There is a new school being established and governors need to decide on the uniform.

What would you go for?

What's your favourite colour uniform combination for primary school?
Rummikub · 27/01/2024 15:32

costly uniform. Seems unnecessarily so.

Sgtmajormummy · 27/01/2024 15:58

For practicality I’d say GREY POLO SHIRTS every time. They can go in a light or a dark wash, don’t show stains and don’t have the white gradient issue.
A school hoodie and/or baseball jacket are a nice modern touch.
I wore navy my whole time at school. Boring but it suits everybody. Maybe yellow/silver tie.

My kids went to Italian schools and the smocks are a good practical idea. Pre-school are any pastel colour and so sweet. Primary are black with a white collar and the kids generally wear a T-shirt underneath and sweatpants or shorts in summer.

Zola1 · 27/01/2024 15:59

My daughters primary wore purple jumpers and cardigans and summer dresses. Trying to get a spare at asda or trying to get hold of summer dresses was awful.
I think light blue polo with navy jumper is best

2024andsobegins · 27/01/2024 16:24

Royal blue with white or navy polo shirts and navy bottoms

I don't think so, they are cotton so over shorts and a vest should be fine.

Also compared to the grey school trousers kids in the UK have to wear they would be cooler.

Unfortunately they’re usually 65/35% polyester/cotton but after about May the school announces that the kids can leave them on their hooks until needed or not wear them in at all.

I would make all primary uniforms simple for every single school nothing logo'ed

  1. grey trousers, skirt, pinafore or shorts for every single primary
  2. polo shirt any readily available colour:- school choice
  3. school sweatshirt or hoodie any readily available colour:- school choice
  4. waterproof sensible shoes or trainers boots in winter not logo'ed any colour
  5. warm waterproof coat so can play out in all weathers any colour at all but no logoes or brands or football
  6. PE skirt inside black PE shorts and crew neck t shirt any colour at all for outdoor PE black or grey plain joggers pair of trainers hoody or school sweatshirt can be worn if cold no branding
  7. school bag anything that holds all that is necessary
if really hot in summer just the polo shirt and PE shorts polo shirts are available easily in white, pale blue, royal blue, navy, yellow, red and green sweatshirts are easily available in royal blue, navy, teal, purple, bottle green, red and maroon, ( primary will not have grey or black) that is 56 possible combinations so no need for logoes or ties etc ( though you might not want a few combinations) items 4,5 and 7 are child / parental choice just fit for purpose so they can wear outside school this makes it affordable as the coat and traienrs can be worn at weekends too, there is also the assumption nothing is worth more than £50 any branding must be very tiny or non existent

What a PITA! I wonder if any parents have tried to challenge it with the affordable uniform rules? Reception and year 1 would need at least three jumpers and year 2 and up at least two. I only bought age 4, 6, 8 and 10, not every year.

I think things that go in the wash together are useful. For this reason, and general practicality, I think white polos (or anything white) is unsuitable for primary. It's wasteful as they have to be chucked out more than other colours and also wasteful as you have to do a white wash or watch them get ruined over time.

I think that a light blue polo with a royal blue or navy blue jumper and some grey trousers/short trousers/skirt is practical. You can shove the whole lot in the wash together and it looks nice. Any item that isn't tumble dryer proof is also crap IMO. Kids clothing needs to be turned around quickly.

I do think logo jumpers are good, especially when kids are on trips etc. I definitely think they should be the main offering and that most people can afford them. However, if people can't afford them, then plain jumpers would be fine for everyday wear and logo ones should be lent for school trips. Or else kids in hi viz stuff with school info on.

Goodness!

When mine were in primary, all the stuff got reused for sibling and then for friends.

I agree. A single parent one child family may only have enough for a clothes wash a week, it's good to be able to put everything in together. Even secondary school shirts I think should be light blue, not white.

I agree too. I was that single parent family with a couple of white secondary shirts to wash and I bought white tea towels in the end just to fill the machine with to make the wash worthwhile.

There a school in Sheffield that wears polo shirts, sweatshirts and joggers in any combo of about 6 colours.

cosypompoms · 28/01/2024 21:09

I love the green. I imagine the light blue in the first one will be covered in white board pen very soon.

That would really annoy me! Dd wore the same jumper and skirts from reception to the end of y2.

My older dc had bottle green, it was good but did fade quickly whereas the royal blue my dc have now hasn’t faded at all. Could be down to the manufacturer of course.

brightpompoms · 12/04/2024 14:07

So anyway, the school decided on dark green (bottle green) polo shirts, dark green jumper/cardi and black or grey bottoms/dress.

It can all go in the same wash and white board pen doesn't show on it.

Logo is being decided now but parents can buy unbranded items if they want or mix and match

RaraRachael · 12/04/2024 14:45

Definitely navy. Round here we have navy, maroon and pale blue and green. Hate the other options so glad mine went to the navy school.

I remember laughing at my cousin who had to wear a brown uniform.

whiteboardking · 16/04/2024 21:48

PuttingDownRoots · 24/01/2024 22:38

I have seen a school that ket them wear whatever colour jumpers and polo's they liked. Just had to be plain coloured.

One near near me says one of 4 colours - available with logo or from Asda etc Grey bottom.
After 11 years I was sick of the sight of our combination.
Red is vibrant

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 16/04/2024 21:53

Does there have to be a uniform at all? Just a simple dress code of clothes that are suitable for physical activity, play, messy projects, etc and trainers / other enclosed shoes.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 16/04/2024 22:22

Navy. Or none.
