There is a new school being established and governors need to decide on the uniform.

What would you go for?

My primary school colours were chosen as they were our headmistresses favourite colours: turquoise and purple.

We had grey skirts, trousers and jumpers/cardigans, sky blue shirts, purple and turquoise striped ties and bright purple blazers with huge shiny silver buttons. We looked very striking as a school when we went on trips 😂

I mean there is two different questions there for me, what looks the nicest / cutest and what’s the most practical and best long term option!

One primary near me has a different colour for each year group! They change colour every year (ie reception - yellow, yr -1 blue etc)

PP about 3 posts up from mine was advocating pink for girls and OP was interested enough to ask for specifics.

Oh OK, had to reread. I had thought they meant the boys also in pink. I don't think it's necessarily just a modern day gender issue though, I was a girl that hated pink and all things 'girly' in the nineties.

That is incredibly impractical! So parents need to buy new every year? And hand me downs may be the wrong size for the colour for the next child.

Our primary just stipulated a polo shirt in green and/or a green jumper or hoodie. Anything went otherwise. My boys usually wore joggers and I saw some in chino type trousers. The HT promoted trainers over school shoes which is a good idea I think. Far more practical.

if pressed I’d opt for no uniform. Why bother?

TheMainCharacter · 26/01/2024 12:58

My dc have royal blue jumpers which I really like. Washes well too.

Their school is very relaxed though and they can wear white or blue polos, grey, black or navy bottoms and navy or royal blue tops.

Just don’t do different uniform for different year groups as it really annoyed me for my older dc (at a different school) not being able to continue using something which still fit and not being able to pass stuff down because it didn’t fit the younger child in the right year.

bellamountain · 26/01/2024 13:03

No uniform would be much cooler and forward thinking. I always love watching American films and seeing the kids wear normal clothing, it just looks brighter and happier.

roarrfeckingroar · 26/01/2024 13:07

There's a Portuguese school near me with the most gorgeous slate grey and turquoise uniform

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 26/01/2024 15:12

Red.

steppemum · 26/01/2024 15:34

Never mind the colour, you should be looking at affordability and availability.
If this is state primary, them make it something that is sold in every supermarket, and available in different sizes and fabrics.

white polos
grey or black bottoms, of any description
keep it simple, affordable and practical.
white polos can be hot washed.
Coloured polos are not nearly as easy to find and they end up all being slightly different shades.

pe kits black shorts and white T shirts

No button shirts and no ties.

As for sweatshirts, make sure they are available locally and that there is a choice of sweatshirt and cardigan. If they must have a logo, make sure it isn't expensive.

after that - choose a colour! I think blue is good, I like navy. My kids had navy and it didn't really fade, they looked smart.
But an unusual colour can be cool, as long as it is available, there is a school near us that has purple, which looks really nice.

steppemum · 26/01/2024 15:36

and please be a cool school and allow (promote) all kids to wear trainers of any colour.
Get rid of crappy school shoes, and ensure girls can run roudn the playground and have dry feet.
Buying school shoes as soon as your kids are not easy standard size/shape is a nightmare

Coconutter24 · 26/01/2024 15:38

Navy or purple polos were a god send after spending loads on stain remover products for white polos. White polos and young children are a no go!! Definitely opt for a dark colour

Stickortwister · 26/01/2024 15:42

Active school uniform here. Everyone wears black joggers or shorts in summer.
Trainers no school shoes.
A choice of 5 colours of sweatshirt with school logo on (only branded thing) and same 5 colours of polo shirt. Doesn't have to be the same colour of polo and sweatshirt.
A rainbow of children in the playground looks great! They also don't need different clothes for pe lots of sport at lunchtime and encouraged to always have a spare set to change into if needed.
State small village primary school.
I love it.

Sounds good. I agree trainers would be better to run around in than school shoes.

JellicleCat · 26/01/2024 16:27

Local primary is jade and navy. But both options for polo and sweatshirt so you can have jade/jade, jade/navy, navy/navy or navy/jade combinations. It still is a recognizable uniform but allows for choice and individuality which I think is great. Girls tend to wear blue checked dresses in the summer, but one or two green ones.

Poppins2016 · 26/01/2024 16:33

For jumpers, I really like blue (not Navy, too dark), it suits most children and feels bright and happy. Then standard grey/white for trousers, skirts, dresses, polo shirts etc. which are then easily obtainable in a range of budgets.

Shadowsindarkplaces · 26/01/2024 16:33

Ds1 went to a prep, grey thick shirts, grey cord shorts, wool long grey socks, sage green woollen jumpers, practical, warm. All were repaired and mended by matron as needed. All I had to do was sew labels.
Black or brown brogue shoes.
Summer uniform, grey aertex short sleeve shirts, sandals.

SerafinasGoose · 26/01/2024 16:36

Pourmeanotherwine · 24/01/2024 22:44

I'd vote for not having a uniform, but I guess that's not an option, Seems a shame to be dressing 4 year olds in dull grey, why do we do this?

I'm with @Pourmeanotherwine. Do something radical and get rid of uniform entirely. It's unnecessary: continental and most US schools do tolerably well without it.

PuttingDownRoots · 26/01/2024 16:46

Since a common complaint appears to be board marker stains... I much preferred these were limited to just the school uniform.

If I had to decide between schools, all else being equal I would avoid one with white polos. We don't own anything else white so they would need to be hot washed in a wash on their own.

Kalevala · 26/01/2024 16:52

I think allowing two or three colour options for a polo, like white, sky blue and royal blue, with grey trousers and a navy jumper would work well.

Kalevala · 26/01/2024 16:54

Being able to put everything in a wash together is important to me.

worcesterpear · 26/01/2024 16:56

A couple of unusual uniforms I've come across in the past which I liked:
A special school (2-19): any black bottoms, pale blue or pale pink polos (not the usual polo shirt material, but like a football shirt). They did start out just with blue but some pupils asked for pink. I checked their website and they're now doing dark green and white, which still looks nice.

A primary in a deprived area: any plain bottoms, any plain t shirt, a school logo sweatshirt in a choice of bright colours. I checked their website and they're now onto the usual navy, white, grey combo.

Definitely any colour socks or tights, I can't believe people are stipulating the colour for those or the choice of shoes.

cosypompoms · 26/01/2024 19:26

@Daskier what I meant was that when girls (and any boys who want to) are wearing pink gingham summer dresses what are the rest wearing?

Yes! I believe they give each child one jumper per year. But even things like the summer dresses are the colour of the jumper.
