There is a new school being established and governors need to decide on the uniform.

What would you go for?

Ah brilliant! Mine went to HH and I loved the uniform. Unisex and so practical.

If you have any sway @cosypompoms encourage the school to adopt something they can wear for sports too. Saves time changing and money.

I remember seeing the old head master of that school on TV years ago and he said his wife said that grey uniforms make "Grey minds, grey boys" or similar. 😀

Pourmeanotherwine · 24/01/2024 22:44

I'd vote for not having a uniform, but I guess that's not an option, Seems a shame to be dressing 4 year olds in dull grey, why do we do this?

SalmonWellington · 24/01/2024 22:46

Ideally, no uniform at all. Daft idea.

Failing that, polo shirts in a colour always available at supermarkets and ideally not white. Grey or black bottoms, with choice of leggings, skirts, shorts and jogging bottoms.

Trainers for shoes. Black if they have to be a colour.

No brands, no ties, no blazers, no ridiculous rules.

CatchHimDerry · 24/01/2024 22:47

That HH uniform is very Insta-worthy / on-trend right now

Wonderwoman333 · 24/01/2024 22:47

What about being a no uniform school? Kids don't need uniforms, I find it so depressing.

Maroon sweatshirt
Yellow polo
Grey trousers /skirt

Ha was gonna say the same. Ours is yellow and blue but occasionally I've shoved maroon on in an emergency and it's gorgeous. Dark yellow tho, "gold" at marks and Spencers.

mybrainisfull · 24/01/2024 22:51

I loved DD primary uniform.
Black trousers/school tartan kilt
red school polo shirt
Black sweatshirt.
Red striped summer dress.
White polo and black shorts for PE. Judo kit.
School ran it's own secondhand uniform shop for the branded stuff, so items were as cheap as supermarkets. Even the kilts and judo kit. You just gave it back to the school when DC grew out of it.
Black sweatshirts tended to wear out though.

PeanutButterCrumpets · 24/01/2024 22:53

Navy jumper, white polo and grey on the bottom looks great. DD wears grey tights and a grey pleated skirt, looks great

Nellieinthebarn · 24/01/2024 23:01

Nothing outlandish that is hard to get in normal shops. Not red, green or yellow, there are some colourings that these just don't suit. No embroidered anything, offer sew on badges. Everything washable and able to be tumble dried. And nothing that you can only get in the official uniform shop, they are just too expensive. Everyone wears trousers as that is inclusive of everyone.

PrudeyTwoShoes · 25/01/2024 05:40

Please don't do this, or at least not for anyone outside KS1. You'd be surprised how smelly Year 5/6 pupils can be (both boys and girls) and wouldn't recommend them doing PE and having to stay in their sweaty clothes for the remainder of the day. The teachers wouldn't thank you. Plus, it doesn't promote good hygiene/self care. We, as adults, wouldn't go to the gym without getting changed (for that reason, precisely) would we?

A better solution, which my DC's school do for the younger ones, is to allow them to wear their PE kit all day.

SalmonWellington · 25/01/2024 07:38

Yes to PE kit all day. Excellent idea.

Winterstormm · 25/01/2024 07:47

White polo top and grey or black skirts/trousers/pinafore. Jumper is one colour eg red, blue, green. Gingham summer dresses. This means that everything can be easily bought in supermarkets.

User373433 · 25/01/2024 07:49

Please please consider joggers everyday instead of just PE days. Some schools did this after COVID, and I think it is so forward thinking. All the alleged (won't debate that right now) benefits of uniform claimed still happen if they are in joggers/polo/sweatshirt but they are more comfortable than tailored trousers or pinafores/skirts and tights. Most adults don't wear formal office wear anymore, so I personally think it is cruel to have children wear it. My son has a shirt and tie and blazer at 4 years old, it's ridiculous. I want him comfortable and ready to learn, and not to mention, be able to dress himself independently, not looking like he off for a day at the office in the 70's.

Additionally, his burgundy jumpers are impossible to find in supermarkets, I have to order them online and stock is always hard to find in the summer holidays. His dark grey joggers for PE are also near impossible to find in supermarkets, that colour always has logos on. But every single uniform section in supermarkets (including Aldi/Lidl) had black joggers available much more easily and cheaper, so go with black for those.

GaroTheMushroom · 25/01/2024 07:49

Ours is blue which I don’t like I find it boring! I like yellow or Green.

Neolara · 25/01/2024 07:50

No uniform.

spottydinosaur · 25/01/2024 07:59

My 2 pence is not yellow / gold polo! They fade terribly and looks very obviously who has a newer one! Can't really pass them on.

White at least can be bleached!

DS is in green sweat for nursery and I'm not a fan as it shows up every stain and they don't come out. He got a stain during his first settling in 40 minute session which is still there!

shreknjumps · 25/01/2024 08:01

"But my eldest only did reception in that school so I bought a whole uniform in reception and another whole uniform in year 1. So expensive."

Surely everyone buys new uniform at this age and they grow so fast. Add in the choice to move schools and, well, of course you'd need a new uniform?!

sashh · 25/01/2024 08:10

I'd go for the Italian school smock.

The kids can wear whatever they want underneath, the smock is their uniform but also the smock is what gets paint / glue / glitter on it not the child's clothes.

Light blue dark blue combos I like best. Blue jumpers, white polos, black trousers and skirts OK. Hate grey. Love gingham dresses.

Definitely no formal shirts, ties, blazers, long pleated tartan skirts, stupid hats etc. Private school kids have the worst uniforms by far!

BrutusMcDogface · 25/01/2024 08:20

White should be outlawed for young children. Supermarket ranges now include blue and yellow polo shirts.

Schoolrunmumbun · 25/01/2024 08:23

PuttingDownRoots · 24/01/2024 22:01

Royal blue fades the least for jumpers/cardigans.

Polo shirts... my favourite is pale blue. Easily available and don't go grey.

Grey trousers/shorts/skirts most easily available.

Grey or black socks. Discourage white ones!

I agree with this. White socks and polo shirts stain too easily and go greyish in the wash. Also it's a pain doing a separate white wash.

I would choose:
Light blue polo shirt
Navy cardigan or jumper
Grey trousers, skirt, dress
Navy or grey socks
Black shoes.

Our school has the above except we have annoying white shirts and socks.

worcesterpear · 25/01/2024 08:26

I think navy sweatshirts, and joggers/skirts/dresses/shorts with red polo shirts would be good. Or navy polos/red sweatshirts but navvy polos are more difficult to find in shops.
The other option would be white polos with an unusual colour sweatshirt, like bright teal.

SoupDragon · 25/01/2024 08:28

Whatever is readily available from the local supermarkets.

NannyR · 25/01/2024 08:42

I used to work near a school in Islington that had the nicest primary uniform I've seen - there were about six bright colour options for polos and sweatshirts and children could wear any combination with their own choice of bottoms.
