Sorry I couldn't find a new thread. If there is one already, I'll have this deleted.

Will get links etc brought over from last thread too.

Can I check in? I am losing track of all the threads as they are so fast moving...have been lurking for a while when I can.

Took my two primary aged DC out of school last Monday (deregistered), enjoying home Ed so far..trying to keep them up with the National Curriculum - both of them are chuffed with the one:to:one meaning we've been able to focus learning things that have passed them by in the classroom...I.e times tables, fractions (they struggle mostly with maths). I am trying to see this as a positive during these anxious times - extra time with my DC.

I am very anxious reading about the state of the healthcare system in Italy now and what is to come for us in two weeks. I knew it was coming but I'm still alarmed.

Lifesatoot · 11/03/2020 09:46

Dust masks with filters available at normal prices at Screwfix either for delivery or collection - lots of stores around London - if anyone needs any for peace of mind.

rhij86 · 11/03/2020 09:47

So I have a 'lockdown' question, and also a self isolation one I guess.

If we were put into lockdown like Italy, how strict is that likely to be - for example are we confined to our houses? (Italy doesn't seem to be) or could I still go to my parents house for roast dinner, presuming we were all well?

This sort of goes for self isolation too. Given that it takes 5 days for symptoms to appear, and I see my parents daily as they provide childcare, chances are if one of us caught it, we'd all get it. So in that instance if one of us is told to self isolate, would we still be ok to visit eachother providing we were going house-car-house without coming into contact with anyone else inbetween?

I'm leaning towards the first scenario being ok, the second one not, but just wondered other peoples thoughts?

Hello all, this thread really feels like a safe place with sensible people and great advice, sharing tips and information, so I thank you all for being here.

Rubbish nights sleep, I like the idea of moving the phone away because I woke up checking it around 5 times throughout the night Blush

I am feeling increasingly nervous while doing school runs as I need to use public transport, a lot of people coughing however they seem to have scarfs covering their mouths.
I think we walk to school even though it will take a while because it's packed everyone's on top of one another and I can't stop my daughter from holding on to the poles and stuff because the seats are always full.

itsnotjustflu · 11/03/2020 10:03

Well said @mrswhites - welcome, you are going to fit right in here :)

Good news that they are upping testing from 1,500 to 10,000
Bit late for @NatoPMT friend but maybe they can go back? I feel better they're testing more people now.

@DominicCummingsForehead well done. We may be coming to you for tips soon. Our DS is year 2 and hoping to pull him soon. I want to deregister. DH wants to argue the toss if they try and fine us grrrr....men

@rhij86 I guess it's how much you want to risk it. My MIL is walking distance so if we self isolate and she does the same we will still go see her and vica versa. We also live near the beach so plan to visit that as well but we wouldn't risk going anywhere else or seeing people that we don't know where they've been etc. So yes house car house should be fine in that instance.

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 10:13

Rhij the Italian lockdown isn’t like Wuhans

They have a 6pm curfew (someone asked why, presumably to stop parties and drinking as the mayor or someone told young people they had to stop socialising and kinda blamed them) and most shops are shut and they have a meter ( or 3m) exclusion zone round each person so they can’t be near each other - their transport is open but they are only allowed to sit with several seats between them

I’m thinking ours might be similar with more or less restrictive. Possibly less restrictive as we no restrictions currently

NatoPMT · 11/03/2020 10:13

Thanks flu, I’ll let him know to try again

rhij86 · 11/03/2020 10:15

@NatoPMT so within reason (and obviously taking into consideration safety for others - IE if you are actually sick then you should stay home!) we could be able to move around - visit family etc. I guess we'll only know the answer to that once the govt pull their fingers out if it happens

Oxyiz · 11/03/2020 10:19

I think we need a code or something to just ignore the people who like to drop in and criticise or antagonise. It takes up valuable thread space to respond. Maybe we could ignore them like the utter obvious wankers that they are?

WwwashYourHands · 11/03/2020 10:26

Morning all. Checking in here. Grateful for new thread.

Legoandloldolls · 11/03/2020 10:27

Getting Travel insurance is proving tricky now.

Aviva have stopped insurance against travel disruption and corna virus.

Dang. I will need that holiday come July. Oh well. If not that's another 5k spare to spend on wine I guess? 😭😭😭😭😭😭

@rhij86 from what I understand if someone gets it they aren't allowed to leave their property for any reason. But it would appear that others in the household can leave the house of no symptoms.
So if you Got it you couldn't leave the house to go to parents, however you kids could providing another adult could take them or the could go by themselves.

rhij86 · 11/03/2020 10:35

@readyme yes that's what I thought, thank you. Although if I got it, chances are DH and DC would also get it - our house is so small - so I would worry about them going out incase they just weren't showing symptoms yet...?

Good morning, thanks for starting the new thread

RedLentilYellowLentil · 11/03/2020 10:45

I meant the medical experts like CMOs and SAGE members who presumably have oversight of the whole picture rather than individual GPs for example.

Yes, I did too @Pegase. It sounds like we'll have to agree to disagree about this, which is fine, as lots of people in my life disagree with me that Covid-19 is (a) a big deal and (b) being mismanaged in the UK, although lots agree too. None of us will know for sure until it's substantially over and we can look back at lessons to be learned. I expect there'll still be a fair amount of disagreement even then.

I'm not sure what your comment to me at the end of the last thread was about @inmylifeIlovedthemall. I'm going to assume it should have been directed at someone else.

Thanks for the new thread @FuckThisWind. Smile

Readyme · 11/03/2020 10:48

@rhij86 yes kids would likely be asymptomatic carriers. Our house doesn't really lend itself to isolation of family members too, if one gets it I will assume we all have it even if some of us are asymptomatic.

Are you parents in good health?
I can see this being a real dilemma in the coming weeks for the grandparents who provide childcare. I wonder if local families could team up and swap childcare duties?

Sprayitall · 11/03/2020 10:51

@applesandpears33 Instead of tofu you can try cottage cheese (paneer) - it can be frozen and used if the plan is to use it in a curry. Or if you are specific about tofu - you can sauté and marinate it for thirty minutes to infuse intense flavours.

rhij86 · 11/03/2020 10:52

@readyme my dad had a stroke 4 years ago but other than that it's 'just' their age that makes them more vulnerable (mum approaching 60, dad 65). We all need to sit down and have a convo as a family about what we're willing to do and what we're not. They provide childcare for us so I can see that needing to stop at some point soon as well, at which point work will have to suck it up and let me wfh or I'll have to go on the sick

WrapTrap · 11/03/2020 10:53

Grateful for new thread. Checking in. Will pull oldest out of preschool by end of week I think. Like @itnotjusttheflu we live reasonably close to beach/woods so lots of trips. Dh immune suppressed, he's stopped commuting into London.

MrsWhites · 11/03/2020 10:54

Thanks for the welcome @itsnotjustflu.

I see Poland have closed schools, museums etc with only 26 confirmed cases. It seems crazy that we are still delaying the inevitable. Also can’t believe that the authorities thought that the Cheltenham festival should still go ahead!

Readyme · 11/03/2020 10:58

@applesandpears33 did it say silken tofu? That stuff is usually softer great for vegan fried rice but less so if you want to five it up for a curry.
I would look in the chilled aisle for extra firm tofu, it usually keeps in fridge for 4-6 weeks, that stuff is much better for adding to curries and Tofu.
If you wrap it in kitchen paper or tea towel place it between two upside down plates then add heavy tins to the top plate it really squeezes out the extra leaving a firm tofu that crisps well.

If you like green lentils / Puy lentils that are great for using in place of minced beef in a recipie. They keep their shape unlike red lentils.
