I study in Prague.

The Czech Republic took things up another notch and have just declared a state of emergency.

"The government has declared a state of emergency throughout the Czech Republic for 30 days due to the occurrence of coronavirus, valid from 14:00.

The new measures requires pubs, restaurants, and other food-service establishments to close from 8pm to 6am, effective Friday.

From Friday 6:00 am onwards, the public is banned from sport areas, wellness centers, and libraries.

Effective Friday morning, public and private events with more than 30 participants are also banned."

Foreigners from 13 risky countries are banned from entering the country, and all border crossing with Germany and Austria will also be limited. Those countries include China, South Korea, Iran, Italy, Spain, Austria , Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Great Britain, Denmark, and France.

There are currently now 94 people confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the Czech Republic, from 1,816 tested. Forty-eight of which are in Prague."

Meanwhile in Britain...

@Pluckedpencil 👋

Are you North or South? Would be interesting to compare and contrast between the regions.

AlohaMolly · 12/03/2020 14:42

4 bloody 15!! That surely must mean it’s serious news? 590 seems a huge jump too.

tryingtoprep · 12/03/2020 14:43

Well done Czech Republic. Quite rightly they've included the UK on their list of infected countries. That's what we are now. People worrying about travelling abroad should do. Not because the destination might be risky - but because we are the risky country. Flights might be banned from the UK. So much for protecting the economy, Boris. That's the UK tourism industry fucked. He's so shortsighted.

84TinsOfBeans · 12/03/2020 14:48

@PancakeFiend my best friends niece goes there

@tryingtoprep

NHS England has confirmed the deaths of two more patients, bringing the death toll to 10.

A spokesperson for Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust said: "We can confirm that, sadly, an 89-year-old patient who was very unwell with underlying health conditions has passed away at Charing Cross Hospital."

Tony Chambers, interim chief executive of Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust said: "We can confirm that a patient, who was in her sixties, and who tested positive for COVID-19 has sadly died at Queen's hospital. She had been very unwell with significant other health conditions."

Both Trusts offered their condolences to the family of the deceased.

On a positive note, Costco’s remaining items were delivered today though the wipe rolls are restricted to two per order. Expecting weekly sainsburys order (reasonable substitute for the squashes and groceries but my usual multi vit gummie is substituted with softie fruit gums instead which I am going to return - panic buying effect, thankfully I am prepped and have some tablets anyway) This 4 fuckin 15 is not bothering me one bit as I am sure there is nothing great they will do.

NatoPMT · 12/03/2020 14:52

I live on the ground floor of a Victorian property. The tenant in the flat upstairs has just told me that her, her husband and their 2yo are self isolating with symptoms.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/03/2020 14:53

Have they included the patient who died in Nuneaton? Maybe that was yesterday?

pemberlyshades · 12/03/2020 14:53

Fuck @NatoPMT -are they being tested?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 12/03/2020 14:53

I don’t understand the science thing. If the U.K. government is acting in accordance with advice from scientists, and other countries are acting in accordance with the advice of scientists, I can only conclude the U.K. government is perhaps choosing to talk only to the 3% of scientists who don’t believe in man-made climate change.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 12/03/2020 14:54

Nato. I’m so sorry to hear that.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/03/2020 14:55

Excellent, did they stand well back when they told you this?

RhubarbTea · 12/03/2020 14:57

Ah fuck, @NatoPMT , I'm sorry. Do you have separate entrances to the flats or a shared one? I hope they don't turn out to have it.

Massive spike in numbers today. Come on UK gov, pull your finger out! Good on Ireland for closing schools...

tryingtoprep · 12/03/2020 14:59

I'm very uncomfortable with this "elderly and ill" narrative. I notice they're now adding in that those who've sadly died were "very unwell". Very unwell already? Or very unwell after getting Covid? So many people, elderly and/or younger with underlying conditions are doing just fine normally. Yes, they might need medication and sometimes medical care but generally they're still living normal lives. Not that it would be ok if it was someone already critically ill in hospital or bedbound in a nursing home, but the propaganda to the public is very much "don't worry, it's only those already at death's door". Hence continued widespread public denial and lack of proactive measures.

Theresa May was PM. She led (and continues to) a very active life. The current reporting would describe someone like her (over 60 with type 1 diabetes) as "elderly with underlying conditions". Yet most people wouldn't think of people like her as frail.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 12/03/2020 14:59

Saw something on the Guardian from an epidemiologist saying there could be merit in UK approach...confused

YoursTunbridgeWells · 12/03/2020 15:05

Preps - ordered ink and seeds thank you for advice. followed up online paracetamol ordered - should be in tomorrow.
Bad newsDS swimming gala has not been cancelled. I’m
Guessing 500 plus around a pool. Swim England thinks it’s safe. I despair. Will send email to organisers but they stand to lose several thousand

Sprayitall · 12/03/2020 15:05

@YoursTunbridgeWells No if you read that it looks like he is not backing up though it’s a misleading heading

michaelbaubles · 12/03/2020 15:05

I was talking about this "underlying health conditions" thing with my partner yesterday. Basically most of our parents/relatives would be described as "over 60 with existing health conditions" of one sort or another yet that doesn't mean they're sickly or at death's door! They're pretty hale and hearty, a lot of them are working, they're active and enjoying life. It's incredibly common for over-60s to have, say, high blood pressure. Doesn't mean they wouldn't otherwise be living another few decades ordinarily.

tryingtoprep · 12/03/2020 15:07

@YoursTunbridgeWells There's only one merit I can think of. Getting it over with now, as Boris apparently wants, might mean avoiding the scenario of fevers in a summer heatwave?

Sprayitall · 12/03/2020 15:08

DJ checked the business insurance and the clause of business interruption due to notifiable diseases is not there. What do we do? Any advice related to this welcome

Sprayitall · 12/03/2020 15:09

Dh not DJ .. (fat fingers problem..) lol

AlohaMolly · 12/03/2020 15:10

I’m 32 and could be described as having underlying health conditions. It’s a very obvious narrative isn’t it?

The first confirmed case of Covid in North Wales now, with five more suspected in Wrexham. If the government don’t announce a lockdown I’m insisting on no physical contact with my elderly in-laws anyway.

GinAndTonicNeeded · 12/03/2020 15:10

Just spotted a small fail in my prepping. I have lots of baking ingredients in... but I'm short of parchment and cupcake stuff. I m planning on using it for Maths, Getting the kids to write recipes, reviews, adverts etc and then enjoy eating the results. Silly and more of a nice to have but its making me panic about whether I've missed something important...

morningbell · 12/03/2020 15:12

The "getting it over with" approach is fatally flawed.

The disease looks serious enough given actual WHO figures from China (20% hospitalised)+ look what's happening in Italy.

Once the pictures start emerging from UK hospitals soon, there is no way the public will sit back and take it without mass unrest.

It needs to be delayed as much as possible, ecomomy put to one side for a bit, and work accelerated urgently on potential short term treatments to alleviate the upcoming situation.

As for me, I'm now taking the approach that the family bunkers down for a month, see the fallout, then at least there is probably some clarity in the direction of travel, for better or worse.
