There is a new school being established and governors need to decide on the uniform.

What would you go for?

I agree that a navy jumper with white polo is a good option as they are colours that can be found in all high street shops and supermarkets. I like grey trousers/skirts but often find there's such a range it shades it can look a bit 'messy'. We ask for 'charcoal' specifically but even then there's a few varying shades, which wouldn't happen with black.

There are loads of different shades of black!

I saw this school on TV and thought the uniform was nice so I'll say grey and maroon. Obviously for a primary school the tie/kilt/blazer wouldn't be necessary

Edited

I don't understand why it's necessary for secondary kids, either!

Wincher · 24/01/2024 22:26

Our primary has navy sweatshirt/light blue polos/grey trousers which is super simple to find anywhere and practical. I’m so bored of it now though after ten years of having children at the school. I look fondly at a local school with bright/teal green jumpers. Or red would be nice.

Nor do i

Rummikub · 24/01/2024 22:26

Grey or black. Anything that’s easy to buy in Asda.
I was furious when my local primary opted to have a kilt for girls. Boys could wear generic black trousers. Inequality for girls starting early.

definitely no unnecessary logos.

drspouse · 24/01/2024 22:27

Come the revolution, any person that suggests white polos will be first against the wall.
My DD is in yellow team at school and they wear yellow t-shirts on PE day - it is no better for stains.
Matalan are very reasonably priced and they sell red, yellow, white, sky blue and royal blue. I would go for royal blue.

I think grey is so institutional looking so I'd go for black trousers. My DD also wears joggers or leggings as her daily wear and they are a lot more practical.

Shinyandnew1 · 24/01/2024 22:28

Maroon jumpers and grey trousers/dresses.

CatchHimDerry · 24/01/2024 22:28

Our local primary as kids used to wear yellow. The girls had white / lemon gingham dresses in summer, boys were grey shorts yellow / lemon tees. The jumpers were more a brighter yellow. They looked so lovely such a happy colour! I imagine it’s not one you see very often in supermarkets and suchlike though for the unbranded options

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/01/2024 22:29

dark green for the main colour.

DC school had red and it suited nearly no-one!

bluesky45 · 24/01/2024 22:30

My kids school has 1 colour for EYFS and a totally different colour for ks1 and 2. I understand why they do it, most DC go to the nursery too so they have the same for 2 years and it's supposed to mark them out as "little ones" so the older ones look after them on the playground. It works. But my eldest only did reception in that school so I bought a whole uniform in reception and another whole uniform in year 1. So expensive.
I also don't like bright colours like red, royal blue etc. The white board pen shows up ridiculously and won't wash out. I work in a school with navy uniform and the white board pen doesn't show up as much.

FunnysInLaJardin · 24/01/2024 22:31

and DC secondary have black trousers for both sexes, which is great, pale blue shirts and dark blazers with silver piping. Looks very smart

JobMatch3000 · 24/01/2024 22:32

Please not black. One of the local PS and two High Schools specify black trousers and jumpers and it just looks so funereal.
As PP, let PS aged children have some colour in their life.

Lamelie · 24/01/2024 22:33

Not maroon. It’s really draining.
Gold/ suits most skin types but it’s not easily cheaply available. Navy or royal blue close second.
No logos 🙏

My dds had yellow gingham dresses. They did look nice and sunny. Sainsburys sold them. I think they were £3.50 each but that was about 10 years ago as they are teenagers now.

HalloumiGeller · 24/01/2024 22:36

I prefer navy or dark green (my primary aged son wears navy jumper and blue polo) 🙂

Bigoldmachine · 24/01/2024 22:37

Royal blue for jumpers or cardigans is very smart.

blue gingham summer dresses

grey trousers / shorts / pinafores / skirts, tights.

my kids school allows grey OR navy blue for all of the above… either one looks ok on its own but en masse it just looks a bit of a mess (I realise this is a very trivial thing to take issue with, I only rant about it in my own head I promise). I would choose grey over navy because all school shoes are black and I prefer the look of grey with black than navy with black.

where possible make it ok to buy plain versions. Eg PE kit - plain navy joggers and royal blue t shirt would be my preference. And plain navy hoodie.

I agree it is easy to see the appeal of the brighter colours but they do have their drawbacks (wouldn’t yellow jumpers look really dirty straight away?!)

One of my dds has red hair so red wouldn't have suited her. She had grey jumper at primary.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/01/2024 22:38

I have seen a school that ket them wear whatever colour jumpers and polo's they liked. Just had to be plain coloured.

modgepodge · 24/01/2024 22:38

To those mentioning availability, don’t supermarkets sell the colours worn by schools locally? I worked in a school once where the girls wore pink summer dresses (with maroon jumpers) and no one had an issue getting them as the local Tesco, Sainsbury’s etc all stocked them as they knew they’d sell. I’ve never seen pink dresses on sale in any other area as it is somewhat unusual!

I really dislike red. Purple round here tends to be the less affluent schools for some reason. I like navy personally, or maroon. Green is ok but not with yellow polos!

tiggergoesbounce · 24/01/2024 22:39

Navy jumpers, blazers, hats.
Blue shirts
Dark blue tie
Grey shorts and socks
Black shoes

PE. Keep the polo shirts blue and either navy or black training joggers or shorts.

Ah brilliant! Mine went to HH and I loved the uniform. Unisex and so practical.

If you have any sway @cosypompoms encourage the school to adopt something they can wear for sports too. Saves time changing and money.

‘The Rees-Moggs’ school uniform? Cravats are modern’

A back-to-school photo posted by Jacob Rees-Mogg has sparked a debate about modern school uniforms, says Richard Townend

mobogogi · 24/01/2024 22:40

Loved my kids red jumpers. Dark green is also lovely. Just make sure the trousers/skirts/pinafores can be bought at any shop along with plain polo shirts. I think logos on the jumpers is fine though

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 24/01/2024 22:40

Just stick with something easy to find in supermarkets and cheap. No requirements for specific brands or logos.

This is DDs primary uniform policy and it is easy, comfortable, cheap and readily available.

We expect that all the children at xxxxxxx Primary School will wear our school colours every day for school. This means:-
• Royal blue sweatshirt / cardigan with or without the school logo
• White polo shirts, t-shirts, shirts or blouses
• Grey or black trousers or tracksuit bottoms
• Other clothes without school logos, patterns or slogans in the school colours – grey, black, white or royal blue
• Checked “school” summer dresses

Please do not send your child to school in the following:-
• Jeans
• T-shirts with slogans, patterns or logos
• Football shirts
• Patterned/flowery dresses

Each child needs a PE kit - shorts, T-shirt and plimsolls. The children have swimming lessons in Key Stage 2 and will need a swimming costume and towel. We offer a wide range of sporting activities and the children will need plimsolls or trainers to change into.

Jewellery Items
• Stud earrings can be worn, no hoops or dangle earrings please
• Watches can be worn
• Religious bracelets / necklaces can be worn discretely
Please make sure that your children come to school in appropriate footwear and outdoor wear so that they are able to move safely around school and play out in comfort and warmth.

CatchHimDerry · 24/01/2024 22:41

@Sanguinello ah did they! How lovely. I think I vaguely remember seeing them
in some supermarkets too now

I remember ours fondly. I didn’t go there as we moved and I was entering “middle school and this was the “lower school”, up to year 4. I had this horrible itchy bright red V neck jumper that did nobody any favours, stripy tie. I was jealous of their cute yellow attire, my fave colour

DS1 is very fair, almost red haired when a child and the red jumper looked awful!
