What the fuck are Theriens?

My youngest DD (10) has taken a liking to jumping like an animal in the garden, drawing foxes, and wants me to buy her a mask and tail for her 11th birthday. She claims she's a "Therien" and feels like an animal. Apparently a few kids her age have gotten into it.

Okay then

Tmpnmc86 · 25/07/2024 21:45

Well that was quite an escalation!

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 25/07/2024 21:49

I woukd make her eat her food off a bowl on the floor and shit in a litter tray swe how much she wants to be an animal then. Brutal but needs nipping in the bud. Honestly what is the world coming to?

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 25/07/2024 21:51

Yappucino · 24/07/2024 14:48

UPDATE!
I talked to her, she said she knows that she's a human and still considers herself one, but being a Therian makes her happy and she only wants to do animal stuff when she's playing. Still find it extremely weird, but relieved to know it's only for fun and kids will be kids.

Sorry just read this - that must be a relief for you x

MamaGarl85 · 25/07/2024 21:57

Stop the world, I want to get off 😭

Tosstyhat · 25/07/2024 22:03

Call it what you like but if my child came to me and said they were an animal in a human's body I'd be saying "ok dear" and praying it passes. I definitely wouldn't be actively supporting them.

If they get to 40 and decide they really, genuinely believe they're an animal then I'll believe it.

Seems to me like these kids are just desperate to be different.

It'd be interesting to know how many kids felt this way before the internet was a thing. I'm sure the numbers would be much lower.

sagalooshoe · 25/07/2024 22:04

Mountain Wolf eh.

Funny how it's never a shrimp or a slug.

A bit like ghosts all being Victorian.

WhereDoWeGoFromHereHmmm · 25/07/2024 22:09

I've seen quite a few young teens around over the past few months with masks/tails and on all fours. They look daft, I assumed it was just playful/experimental.

I assume she has plenty of time for play as it sounds as though she is not overly exposed to grown up stuff, but does she do other playful things like drama classes, going to the park? And physical things like gymnastics or acro where she gets to move her body? It is obviously fulfilling a need of some sort.

petermaddog · 25/07/2024 22:11

sounds like she has her head straight

I’m afraid I would be cutting off access to YouTube, telling her bluntly that she isn’t an animal and then keeping her extraordinarily busy with other things until she moves on.

but someone will be along in a minute to tell me I’m an intolerant bigot so what do I know 👀

Humans are animals.

This! Are there any therians who think they're dung beetles, centipedes, tardigrades, ants, electric eels or manatees?

Dressinggowntime · 25/07/2024 22:20

You need to be concerned about this. Just been through it with my ten year old. There’s a lot of chat online on various platforms ( TikTok, Capcut, even Roblox ) and a lot of the people making videos are older than the tweens that are interested in it. The language is quite worrying. Lots of ‘your parents won’t understand, were you’re real family’ type stuff. It’s cult like. Pressure to buy masks etc and online bullying. You’re either in/ out. Don’t underestimate it. My dd didn’t have TikTok but she’d been talking to people in Roblox games. I’ve stopped all her access now.

Hi! Friendly therian talking here! Exclusing this to some people known as fake therians (you can guess from the name) fake being a therian, therianthropy is not a phase and can not be 'grown out of'. We don't choose it and we can't get rid of it, even if you wanted to. Being a therian isn't about acting like an animal as play, though most do quadrobics as a fun activity that makes them feel more animal-like.Therianthropy is when you identify as one, as many therians experience memories from their past lives as animals. On every level except physical, therians identify as their thereotypes and can relate to the animalistic behaviour of them. We do quadrobics on all fours to feel morre connected to our thereotypes, with mine being Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf, Scottish Fold, Cross Fox and Dragon. (Yes, you can have multiple thereotypes.) Being a therian isn't created by the internet, you are born with therianthropy, but seeing videos on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok might encourage you you're not alone in how you're feeling, that there are others just like you, and you don't feel so scared anymore. Therianthropy is also NOT from any TV shows, it is REAL LIFE, not just some thing we made up. It is us. We are it. Just like you could be autistic (which I am) or dyslexic, you are born with it and it's not inspired by anything other than our inner souls. But one thing I ask you, if your child comes out to you saying they're a therian or anything that is considered 'weird' by some of the community-whether they're a furry or quadrobist or in the LGBTQ+ community (which I myself am), please, please, please support them. It means so much to them if you support them, that they don't have to hide anything from you, that they feel safe, that they can be themselves and be free around you instead of trapped by those unspoken rules that make up 'the norm', and even if you try to beat it out of them, it's not going to work. Thanks for reading, and please no hate! 😺

No. Honestly just no.

AliceMcK · 25/07/2024 22:24

My 10yo dd wanted the whole masks, fur & tail things, I didn’t ask as I knew it would have been something she’d watched on YouTube. I said fine what you want is x amount your paying, she changed her mind after that. I got her some ears for her to play with but she’s not bothered with them.

we talk in general about so much stuff on the internet being fake, stupid and down right ridiculous especially the who I identify as x, y & Z, fads, pressure on young people. She gets that she is who she is and at this point agrees people can’t be or really identify as animals and she knows most stuff she watches isn’t really real.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 25/07/2024 22:24

Id be concerned and I definitely wouldnt buy her anything that would encourage it or call her by any of the names or pronouns she decides are relavant. Big Nope.

@Yappucino kids will be kids......... until they encounter someone like Wysteria who has commented on this post. At best its nonsense. At worst its dangerous and seriously abusive. If I were you I would do all you can to actively encourage your child to find new interests, new hobbies and I for sure wouldnt allow her to watch anything on this them on you tube!

@Wysteria123 so you’re a wolf/cat/fox/dragon?

and a Scottish fold cat in particular! How did you realise you were a Scottish fold over…let’s say a bog standard tabby ?

AShortName · 25/07/2024 22:35

I remember before the internet when we played out together pretending to be animals. We were about 8/9 and young (not like the have to be mini adults today sometimes). It was just imaginative, creative, childish play. I can’t imagine anyone ever suggest we actually believed. We were children and grew out f that sort of playing.

😂😂

Apparently being Therian precludes you from using paragraphs as well. Although I suppose wolves have little need of them.

AShortName · 25/07/2024 22:38

And we used to give ourselves names. Creative made up names. But it was just play. Nowadays adults do the same, but take themselves seriously.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 25/07/2024 22:39

I do wonder why these people when they pretend to feel spiritually in tune with something, it’s always an animal like a wolf, dragon or cat. It’s never a slug, toad, rat or dung beetle. Where all the spiritual dung beetles at??? 😂
