What is it with these boys not dressing properly for the weather?

12yo won't wear a vest or a jumper with his school uniform. So just a shirt, blazer and coat in minus 6 degrees!

Special concession he'll wear a hat and gloves but no scarf.

It's the first year he's put his foot down, he used to wear warmer stuff.

Is it just mine or do they all do it?

When I was this age I remember it being a combination of school rules making things difficult, we had to "carry coats in a bag" which isn't easy with all your other stuff and daft peer pressure stuff like not wanting to be the only one with a jumper under the blazer.

Wildbushlady · 06/01/2026 08:15

Our secondary school did away with coat rooms and lockers after they refurbished. The children have to lug around a ton of books in their bags, and none want to add the hassle or weight of a coat to it.

Fucking idiotic, and I bet the teachers have somewhere to hang their coats.

Fernsrus · 06/01/2026 08:21

I don’t think it’s just about carrying stuff. Something deeper is going on.

GalaxyJam · 06/01/2026 08:21

My daughters (early secondary) went today in fleece lined tights, shirt, jumper, blazer, coat, scarf, hat and gloves. They’d rather be warm than cool!

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 06/01/2026 08:21

It's all those mandatory layers of polyester being hot and sweaty, it's stifling especially when you've got to move from class to class, the heating across the building is inconsistent and your bag gets heavier as the day goes on.

Once a vest is on it can't be removed if it's too hot, and a coat is an extra burden to carry around.

bagsofbats · 06/01/2026 08:23

I wanted to make a public announcement this morning that my daughter has ample appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather conditions however she is choosing not to wear it and at 15 there's not much I can do about it.

UnusualOtter · 06/01/2026 08:24

My boy teens haven't worn vests since infant school I don't think, I wouldn't expect them to. I do wish the 15 year old would wear a winter coat though, have asked him plenty of times to go shopping for one. The 18 year old similarly refuses to go shopping for shoes even though his soles have come away from the main bit of the shoe. It's sheer laziness in their cases.

RosalieShineOnMe · 06/01/2026 08:25

Mines just gone with a long sleeve top and shirt.

No jumper, no blazer, no coat. Its minus 3.

I had to bring his jumper and blazer to school yesterday as he purposely left it in the car.

We just had an argument about it before he left. School dont make him wear it either! Hes going to freeze

kinkytoes · 06/01/2026 08:25

Sounds like I should be grateful he's wearing a coat!

Once he's at school it's fine, but he has a bus journey either end so it's all that goes with that that I worry about.

Surely you would just buy him the same shoes in the same size, as you know they fit and theow his old ones away??

Runnersandtoms · 06/01/2026 08:26

I do think the carrying stuff is a big part of it. But my teens always say they'd rather be cold than too hot. So definitely under layers wouldn't happen.

Ds 15 does a paper round, it was freezing at 6.30 this morning so he did wear gloves and scarf plus a thin coat over his blazer/jumper/shirt. But the danger is he will lose or forget said items because of not having anywhere to put them.

Often he only wears gloves (essential for biking) with his uniform when I would definitely be wearing my big coat.

I blame the parents who are happy to let them wear less when they are younger (they can’t handle the arguments).
Then they all grow up and peer pressure/ copying the ‘coolest’ is more important.

So yes, if your child is in primary do dress them for the weather- even if they are older than (gasp) 7.

That doesn't work, both my children happily wore coats, gloves, scarves, warm jumpers, decent footwear when at primary. It doesn't mean they will continue to agree to when older!

herbalteabag · 06/01/2026 08:31

At our secondary you can get a locker to put stuff in but both my children refused to use one because they didn't want to 'waste time' walking to it. So the carrying things all day was an issue. Also, they had so many things in their bags that nothing extra really fitted, no room for jumper etc in it.

Yep- always the parents' fault... 🙄

Maybe it's not that they can't handle the arguments and more that they recognise that everyone has different body temperatures and that there would be nothing worse than being togged up in coat, hat, scarf and mittens if you don't actually feel cold?

MyThreeWords · 06/01/2026 08:35

My son is still the same, aged 26.🙄

Goatymum · 06/01/2026 08:35

Mine used to wear thermal layer when really cold so just like a long-sleeved top underneath their shirt sleeved school shirt. Also a hoodie underneath blazer they took off once in school. They only wore coats in sixth form as no blazers

My daughter runs hot - takes after my husband. Can’t handle the warm weather at all and is rarely cold - she thrives in it. My son does get cold. So instead of forcing her to wear the same things my son and I prefer - I trust her to do what works for her. My only rule was that if id suggested a different item of clothing and they chose not to wear it, I didn’t want to hear any whining about being cold (or hot!)

😂 it’s not a question of not being able to “handle the arguments” it’s a question of pick your battles! They’re not going to die of hypothermia so it really doesn’t matter. My kids make their own decisions on what to wear - as long as they’re adhering to school uniform rules the rest is up to them 🤷‍♀️

What's the problem? I didn't wear warm clothes as child and I don't now. I've just walked to work in jeans and a tshirt with just a coat on. No gloves, vest, scarf! It's minus 12 here.

Fizbosshoes · 06/01/2026 08:45

We were looking for a vest last night and found one buried at the bottom of a drawer...it was age 8-9....that was probably the last time I had a hope of persuading DS to wear one (hes 16)

But he rarely complains of being cold and is generally warm. In the house, even in winter, he wanders about in tshirt shorts and bare feet - and always has since he was young - when everyone else is wearing jumpers and slippers.

DD(19) accepted dressing for the weather during the covid era, when they had to have all the doors and windows open at school. She wore as much as physically possible and was really miserable. she got chilblains that winter and used to come home from school and sit under her duvet with all her clothes on. Since then she really feels the cold and wears multiple layers more than everyone else even when it isnt particularly cold

A shirt, blazer & coat is fine fir this weather. Blazers are very warm

No they're not!

They're thin polyester nasties!

I think it is dreadful that children don't have lockers. The back problems they'll have when they're older...

My sons blazer is a thin polyester one which I dont think would be warm but other schools have wool or tweed blazers which are probably horrendous in summer but warmer in winter

thefamous5 · 06/01/2026 08:52

My 13 year old has gone to achool today in just his shirt and a hoodie. No jumper (dont have to wear it) and they dont have blazers.

He went out with his mates yesterday in shorts and a hoodie!

Agreed, carting all this stuff around with them is storing up issues for the future.
At my daughters’ school they’re given 5 mins in the morning to go to their lockers and put in anything they don’t need for the morning. After lunch they do the same. So they’re never carrying too much stuff around with them.
And like a PP said, I imagine the teachers aren’t expected to carry of their belongings around with them all day.
