My youngest DD (10) has taken a liking to jumping like an animal in the garden, drawing foxes, and wants me to buy her a mask and tail for her 11th birthday. She claims she's a "Therien" and feels like an animal. Apparently a few kids her age have gotten into it.

I really wouldn't use this analogy. Many millions of people have been killed for their religious beliefs throughout history. No one is trying to kill you or persecute you. I come across people like this in my line of work and they are (gross generalisation coming up) all ASD and many are very skilled in some way. However, others regard them as weird and avoid them.
