What the fuck are Theriens?

My youngest DD (10) has taken a liking to jumping like an animal in the garden, drawing foxes, and wants me to buy her a mask and tail for her 11th birthday. She claims she's a "Therien" and feels like an animal. Apparently a few kids her age have gotten into it.

@Yappucino sorry no advice other than I find the whole thing ridiculous ☹️ sounds like your daughter has sense though and you’re taking the right approach.

LOVE your username.

scalt · 26/07/2024 06:12

I can see how children would get sucked into this. Related to this, I've heard people in their forties saying "if somebody had told me I could change sex when I was a child or teenager, I would have totally believed them".

The "we are your real family" rhetoric is especially worrying, as dangerous as "no need to tell anybody, let's keep it a secret".

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 06:13

@YellowAsteroid Yep, being a therian doesn't affect your career or anything, just your identity.

Delphinium20 · 26/07/2024 06:13

At first I thought, oh, Wisteria's had her some magic mushrooms, but then I remembered way back to the 90s and am pretty sure typing and tripping don't mix, but don't quote me on that cause not only am I old, but this thread sure made me feel it.

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 06:15

sigh

Because they are all …….as a box of frogs?

A box of golden dart frogs??

YellowAsteroid · 26/07/2024 06:19

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 06:15

sigh

You’re hardly in a position to comment so rudely.

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 06:21

@YellowAsteroid And you are in a position to comment rudely?

missb10 · 26/07/2024 06:21

It's not just today's children who have these fantasies. although with social media etc it's more of a thing. I used to wish I was a bird, horse or rabbit and even studied them so that I would know how to behave if I was lucky enough to become one! It's just a form of escapism. Eventually I realised that I was not going to turn into a rabbit and became happy in my human self. These kids need reassuring, be themselves and help them grow in confidence and they will be ok.

Spudthespanner · 26/07/2024 06:22

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 06:10

@YellowAsteroid One of my friends is a golden dart frog and deer therian, another I know is a fly therian, the mammals are just more common ones.

This is literally gibberish

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/07/2024 06:22

In answer to your question about reincarnation @Wysteria123. Yes, I do believe. But that is as far as our beliefs converge. The rest to me is a foreign as believing the Earth is flat.

DrJump · 26/07/2024 06:23

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 03:51

@DrJump That's only when we're in the stateof shifting, which has to be triggered by feeling, tasting, doing, hearing or seeing something that reminds us of our past lives such as grass, climbing, swimming, seeing your thereotype (most of the time hopefully in its natural habitat).

Regularly losing your connection to reality is worrying. It isn't something to encourage in children.

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 06:27

Okay I have a genuine question here. Why do y'all hate therians so much? We're just being ourselves and making the most out of our short-long lives. We are animals you just can't see it. We are standing for our identity. Therian haters are going too far. We don't need therapy and we're not mentally ill, but we WILL need therapy if you keep on hating on us. People have /oofed/ themselves over hate. It's not doing anything except making us feel unsafe and unwelcome being who we are. Just like you indentify as a human, we identify as animals. Simple as that. An animal in a human's body.

FFSWherearemyglasses · 26/07/2024 06:27

OP, keep on keeping it real for your daughter, she’ll come out of the other side and you’ll have a funny (or furry) tale (or tail🥴😆…. Sorry , I’m making myself laugh😆 ) to embarrass her with at her hen do.

They say every day is a school day and that’s what this thread has been for me!!🤯 WTAF!! I have never heard of Therians or Furries or Christ knows what else has been mentioned.

Some of the women on here make me howl (see what I did there… 🐺💁🏼‍♀️) Thanks for giving me some proper LOL moments at this hour of the day.

Perhaps our resident friendly Wolf/Cat/ Dragon should do an AMA as OPs thread has been sort of hijacked and has probably not given her much comfort tbh🥴

marshmallowboy · 26/07/2024 06:28

Of course they have jobs. @Wysteria123 is out there right now hunting down food for her pack, and eating kitty kibble ( does that count) and Ah fuck I can't be arsed. If you are employed I think maybe you need to take a break, a bex and have a long lie down. You poor old soul. Well not that old - only since the 1960's.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 26/07/2024 06:28

Well, you learn something new every day.
It all sounds like a new way to be "special" snd seek attention.

OP I hope it is a passing phase for your daughter. I would keep her off YouTube for a while.

Monty Python had it exactly right, they were ahead of their time.

"We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother... sister, sorry."
"What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies, when he can't have babies?"
"It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression."
"It's symbolic of his struggle against reality."

SpanielintheWorks · 26/07/2024 06:32

Absolutely, DrJump. I've unfortunately seen a member of my family have a psychotic break. Awful.

And what's with the silly 'hating on' terminology? Disagreeing that someone is a poodle or whatever is really not hate. Pity, possibly.

This though made me laugh: they’re never a Woodhouse. Barbara Woodhouse would never have stood for it.

knitnerd90 · 26/07/2024 06:34

I don't hate therians; I merely think you're making unsupported claims about reality. Other people may hate therians, but disagreement and hate are not interchangeable.

Just because people claim to have memories of past lives does not mean they do. People make all sorts of claims, not just about animal selves. They may even believe them. But false memories are a real thing. The fact that someone thinks they remember being a frog does not mean they actually were one in a past life. It's unverifiable.

Also, please learn the difference between a hypothesis and a theory. A theory means that it has substantial evidence backing it.

We don't identify as human, we observably are human, as are you. It's not hate to think that having some internal sense of self that is so wildly at odds with objective reality is a cause for concern. This is not "being yourself", it's trying to be something else because you can't accept yourself as the human you are for some reason.

marshmallowboy · 26/07/2024 06:37

"When everyone is super. Noone will be" The Incredibles.
I think people are just running out of ideas to make themselves "special". It's very sad, we've got men pretending to be women and adults pretending to be animals . Something has gone seriously wrong. I always say a short stint volunteering in a famine-stricken or war-torn country might cure this crap but apparently that makes me right wing and I've voted left all my life.

Grandmasswagbag · 26/07/2024 06:09

I think the fact that teens and older are wanting to play as animals is a devastating symptom of the fact that there are whole generations of people growing up who haven't played as children. A normal childhood involves pretending you are all manners of magical, mythical creatures and animals over many years and just playing, exploring, role play. Most people have outgrown it by the time they're about 12 ! It suggests to me ita a much needed stage that people are missing out on.

Thats a very good take on it.

Mountain Wolf eh.

Funny how it's never a shrimp or a slug.

A bit like ghosts all being Victorian.

😆

ChristmasFluff · 26/07/2024 06:39

This is really interesting!

I have always been aware of a dragon with a fish tail that is coiled within me. In my 40s I found this is actually a thing in Chinese mythology (it's a carp tail), but throughout my life I have tapped into its energy whenever I've felt afraid, and I am aware that my huge inner strength comes from my dragon.

In latter years I've tapped into it whenever I need to kick ass (metaphorically) and be fierce. It helps me do the right thing, not the easy thing.

It is both part of me, but also its own thing, so I'm not sure I 'identify' as it, but I certainly appreciate it, and there are times when I am exercising and 'in the zone' when I feel it uncoil and I fully 'embody' it.

Wysteria123 · 26/07/2024 06:41

No, we are animals, just not physically. It's correct we don't identify as humans and we know we are human. @marshmallowboy We're not trying to make ourselves special. I know someone who hates therians but is one. You think we CHOSE to be therians? No.
