Sorry I couldn't find a new thread. If there is one already, I'll have this deleted.

Will get links etc brought over from last thread too.

I've just downloaded the nest egg app. I'm going to have a go at going through the pantry later and keeping a list of everything.

Just on best before dates/use by dates ( and only based on my own experience and research...)

If ambient foods such as tins, jars and packets have a "best before" date on them, then generally they are likely to be fine beyond this date. If you have a tin of beans for example with a BB date of 01/02/2020, they will still be edible but newer tins might taste fresher IYKWIM.

Use By dates mean just that...use it by the date stated, or freeze it. I don't risk it with meat, poultry etc. but with other things I might be more lenient.

Veg - I totally ignore dates, and use up in stocks, stews and sauces. potatoes don't go off because they are two days past a date on a package.

It avoids food waste, additional expense and having been brought up in a household known for their tendency to frequently eat "out of date" food I take most dates as a guideline.

(not saying that you should all do this though)

In the last half an hour I've seen social media posts from friends, one saying that the virus has been made up by people like Bill Gates to cover the fact that it's the 5G network that's killing us, and another asking if people have actually seen any pics of people with CV because there doesn't seem to be any out there so it must be fake?

These are people I would deem to be sensible and intelligent.

I might have to come off facebook for a while.

RedLentilYellowLentil · 11/03/2020 13:19

I relate to that @LauraKsWhiteCoat. My sister came over yesterday and took every opportunity to argue and mock. As she left, she said, 'Well, I'll know where to come if I run out of toilet roll!' She's part of the 'it's just like flu' brigade and thinks the modest amount of prepping my budget runs to is hilarious, but if the shtf she'll totally expect me to help her out. I think this stuff is posturing tbh, as she prepped like mad for Brexit and would be the first to panic buy if there were snow forecast, but she's a front-line HCP and I think the denial is deep in primary care atm. Hospital staff, especially in acute specialties, are much more awake to what's about to hit us. I expect if she really grovels I'll help her out, but I'd have been tempted to tell your friend to sort out her own shopping. You must be nicer than me!

applesandpears33 · 11/03/2020 13:21

I agree re best before dates. One exception I've found though is yeast and bread mixes. The yeast degrades quite quickly after the best before dates and the bread doesn't rise as well.

What is the nest egg app? I can't see it on the playstore

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 13:24

Oooo @NatoPMT you've had your post deleted. *slaps wrist

Nest egg app - there seems to be four choices in google store. But all related to finance not food. What does it look like please? Does anyone have a link? It's one of the first things I'm going to do when we take DS out of school. He can help.

@rhij86 Also debated the same about FB but I use it everyday for work. To be honest a lot of people are getting better but there's still a few who like to show their less sensible and intelligent side

MotherOfDragonite · 11/03/2020 13:26

Hello preppers. I am finding it hard to keep up with all the threads, but it's good to find you all back here.

I am gearing up to isolate at home with two small children from Friday night and I have to admit that I am really dreading it. But it feels wrong at this stage to continue taking them in to school/nursery.

London is weird. It is actually still quite busy, very few people are wearing masks, and it is very much life as normal. But I have now heard from several friends who are self-isolating after contact with either confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases. Alarmingly, no testing is being done until the person has been in touch with a confirmed case or has been to an affected region.

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 11/03/2020 13:26

alwayscheerful an app called nest egg was recommended on a previous thread for logging and keeping track of supplies and where they are, when they expire etc. I've been using it and really like it.

Thanks for the new thread fuckthiswind

Another day, another punnet of mushrooms in the dehydrator 😁

I’ve been compiling my hamper for the very oap in my life. Curry sauces, rice pouches, lots of chocolate, biscuits, cake type snacks. Paracetamol, the last pack of dettol wipes on the shelf (I use the neat liquid diluted myself), tissues and some dried fruit. Going to try and track down some foil trays later to portion up left over dinner from this evening. Cake in oven.

I can easily donate some loo roll, wondering if I should add a uht milk but don’t want to alarm or panic.

I feel confident I can shut my own family up and get us through most things, but my dear old relative is not in good health and would flatly refuse to come here.

aliasname · 11/03/2020 13:28

DH office today sent everyone home for at least a week. Most of them have laptops and can work from home.

I work in the NHS (non-clinical) and there just isn't the IT infrastructure to work from home for most admin staff. Nobody has laptops, computers haven't been upgraded for years, IT haven't had funding.

Funkycats · 11/03/2020 13:29

How long do mushrooms take in a dehydrator please? I bought one to help with a zero food waste challenge, but not tried it yet.

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 13:30

@ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu do you have a screenshot or link for the app please? all the ones I'm finding are to do with finance thanks

Oxyiz · 11/03/2020 13:34

@gloriamumsnet - why on earth would suggesting ignoring the goady fuckers get a thread pulled down? Confused

These are people who post antagonistically and mockingly, and it's happened on almost every single thread now. It then takes pages of quarrels for them to eventually go away. Are you condoning their behaviour?

RedLentilYellowLentil · 11/03/2020 13:37

Alarmingly, no testing is being done until the person has been in touch with a confirmed case or has been to an affected region.

Or even if they have, it seems. There was an item on the Guardian feed earlier about a Kent family who have been unwell since coming back from an Italian ski resort 9 days ago. Every day they ring 111 and every day they're told they're on the list for testing and someone will come soon, just be patient. Assuming they're not the only ones, it's quite clear the numbers are wildly inaccurate, and more importantly that unwell people are in danger of missing out on the care they need.

Posharmchairs · 11/03/2020 13:39

@Funkycats I’ve but mine in on 75 for 10 hours. I’ll have a sterile kilner on the side waiting about 9pm and pop them in just before bed 😊

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/03/2020 13:41

I wish I had more biscuits in. I think I'm going to need to self isolate soon and I can only face biscuits at the moment.

Sprayitall · 11/03/2020 13:41

@tryingtoprep On one side, I wish and still hope U.K. has the resources to tackle it as a breeze but it makes me twitchy when I see how Italy is struggling. I don’t wish to compare China to this because of the sudden onset, caught unprepared and the extensive population, the “may be more” numbers which all made it very challenging but still impressive for a reactive response. I also believe, If only they had the luxury of time / the time to prepare and being “proactive” like our country they would have done it far better. But Italy is similar to us in many ways (being a first world country and the population numbers etc) so that makes me scared.

@rhij86 no words. Amen. I think Facebook is full of “it’s just the flu” group

Sprayitall · 11/03/2020 13:43

@RedLentilYellowLentil no they are not testing everyone and contact tracing is not easy.

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 13:45

Oops. Soz

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 13:46

Yup my friend tried to get tested again today. A big “nope, go home you malingerer”

rhij86 · 11/03/2020 13:47

@natopmt what are they suggesting he does about the fact that he can't bloody breathe?! honestly I despair Sad

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 13:48

I'd missed the post asking us not to use codewords. Why should people come on here to bully us, goad us, name call and criticise us. I'm all for freedom of speech but provoking people should not be condoned in any way. Reporting or no reporting.

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 13:49

ah no @NatoPMT maybe they've not rolled out the 10,000 yet?
