Prepping for Pandemic... 14

FuckThisWind · 12/03/2020 18:55

OK folks, we have been prepping for a Pandemic for 13 threads now. And a Pandemic we now have.

I think we all know this has gone beyond prepping now. And most of us agree that the UK Government has not really stepped up to the mark. We have had shared advice here from our Italian residents and those in other countries who have taken much more stringent measures.

So this thread continues to be about us being prepared. But it is more than that. It is about support, sharing of information and advice. It is now a community. A community who acknowledged a long time ago that this was always 'Not Just The Flu'

I thank you one and all for being here. We have tough times ahead. But we are all still here. Please share, rant, whatever. The great thing about these threads is that they have always been supportive and non judgemental. I like to think it's a safe space for all of us who are concerned. And trying to do our best. For ourselves. For our loved ones. And for our community and beyond.

@inmylifeIlovedthemall

Thank you 🌷

Feel free to PM me too!

I honestly don’t know what I’d have done if I hadn’t found you guys 🌷💕.

Quite possibly been one of the ‘utterly conned by the govt’ 😖🤷🏻‍♀️

I’d have had Panadol & loo roll though 🤣always do

wheresmymojo · 14/03/2020 11:30

Honestly I think those of you who want to take your DC out should just do it.

They're your children.

Just say they have a fever and a cough and have to isolate for 7 days.

Then in 7 days say it again.

Then it's Easter.

They will have so many DC out over the coming weeks there is no way they'll be able to follow up with every family.

AlohaMolly · 14/03/2020 11:30

@wheresmymojo thank you, you’re right and I know you’re right - I just keep thinking of all the places I’ve been and things I’ve touched this week, and the cough and aches I’ve been ignoring etc etc. I felt a bit better after my cry though!! I’ve prepped for it, I knew it was coming, it’s just scarier than expected to be confronted with it so soon.

I live in a tiny village and work on a smallish island, normally national/international events don’t really effect us!

Destinysdaughter · 14/03/2020 11:31

Just went into my small Asda. They had a delivery of enormous bags of pasta, never seen them that size before! Hardly any tinned tomatoes and can't find red lentils for love nor money right now!

AlohaMolly · 14/03/2020 11:32

Oh in terms of cleaning toys, when I worked in a nursery, we would use Milton tablets in hot water and dump the toys in.

itsnotjustflu · 14/03/2020 11:33

I don't no sorry

notanothercold · 14/03/2020 11:39

Am I living in a parallel universe?? I have just been for a drive through the village here and it's buzzing. SO many people out and about. I'm astounded.

pasanda · 14/03/2020 11:39

I've made a few comments on corona threads but have been folllwing this one the most as it's lovely and supportive and helped me buy in the things that are now hard to get, so thank you.
I know I'm just an internet random but I have just had a chat with my best friend who knows someone who was in the cobra meeting with BJ (I know, I know, I wouldn't believe me too) but she said he's planning to shut schools on the 20th. He seems to be doing U turns but is (apparently) doing everything in stages to prevent mass hysteria.
To all those worried about deregistering, taking them out early etc just do it. Say they have a cold this week and by Friday they'll be shut anyway that's what I'm going to do.
I just had to fly to Thailand to see my son who is travelling around on a gap year (mental health issues Sad) I went there Tuesday morning and got back last night so am knackered but seeing the news re flights being cancelled or turning round mid air (!) I'm now worrying he'll never get home! He's got 2 months left, visiting Philippines, Bali and Oz. What to advise? I'm pretty sure he'll just carry on regardless but it's such a worry he'll be stuck in a place with shitty health care with no way of getting out.

ooopsupsideyourhead · 14/03/2020 11:40

@Readyme and normally I like Dr Christian! His comments don’t seem to echo those of doctors/nurses etc. Working on the front line!

savethecat · 14/03/2020 11:43

Sorry, changed my name back.
Yes, people gathering, shopping in small village charity stores and shops, post office, runners....I cant believe I am watching the same news as everyone else.

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 11:44

I’ve gone right off Dr Christian he can pack his stethoscope and go help in Italy if he’s that judgy!

MrsWhites · 14/03/2020 11:48

Anyone listening to BBC news, they have a lady on there who basically said there may be some logic in flattening the curve but how can they expect this to happen when they have literally put no measures in place to do that!

Well said!!

ElizabethG81 · 14/03/2020 11:50

I apologise in advance as I know this must have been discussed a million times but there are so many threads I'm finding it hard to locate things.

Does anyone have a list of things you've got prepped for say a 2-3 week period? I'm a single parent with two children under 10, so am also thinking of things we'll need to stop ourselves going insane if stuck in for a few weeks.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/03/2020 11:54

Dr Christian is a grade A twat.

Readyme · 14/03/2020 11:54

@pasanda I would tell him to avoid Indonesia and Philippines due to their lack of health care infrastructure and high rates of poverty and close living could make it a dangerous place in an outbreak.

Milton is great for cleaning kids stuff, I prefer tablets but the bottles liquid is just as good.
For wooden toys I would divide them up and rotate them.

@AlohaMolly sorry it's potentially hit so close to home.
I've had a few friends and family suddenly wake up to the info I've been trying to pass on. Many of them had holidays to Spain and Italy booked for Easter. I told them weeks ago that it was highly unlikely they would be going, the all either rolled their eyes or laughed. Now they are all shocked I was right. Hopefully they will start paying attention and making their own plans.

Orchidflower1 · 14/03/2020 11:54

@ElizabethG81 I think further back in this thread someone posted a list.

Ds has just informed me he’d rather eat the hamster food than the two tins of corned beef in the corona cupboard! Hope it doesn’t come to that ( I like corned beef hash anyway!).

butterflylove81 · 14/03/2020 11:55

I'm feeling really panicky. I'm 8 weeks pregnant work for the nhs and just feel a bit worried I've been trying to stay calm but now I've had a panic attack I have severe anxiety anyway and I haven't stocked up on anything but I'm so washed out with morning sickness that I'm struggling to get organised. Can someone tell me what I need to go out and buy? I have diabetes so worrying about medications I also was supposed to be sent a prescription from my psychiatrist for my medication and it hasn't arrived and I don't have many left. Trying to prepare myself for work on Monday but at the moment just feel anxious and fatigued

SistemaAddict · 14/03/2020 11:57

@itsnotjustflu don't worry. I was trying to find it via google but can't find anything. No one at our primary school seems worried at all. Except me. Or maybe I'm the only one saying anything.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/03/2020 12:02

@butterflylove81

How many in your household? Plan for 3-4 weeks worth of food if you can. Think about soap, bleach, cleaning products, loo roll. You don’t need antibacterial wash, normal soap is fine.

Sprayitall · 14/03/2020 12:04

A general word of caution For anyone - please remember this is a preppers thread that has been going on long even before Brexit. Also there are long time preppers here. This is not a stockpiling thread. If you going to be a prepper, what we would suggest is to buy whatever you usually buy for a week and buy one or two things extra if you can afford them ahead. The preppers here have always done that. Also buy easy ready meals and soups and meds that you might need if you have to stay put for two weeks. Ask for your prescription meds early and have them in stock may be. Also extra dose of vitamins c and d will help along with full tank of petrol/diesel.

colouringinpro · 14/03/2020 12:05

Several cases in both of my local hospitals. My dd was in for a day two weeks ago, she's asymptomatic so guess we missed it. Hope Pasanda's friend is right re schools closing on 20th, still in two minds what to do next week...

Justmum89 · 14/03/2020 12:06

Sent DH to get our normal weekly shop. Not ready to start on the preps yet.

This is where the milk lives in our local asda 😭🙈

colouringinpro · 14/03/2020 12:06

Bercows I'm the same - posted on class WhatsApp- what are people thinking about last Corona update from school? Only one reply!

SistemaAddict · 14/03/2020 12:13

I'm heading up to the shops now. I can't say I've seen any stockpiling so far. I work on the basis of one in use, one in the stash as a minimum depending on what it is. It's fresh stuff I run out of but have not been persuaded into the world of dehydrators.

MrsWhites · 14/03/2020 12:22

@Bercows that’s my philosophy too, always buy a pack of pasta etc each week even if we already have one in use. My husband has been moaning at me for years, that we don’t need one more tin of soup, peas etc....he’s not moaning now!

Like you I’m having to venture out for fresh. Particularly eggs and the like, I think I’m going to start freezing them now and am also going to have a go at growing at least potatoes!
