There is a new school being established and governors need to decide on the uniform.

What would you go for?

Please not black. One of the local PS and two High Schools specify black trousers and jumpers and it just looks so funereal.
As PP, let PS aged children have some colour in their life.

I have to agree with no black.

I love navy but o actually found it harder to buy but that was years before online shopping.

Red looks lovely - but fucking hell it fades and shows whiteboard pen like nothing else.

Bottle green, navy, maroon for jumpers - no obscure colours because you want it to be available at the range of local supermarkets (otherwise you end up with an entire class of Asda or wherever jumpers and about half of them not named). Make it as cheap and easily accessible as possible at the moment - so no logo nonsense or as little possible in that way.

ItsAStupidQuestion · 25/01/2024 18:53

Definitely NOT emerald green!! It's such a pain to get as none of the supermarkets sell it 🙄

Already I do love the actual colour 🙈

I meant "although, I do actually love the colour" 🙄

My favourite primary uniform had a pastel green polo and a navy jumper.

Although I did also love the navy polo's that DC primary brought in with a v v sensible new head teacher.

To those mentioning availability, don’t supermarkets sell the colours worn by schools locally? I worked in a school once where the girls wore pink summer dresses (with maroon jumpers) and no one had an issue getting them as the local Tesco, Sainsbury’s etc all stocked them as they knew they’d sell. I’ve never seen pink dresses on sale in any other area as it is somewhat unusual!

I really dislike red. Purple round here tends to be the less affluent schools for some reason. I like navy personally, or maroon. Green is ok but not with yellow polos!

What would you put with green jumpers? I also don't like yellow with them, and another localish school has green with white T-shirts so beat to avoid that.

I hate white polo shirts as they never look white. My sons school is bottle green and they can wear bottle green or white polo shirts, most wear the green as they can wear them multiple days without looking dirty! Our school also does not enforce school branding, which is great as its much more affordable. I like bottle green and navy, I don't like red.

My eldest daughter had pink school uniform for the girls with dark navy cardigans in primary school. All her friends who weren’t at her school were desperate to wear pink like her. Her little sister joined another school (as we moved when the eldest went to secondary) that wasn’t pink which was most disappointing for her. It was a lovely blue but in her eyes this usual combo didn’t come close to her older sister’s pink.

From a marketing point of view the pink is unusual so stands out and captures attention. Many strangers when we were out and about commented on how lovely the pink and navy combination looks as it isn’t a colour many schools go for so it stands out. I usually see pink uniform in the sales as they don’t sell out as quickly as other colours.

If I could choose I would say any colour plain sweatshirt and polo shirt with black or grey trousers/skirts/shorts.
I'm not fussed about kids looking like they all belong in one place and the colour options would be fun and easy to get from any supermarket. It always annoyed me when they didn't have the one colour I needed and the gingham dresses are nice in any colour.

pastapestoparmesan · 25/01/2024 19:24

I worked in a school once that had a choice of 12 different coloured jumpers. 6 standard colours, and 6 others (turquoise, lilac and suchlike) which they ordered in batches. The kids looked AMAZING!

Kalevala · 25/01/2024 19:33

Royal blue polo, navy jumper, grey trousers, any colour school socks. Any black polishable shoes or boots. Navy and white for PE, any trainers.

VillageLite · 25/01/2024 19:36

I find navy sweatshirts fade the most, bottle green also fade.

White shirts need to be washed separately so they don’t go grey, which is a nuisance.

I think polo shirts the same colour as the jumper is most practical. I like red best personally - a bit brighter so stands out more on dark mornings, and reasonably widely available.

You would think that local supermarkets would stock uniform in the colours of their specific local primary schools, but perhaps that is too much to hope for.

AvengedQuince · 25/01/2024 19:40

I'm not really bothered by fading but I've lived in Australia where everything fades anyway.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/01/2024 19:40

I would definitely consider making trainers, joggers and leggings part of standard uniform. So much better for play.

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 25/01/2024 21:14

Bottle green jumpers/cardigans with grey skirts/trousers/pinafores and green/grey/black tights for those wearing skirts in winter, otherwise white or black socks. Green checked summer dresses. White polos. It was my school uniform back in the day and it's my kids now (although not the same school) so for me it's what school "should" look like.

I've taught at schools with various colours and uniforms I don't find aesthetically pleasing are maroon as the main colour, whatever the colours of the other stuff, and any time there's a yellow polo shirt... although I do like yellow checked summer dresses.

My high school uniform was navy but the summer uniform was a pink gingham dress.

It was replaced with a summer shirt but that's not relevant here.

But there is no reason the summer dress needs to be the same colour as the usual uniform.

Reading the thread I'm thinking a dress code type uniform might be better so skirts, pinafores, shorts, trousers, joggers or leggings in grey with maybe red, white and navy tops that can be polo shirts, jumpers, cardigans whatever and then an option for a summer dress.

I also think someone should phone around the local supermarkets and ask what colours they stock or can get.

If you want a logo put it on a hat, a baseball cap for summer and a beanie for winter.

What did the girls and boys wear when it wasn't summer? Pink T-shirts and navy jumpers?

Apart from pink gingham dresses I’ve never seen pink uniform for sale in shops.

Rummikub · 26/01/2024 08:12

Available even.

I like the any colour combo idea.
my dds were too slim for skirts/trousers so id get pinafores for them. In grey so easy to find.

Daskier · 26/01/2024 09:56

School uniform colours need to be gender neutral these days. There are far too many children identifying as "they" for there to be one rule for girls and another for boys.

WolfFoxHare · 26/01/2024 09:59

Ours is red - doesn’t fade but shows all the pen/paint marks. Navy has a tendency to fade to a purpley-grey colour. Our nursery uniform was purple which was actually great - didn’t fade and didn’t show marks up as obviously. Bit garish though!

I've never seen a uniform with two different colour schemes for the sexes.

PP about 3 posts up from mine was advocating pink for girls and OP was interested enough to ask for specifics.

A school near me had pink dress and maroon jumper. In winter it was just white shirt, grey bottoms and maroon jumper.

My favourite out of all the local schools is a bright blue but mainly because it's my favourite colour!
