men I know that wear shorts all year round and youngsters who wear skimpy stuff/t shirts in freezing conditions.
No one's dying of hyperthermia!
Let them be!

11 year old declined a jacket. It was minus 9. Took a lot of discussion before I glared at him and he wore it....then told me in the afternoon that I was over reacting. ... Enjoy feeling cold ya wee roaster .

All these kids who don't know how to dress appropriately. For a country that fetishises school uniform as a method of teaching exactly that, it's striking.

When I was a child in the 1950s (yes, I'm ancient!) DM made us wear a vest and a liberty bodice under our blouse and jumper. There was no disobeying your mother back then....!

candyfloss89 · 12/01/2026 19:07

I think some kids don't feel the cold. I work in a school and a number of the boys of all ages wear shorts all year round.

Wincher · 12/01/2026 23:22

My boys will only wear thin coats to school as they can’t fit their thick ones in their school bags and they have to carry everything round all day. Blazers are no longer compulsory at their school but if I was them I would wear both jumper and blazer in the cold - but they refuse! Just short-sleeved shirt, thin cotton jumper and thin raincoat. Though at least they have a less than 10 min walk to school.

PurpleLovecats · 12/01/2026 23:37

Some people just don’t feel the cold. I don’t. I never wear a coat, I only own one, it’s a rain Mac. No woollen or thicker coat at all.
I’m in a t shirt at home all year round, my family will be under blankets with jumpers on and I’m wandering round moaning I’m hot!
If I’m alone in the house, I’ll open all the windows regardless of time of year. But because the others all feel the cold we compromise and I have the bedroom window and bathroom window permanently open.
I have MH issues so rarely leave the house but did last sat evening. It was -2 and very frosty/icy. I was in leggings, a long t shirt and a cardi.
