There is a new school being established and governors need to decide on the uniform.

What would you go for?

I'd go for the Italian school smock.

The kids can wear whatever they want underneath, the smock is their uniform but also the smock is what gets paint / glue / glitter on it not the child's clothes.

Don't they get hot in summer?

I don't think so, they are cotton so over shorts and a vest should be fine.

Also compared to the grey school trousers kids in the UK have to wear they would be cooler.

I think that smock is hideous (although to be fair, school uniform is generally not attractive!) I could get on board with some kind of tabard arrangement but that high neck/long sleeve/tight cuff thing looks uncomfortable.

As an aside, my kids wore shorts when it was hot, they didn't have to wear grey trousers. I would guess pretty much all UK primary schools allow shorts.

There's a school in Oxford where they wear whichever colour top they want* I always think it looks so cheerful!

*Actually it's house colours but you can't tell if you don't know

I think school uniform should be replaced with a dress code and people should wear more or less what they want.

Jade was the most amazing colour - a kind of green with a hint of blue. DC went to this school briefly and kept using the sweatshirts after as the colour was so gorgeous.

Tried to find pictures online but it looks more washed out. It's lovely in person.

zeddip · 25/01/2024 12:00

Not white, also I know a primary school with neon lime green ties, it looks horrid.

So no white or neon, anything else is fine!

zeddip · 25/01/2024 12:04

Oh also I love little summer dresses for girls and pinafore dresses rather than skirts and polo in the summer. So much comfier for them

caringcarer · 25/01/2024 12:10

Grey trousers or pinafore with navy polo shirt and navy sweatshirt. No logos.

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 25/01/2024 12:15

Primary School should have a primary colour in my opinion! White polo and blue or red jumper, grey bottoms. Easy to find in Supermarkets and other retailer, range of low cost options. They're all going to come home covered in pen and whiteboard marker anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

If this is a real life situation, let us know what colours you decide on op

Sanguinello · 25/01/2024 13:21

Asda seem to do school sweaters in every colour, including jade and purple.

Daskier · 25/01/2024 13:24

Round here it hasn't really been a free choice, it's been finding a colour that other local primaries don't already have. Purple, yellow and teal have been the most recent ones. The yellow's nicer than it sounds, yellow tops with grey jumpers.

TokyoSushi · 25/01/2024 13:27

Navy with a red polo looks lovely, and hides the stains! Grey bottoms.

Then a red checked dress and grey shorts/same polo in summer.

Robinbuildsbears · 25/01/2024 13:34

My primary school was blue and I always found it very boring. I always wished that I could wear the gingham dresses of other schools, green or yellow or even purple for the very lucky ones!

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 25/01/2024 15:55

Dark colours so the whiteboard marker shows up less. Or was it just my child in reception that used to get bloody whiteboard marker on their jumper all the time?!

TooOldForThisNonsense · 25/01/2024 15:58

Black or grey trousers/skirts jumpers
white or blue shirts/polos

maybe royal blue or red jumper.

nice and easy to get in a supermarket

my kids’ primary was navy but as they went through the school it became harder to get. Tesco/Asda for example stopped doing navy trousers.

Hate to say this... DD in Yr6 has been using her tie as a board wipe this year! And her shirts have pen stains.

And secondary school DD got paint on her skirt ....

CatamaranViper · 25/01/2024 16:02

A school round us has yellow polos and brown jumpers. It looks awful.

We currently have white polos and I think this is the stupidest thing ever. Kids start here when they're 3 fgs!! I can't even trust DH who is 36 to wear a white top without getting it scruffy.

Honestly, go for a bus seat print, shows no stains.

Bbq1 · 25/01/2024 16:08

Yellow(more golden) polo's with maroon/burgundy sweatshirts is a lovely colour combination. Grey bottoms. Navy is too dark a colour for you children.

Mumofthree2024 · 25/01/2024 16:08

Whatever you opt for try to make it easy to get cheaply.
my sons school is wonderful, but their uniform is very strict for a state primary. Bottle Green skirts/pinafores only, green tights. Have to have green coats, the school hats-both logo’d for summer and winter, a specific rucksack & so on. Gold polo shirts, have to be the logo ones, same with sweatshirts.

specific PE kits-both indoor and outdoor.

whilst it looks lovely it isn’t the cheapest!

pinkpanther84 · 25/01/2024 16:09

I would say definitely not white polo shirts, they show every stain and go grey. Would much prefer light blue

Rummikub · 25/01/2024 17:58

I didn’t think they were allowed to insist on unnecessarily specific items for uniforms. Wasn’t the legislation passed last year?

EveryOtherNameTaken · 25/01/2024 18:26

I had a navy skirt and red jumper which was unusual. Now though, as much as I love red tops, a tiny bit if me feels like I'm formal wearing it. Of all colours not to be able to enjoy without that reminder 😂

Go neutral.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/01/2024 18:31

Anything apart from white polo shirts!!! Choose a coloured shirt that can be bought in local supermarkets

JobMatch3000 · 25/01/2024 18:39

I've never seen anything other than white or light blue shirts/ polos in my local (large) supermarkets.
