Sorry I couldn't find a new thread. If there is one already, I'll have this deleted.

Will get links etc brought over from last thread too.

@LauraKsWhiteCoat

Yes! I do.

My parents are coming to visit on Friday. They are likely to give me serious Hmm faces.

I've also heard it all at work - I've stopped listening to the "it's just flu" chatter.

I'm happy that I've prepared for my family. and that if it all goes to hell in a hand cart, we'll be okay to batten down the hatches.

rhij86 · 11/03/2020 12:23

Can I ask, where people have babies/toddlers that are now on full fat milk not formula, what are you doing there? Will you be sourcing fresh milk as and when you run out/get down to your last bottle? Or is long life ok?

We don't usually use masses, as DS has breakfast at my mums, and only one bottle of milk at bed time, but if/when we are told to work from home/self isolate we'll obviously get through substantially more.

@laurakswhitecoat I haven't had any double standards yet, only people telling me I'm being paranoid and worrying too much. I would have said if she always has enough food for a couple of weeks, why did she run out of loo roll and pasta Hmm (I wouldn't actually have said it, but would have been thinking it)

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 12:23

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring 🌷🌷

Is the flat short term? Will you have to use public transport? Can you hire a car if so? I know that’s hugely disturbing restrictive and I couldn’t, but worth asking. I’m so sorry you’re having to make such difficult choices. I’m thinking of you

@WelliAmNot - overseas would be a no for me. The country may / will catch up on numbers, you’d potentially be stranded. I think the countryside sounds better. I have a countryside option too but feel more comfortable in my own home in London as I have what I need here.

@FuckThisWind I hope she’s feeling better soon, glad she’s off school

Bean feast... there’s a blast from the past. As someone who stopped eating met in the 80s, I lived on beast feast and sosmix. And chips and chocolate, obvs.

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 12:27

How to self isolate at home and in a shared house www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0868l76 interesting

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 12:28

@LauraKsWhiteCoat I don’t tell people I’ve prepped - only those I know I’d give my last frozen pasta sauce to. I don’t have the energy to argue if they dismiss a suggestion to prepare, plus if they dismiss it, they’ve been warned. If they’re anxious and unprepared I’m likely to discuss it with them but more advice on what to do

There’s still most fresh ingredients in my supermarket for batch cooking. There’s glaring gaps though. Co-op staff told me today that they are now not delivering a lot of lines, so it’s not just sold off the shelves, it’s not in the warehouse any more 😔

My freezer is full so I can’t batch cook anymore

I’ve not done a shop over £15 for 2 weeks now, I nearly bought the last antibac wipes packet yesterday and just walked away...I nearly panic bought but stopped myself as I don’t need it.

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 12:29

but obvious lol

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 12:30

Cookies - not ‘disturbing’, that was supposed to say financially restrictive.

On the short term, just to clarify, what would their terms be, if someone else needed it would they ask you to leave with no notice for eg?

I hope you’re managing ok ❤️

VenetoResident · 11/03/2020 12:30

@rhij86

We are not confined to our houses.

But the advice is that you don't come within a metre of anyone you don't live with.

So out for a walk - yes

Dinner with parents - no - even if you're feeling well you could still be infectious.

But if they continue to provide childcare whilst you work (the situation for many here with schools cancelled but people still working) - I would say you're part of the same household.

What you need to consider is do you want to protect them or infect them? I'm not being goady. If they stay in but you go out to work, that's what would happen.

Re milk - I calculated the amount we drink per day and bought as much as possible up to the use by date of fresh, then the Cravendale type. Finally we have about 6 litres in the freezer and 12 litres of UHT. That means we're shopping as little as possible. We also have loads of long life bread.

@Readyme - childcare swaps between two families would work well. The more we can narrow the contact the better. But with people going out to work it's not so narrow.

@NatoPMT - no 6pm curfew here. But the bars and restaurants are shut from 6pm. Which means many restaurants are effectively closed as they don't open until 7pm. There has been talk of a curfew but nothing yet. Supermarkets are open normal hours as are takeaway pizzerias.

Shops and bars have signs about the 1m safety zone. It's not really being adhered to here. Although my favourite coffee bar announced today they were closing until further notice.

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring - how would you be travelling? Car or public transport? 🌷🌷

@nannynick We bought an emergency supply of Dairy Milk (hard and expensive to get here). The DC found and ate it all!

@Welliamnot would you be alone overseas? Or with an adult?

@FuckThisWind I'm glad you've got 'permission' it will really ease your mind. I hope your DD feels better soon.

Readyme · 11/03/2020 12:31

@LauraKsWhiteCoat you are far too kind I wouldn't have given her a thing.
I was pretty blunt with those that know we prep, I prep for my own household only.

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 12:33

@NatoPMT I was told the same thing by Co-Op especially about soap... Our freezer #2 should be full but it didn't arrive so got food sat going out of date. I blame DH

LauraKsWhiteCoat · 11/03/2020 12:36

@laurakswhitecoat I haven't had any double standards yet, only people telling me I'm being paranoid and worrying too much. I would have said if she always has enough food for a couple of weeks, why did she run out of loo roll and pasta hmm (I wouldn't actually have said it, but would have been thinking it)

I did say that... I replied "Oh great, thought you'd run out of pasta but you obviously don't need it".

She's relying on Tesco delivery. I wonder whether it will actually deliver all that she has ordered. If it doesn't I think the panic may well set in then.

Plus people saying "Oh nonsense, there's plenty in the shops".... a) there is NOW, but look how long it took for shops to run out of hand sanitizer and toilet paper, and b) if you're ill - the LAST thing you're going to want to do is go shopping and c) even if you're not ill, do you really want to go mixing with others in the supermarket if you can avoid it?

WelliAmNot · 11/03/2020 12:41

@VenetoResident Abroad I would be alone. In the city I live in a HMO along with partner, countryside I would be with my parents.

Babyfairy0923 · 11/03/2020 12:43

Hi all! New here but I’ve just started some prep- got some essentials in from the supermarket. What has everyone done to be fully prepared? I’m feeling anxious so I think it would help to know I’ve done all I can!

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 12:44

Thanks for clarification Veneto- I definitely read a 6pm curfew but the quality of journalism is not great and articles are being churned out quickly 🤦‍♀️

@itsnotjustflu I had a freezer deliver mishap too. Thankfully I got one in Feb but filled that in about 4 mins

I’m just trying to streamline it now, going to take out Older quorn as it gives me stomach cramps and offer it to the neighbours

Sprayitall · 11/03/2020 12:45

Meanwhile, In India Kerala has just under 10 cases and the schools, cinema theatres, libraries, museums are closed. All the public places and transports are sprayed every trip up and down. No meetings or large gatherings allowed and anyone with temperature are tested. Our state (less than 3 cases) tests temperature at the airports on arrival, schools have notified parents about impending closure, insurance companies have contacted people who need to up their policies and elders have been prescribed their much needed medications ahead for three months (includes the being tested meds such as chloroquine and altemra, inhalers etc - yes all this costs money from pocket but not too exorbitant as there is also government pharmacy that offers the meds at low price £2.00 for 100 paracetamol tablets) -This is what a normal proactive democracy looks like. I don’t care if you say it’s a third world country , atleast we don’t have to listen to this authoritarian send your child to school or face consequences type of talks amidst chaos and live in fear .Sorry rant over. Dh loves a spat and is now regretting to have missed that conversation. Tomorrow should be interesting.

Sprayitall · 11/03/2020 12:45

that conversation with the school*

Funkycats · 11/03/2020 12:49

Hello everyone. I had lost you 🙄 Did someone post about long life milk? Sorry it was a few pages back. I used some in porridge and rice pudding recently and it was about 3 weeks out of date. Tasted fine and we are still here to tell the tale.

rhij86 · 11/03/2020 12:50

@VenetoResident not taken as goady at all, don't worry. My mum has also asked if we were to become infected, there is the option to leave my son with them for however long necessary - they have a cot, nappies, food, clothes etc. It's just so difficult to decide what to do for the best. If we were to become ill, I would want him to avoid it if at all possible, (and them of course), but if we all became ill then in theory DH and I would be better placed to have him, as we would cope better with the illness due to their age... or would we?

It's just such a concerning time for everyone.

Funkycats · 11/03/2020 12:57

Hello @Babyfairy0923 you have come to the right place. Take a look at the links on the first page of this post, and perhaps have a nose at the brexit board too. The earlier prepping posts contain plenty of lists of what people having been buying.
We've been considering food, menus, meds, easy food for if you're feeling unwell, ideas for food a child could help themselves to if you are feeling rough, activities for families in self isolation etc.
I have batch cooked lots of stews and soups to reheat from freezer, in case of being unable to get fresh veg. Pets meds including 6 months supply of flea stuff.
I have been so grateful to these threads recently (started for brexit) because we were able to avoid adding to the chaos on the shops recently.

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 13:00

Any teacher collaborate this rumour that schools are preparing a months worth of school work for schools to close?

I’ll text my dep head friend but she’s at work so doesn’t open texts till 3:30

GloriaMumsnet · 11/03/2020 13:01

Hi everyone, we're not a fan of 'code words' - they're divisive and will result in the thread getting pulled eventually.

If everyone could stay within the guidelines that would be great, and if you think another member is breaking them, please report these to us.

Thanks!

Funkycats · 11/03/2020 13:02

Did anyone see the Italian towns on TV this morning? 10 people allowed in the supermarket at anyone time, so there was a line of people waiting, all standing several metres apart from each other.
That's what I'm hoping to avoid by prepping.

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 13:03

@NatoPMT It's mostly bread products so I guess eggy bread and fried bread it is. If we haven't run out of eggs. I realised today I need more oil. He bought from some backstreet place as most other places were about out of freezers - he wanted drawers!

@Babyfairy0923 I believe threads 2&3 are full of helpful suggestions of what to prep. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

@Sprayitall My DH also loves a spat and that is where I fear sensible will not come into this

I haven't even looked at the sell buys on all my UHT. How long does it normally last? We are saving it for porridge and strong tea!!

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 13:04

tryingtoprep · 11/03/2020 13:06

Trying to catch up. Thanks for the new thread.

@Sprayitall I'm impressed. That's an approach I wish we'd seen here. On a related note, I wonder whether we (in the UK) have enough stock of the drugs that have shown promise so far? The government's relaxed attitude might partly be because they are assured a) Early treatment, which increases chances of survival (and not getting serious in the first place) and b) Access to all the so far reasonably effective drugs (I'm aware there's no definite drug yet - I think?).

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring I wish I knew what to advise. I'd be inclined to take the flat so you can limit travelling. It will be so exhausting. Sending best wishes to your family. I hope things go well for him.

Beanfeast. I used to love it! Didn't know you could still get any. Tofu is lovely baked in a marinade. Olive oil, herbs and spices, cover the tofu in it them bake for around 30 minutes.
