What is it with these boys not dressing properly for the weather?

12yo won't wear a vest or a jumper with his school uniform. So just a shirt, blazer and coat in minus 6 degrees!

Special concession he'll wear a hat and gloves but no scarf.

It's the first year he's put his foot down, he used to wear warmer stuff.

Is it just mine or do they all do it?

Mine haven’t won’t vests since they are about 6, and insisted on wearing shorts all through primary (not allowed in comp)

mine now wears his thin cotton shirt, trousers and coat. That’s it. No jumper or hat, gloves, scarf etc. it seems to be the done thing at their age and as it’s not me getting cold, I make sensible suggestions and then let them get on with it!

Same here. Mine would be in shorts if comp allowed it

SarahAndQuack · 06/01/2026 08:58

They all do it. I have repeatedly endlessly to DD 'I don't care whether or not you need a coat; you are taking one because otherwise I feel like a bad mother!' Grin

ViciousCurrentBun · 06/01/2026 08:58

They run hotter plus who wants to carry stuff about at school.

It’s a little snowy where we are I saw men in shorts in the snow yesterday, not running for a workout just walking about. Up North though and I saw that meme on here yesterday snow and ice with a further mocked up sign saying t.shirt weather in Yorkshire, made me laugh.

GemmasLeftPyjamaLeg · 06/01/2026 09:01

Weirdly my children both wore a warm coat and hat and gloves to secondary. But the secondary had words with any child not wearing weather appropriate clothing basically pointing out that firstly it is child like to not wear a coat rather than a grown up thing to do and it raises a mild safeguarding issue that your parents are not providing weather appropriate clothing.

They all wear coats at that school. It is rare to see a child without one walking up to school. It is -3 here and snowing. School was a 25 minute walk from our house.

Mine didn't wear vests past primary, if it was cold for secondary they wore a base layer under their shirt but jumpers were compulsory uniform.

Getting my two to wear a coat to school would be a miracle, especially DD (15). She has got the bus to school this morning in a shirt and blazer. She won’t wear tights, she has knee high socks on. I bought her jumpers in year 7 because I think they look nice but she point blank refused them. She won’t wear a coat ever. She has a thin jacket but it’s more for fashion and suitable for spring, not winter.
DS (13) isn’t as bad. He won’t wear a coat to school but will wear one out and about. He’s gone today with a thin short sleeve sports t shirt and a fleece because he has a sporting event this morning. He will change into his shirt and blazer afterwards. It was about -2° when they left this morning.
It’s definitely not just yours! I think they all do it.

worrisomeasset · 06/01/2026 09:03

And yet, when it's a hot and humid 30°C summer day, you'll see loads of teenage lads dressed in toasty warm black fleeces and joggers, usually with the hood up. I don't know how they manage to avoid keeling over with heat stroke.

Kibble19 · 06/01/2026 09:07

My 4 year old is hit and miss with scarves and a hat. Especially layer in the day. If we’re leaving nursery and walking to the car park, I’m at the stage of giving it “are you sure you don’t want your jacket on?” if any other parents are nearby, so they know I’m not insane/neglectful. 🙃

I actually think this is quite reasonable! Hat and gloves and coat…would have been seen dead in any of these when I was 12 🤣🤣.

6 year old has gone to school in shorts. He has trousers in his bag but I know won’t wear them. Madness.

TeaRoseTallulah · 06/01/2026 09:17

I wouldn't want to wear a shirt, blazer and a coat! I thought you were going to say he didn't wear a a coat.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 06/01/2026 09:19

My 13 year old actually went out in shorts and a t shirt over the holidays, walking around 20 minutes. His logic - he was meeting his friends at Tag Active and putting a hoody or coat in a locker is 'too much hassle'
He won't entertain gloves or a jumper for school and is still wandering around the house in shorts and no socks when at home 🤷

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/01/2026 09:20

I've just had a flashback to being a (very poor) single mum to five (all at Primary) and a teacher coming out to the playground to very tactfully and carefully tell me that there were coats available in Lost Property if I wanted to rummage through and find some that would fit my lot.

THEY HAD COATS! We had a utility room FULL of coats of all sizes and purposes - the little buggers just wouldn't wear them!

I felt so bad for the teacher who been so careful to try not to make me feel poverty stricken. And, while I was poverty stricken, the kids didn't go without. I've always remember that, and told the kids about it when they were older. They're adults now and all messaging me to complain about how cold it is...

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 06/01/2026 09:31

DS 14 used to wear all the warm stuff when he was younger and I had no problem with making him. When he hit year 5, he chose to wear shorts to school but I could at least get him to wear a coat. Not anymore. I figure he’s old enough and daft enough to make his own choices. I offered all the warm things and he has gone in a blazer, trousers and shirt. No coat, no vest, no jumper. He has a locker, he could take them but he won’t. He won’t let me buy him a nice warm coat from anywhere (he says I am welcome to buy it but he won’t wear it, so there is no point).

I give up. Daft sod.

TokyoSushi · 06/01/2026 09:33

Fortunately the trend for boys here is a Massive Puffer Coat, DS yesterday in -4 went out with only a t-shirt on underneath it though!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 06/01/2026 09:54

He's got 3 layers on, he'll be fine. My memories of being a teenage boy in cold weather are that there are once you got to school, there were two options. It was either freezing, or they'd bumped the heating up so it was absolutely sweltering. Freezing, just keep you coat on, but if it's boiling and you've got your vest on then you're in for a bad day.

I've always preferred to be chilly than warm, so would always dress for the warmest possibility.

What would happen if appropriate clothing was compulsory as it was when I went to school (back in the dark ages)? - And the school was heated, before anyone comments!!

Pyew · 06/01/2026 15:38

Schools discourage sensible winter dressing. Nowhere to store coats and boots, and they insist on kids wearing blazers, which are the most stupid impractical clothing items ever invented. Mind, it's as well for people to get used to it at school because most pubs/clubs/restaurants/venues also have no/inadequate coat storage. Hence all the Geordies wandering around half naked on nights out.

Blades2 · 06/01/2026 18:59

lol perfectly normal behaviour at that age. Mine refused coats until around 16, she’s now smarter and loves a good warm coat

Sassylovesbooks · 06/01/2026 19:07

It's common once children start secondary school, and not exclusive to boys either!! I often see children from my son's secondary school walking to school in freezing conditions or rain, with no coat, just their blazer! My 15 year old son is one of the few who refuses to freeze his arse off on a winters morning or get wet! He went to school this morning, with his shirt, jumper, blazer and coat (obviously trousers too!) along with gloves, snood and hood up!!

My son says a lot of children don't want to have to carry their coat around, as they aren't allowed to wear them indoors in-between lessons. My son's school don't provide lockers, so students have to carry all their belongings with them.

Seawolves · 06/01/2026 19:24

It's a tale as old as time isn't it? My kids did the same in their teens, they are now in their 30s I don't remember any harm coming to them because they didn't dress as warmly as I thought they should.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 06/01/2026 19:28

Mine hasn’t worn a vest since primary school and gave up jumpers at around age 14. He’ll wear a jacket in winter though (we’re in Scotland). He says school is really warm and doesn’t need anything more.

SheSpeaks · 06/01/2026 19:30

One of mine (not a boy) went in shirt and blazer today. No coat no scarf no vest no jumper no gloves. Just as I say, shirt, and blazer.

Being fair I also went out today wearing a long sleeved top. I did have a coat with me (I don’t do gloves hats or scarves) but I was wearing it tied round my waist by the time I’d been out ten minutes. And I’m not a teenager

Scrabbler · 06/01/2026 19:32

I don’t think it’s just boys who aren’t wrapping up warm for the weather -the girls at DS’s high school are still in their ‘rolled up to bum skimming length’ skirts and bare legs 🥶

DS has Raynauds and even then won’t wear gloves 🤦🏻‍♀️

CautiousLurker2 · 06/01/2026 19:44

My DS has conceded to long trousers but happily goes to college in nothing by a t shirt. Insisted on a hoody today/yesterday. He is nearly 18…

it’s a bloke thing. Our postie wears shorts all year round too. 🥶

Holidaypumpkin · 06/01/2026 20:25

It’s not “cool” I’d imagine. Also have a teen the same!

however, pick your battles!!!! He’s got a jacket which is more than most I know.
mine wears short sleeve shirt & sometimes a jumper! Never ever wears his blazer unless in school and never wears a jacket.

out with friends he’ll wear a jacket & scarf.. absolutely no gloves 🤦🏻‍♀️. We’re in the height of winter here, won’t wear boots and only trainers so soaked daily but that’s his problem not mine.

honestly, leave him to it!

Fizbosshoes · 06/01/2026 21:45

I dropped DD and friends at the pub earlier, its pissing down, I suggested taking an umbrella "but mum I'm not taking a bag..."

5 min into car journey "oh its really raining, I should have brought an umbrella for the way home!" 😄
