Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

FuckThisWind, I was in a chemist on Friday and we were talking about stuff that people are panic buying. She said that they had sold out of sanitary pads, which they were not expecting. I suppose that actually makes sense. If you’re quarantined, you don’t want to run out of them. I’m thinking of getting period pants for my wee lass.

Checking in.

@cookiesareforeating

There was a gardening book suggestion on last thread which I think was this one :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Veg-One-Bed-Abundance-Raised/dp/0241376521/ref=mpssa111?keywords=How+to+grow+your+own+food&qid=1583699344&sr=8-1

I use this one for guidance, which is also a week by week guide:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Grow-Your-Food-Week-Week/dp/1905862113/ref=mpssa115?keywords=How+to+grow+your+own+food&qid=1583699376&sr=8-5

I have spent all weekend cleaning the house, especially the bathroom which has been disinfected to within an inch of its life! Going to have a bath in a moment and make use of the peaceful clean space whilst it lasts.

Emotionally I think I am adjusting quite well to all these changes and keep reminding myself I have done everything I can to keep myself and my family safe. I also have to remind myself I cannot control the outside world, just be kind and (relatively) calm. But I veer between outright terror & crying and feeling so calm... anyone else feeling like this?

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 20:36

@MoonlightMistletoe I personally don’t freeze rice. I freeze mostly ingredients though. I don’t think it’s unsafe but rice tastes good if it’s freshly made. Also I think defrosting and again heating the rice until it’s boiling hot will take much longer than pressure cooking it.

MoreCoffeeNeeded · 08/03/2020 20:38

For those looking for the dettol laundry liquid, you can get 4 x 1.5 L here amzn.to/2ItMgtU IT seems a bit pricey, but they are in stock and I am not sure how much they usually are? I have just ordered some anyway. Should arrive in a few days - keeps me out of the shops!

@cookiesareforeatingnotstoring I have this one which is fab. amzn.to/2TO1NKn We built a raised bed with their instructions and are using their methods for growing. Lovely crops so far and hav emore to plant tomorrow.

Looking at the numbers tonight I am so glad our school cancelled their trip to Europe next week!

For those asking about wills on previous thread. It's free will month:

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/03/2020 20:41

Thanks @Puppycorn I was going to mix and freeze however il just freeze the curry it makes more sense. The microwave meal rices seem to be hard so il stick to fresh, thanks again :)

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 20:44

@Effieray Thank you but it says it’s for people over 55+ I’m still trying and have found one near my town.. might call them morrow - dh thinks I’m mad and thinking extreme scenarios

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/03/2020 20:45

@VenetoResident are half of the infected people in hospital ? That to me doesn't seem mild it's scary!

BanKittenHeels · 08/03/2020 20:47

We are talking tonight about longer term preps. We are going to start buying a few Christmas presents and stashing those away. We don’t go overboard at Christmas but I’d like them each to have something to open.
With factories out of action for so long and this continuing for a considerable time, I expect non-essential things like toys and clothes might increase in price or not be available in the large volume they usually are. Clothes especially, if fabrics and other similar products are diverted for PPE.

VenetoResident · 08/03/2020 20:49

Moonlight....

Half of the diagnosed patients are.

But there will be many many more undiagnosed in the community. This skews the statistics.

pemberlyshades · 08/03/2020 20:50

Well, I've had a lovely day sorting out the veg plot. Planted more beans, peas and carrots. Got the tomatoes sown in the greenhouse and I'm now watching tv with some of my wine stock.
Prepping means I'm prepared!

Legoandloldolls · 08/03/2020 20:52

I used to work in medical diagnostics. Tests have to have such a high accuracy rate. We developed a pin prick prostate cancer pin prick blood test you could get in five minutes at the gp. It was 97% accurate so it was canned

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 08/03/2020 20:53

She said that they had sold out of sanitary pads, which they were not expecting.

I think I read on some of the earlier threads that some of the materials used to make sanitary towels are imported from China and there could be a disruption to supplies.

It was def Mumsnet I saw it being discussed but I couldn't tell you which thread.

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 20:54

@MoonlightMistletoe True. If you like making rice often you should try the instant pot. It’s amazing. Not sure if you know it already but I learnt this recently - you can also buy pasta shapes that look like rice called “orzo” that goes well with some curries and is quicker to make.

Snugglepumpkin · 08/03/2020 20:56

I have always liked John Harrisons gardening books & his website
which has a lot of helpful information on it (I get his monthly email newsletter too)

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/03/2020 21:00

@Puppycorn oh wow I've just googled Orzo, il definitely have a go with that it's nice trying something different, Thankyou! I haven't got an instant pot only a slow cooker which I rarely use. I use the microwave method mostly however still haven't mastered it

@VenetoResident ahh yes that makes sense.

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 21:06

@FuckThisWind thank you for the heads up, albeit obvious, I’ve nudged my friends with babies.

On sanpro, I’ve used the washable ones for about a year so I’m ok for that, but would really recommend them to others

@BanKittenHeels - the bbc said last week that there would be a Christmas toy shortage due to China shutting down factories

TiddleTaddleTat · 08/03/2020 21:06

Posharmchairs · 08/03/2020 21:12

For anyone concerned about nappies and or san pro. I use reusables.
Highly recommend the nora range from the brand “bloom and nora”. Nappy wise “close pop in birth to potty” nappies are very very good.

So long as you have a good wash routine, 60 degrees (killing harmful bacteria) with a cold pre wash for stains and extra rinse at the end of the wash for detergent residue.... you’re good to go!

Reusable wipes also great and I make up a fresh batch every two days with a few drops of lavender oil and freshly boiled water, keeps in a tuppaware.

Had a bit of a mishap with frozen eggs, can’t get them out the bloody ice cube tray 🤦‍♀️

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 21:16

@MoonlightMistletoe I have normal stove top pressure cooker which I use almost daily (almost all indian households will have one I think) and this instant pot is ideal if I have to make biryanis or set the timer on if I have to go away or work. there are some amazing Orzo curry and salad recipes out there.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 08/03/2020 21:16

I’m sorry, but that did make me laugh. 😆

Checking in.

Interesting to read in the local news that the Welsh Govt should be getting powers to set their own rules RE quarantine and school closures. I'll be interested to see how it differs from England, if at all. Sorry if this has already been posted, not been able to keep up this weekend.

Posharmchairs · 08/03/2020 21:21

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily

I’m glad to offer a moment of humour. I’ll have to defrost them tonight and make the small pancakes tomorrow.

I picked up some silicone trays to try again with another box of eggs.

Onmyown1 · 08/03/2020 21:26

Thank you to the person who said to look in office suppliers for hand sanitiser. I’ve been struggling to get any and due to being in a high risk group needed some. After searching for a while I now have some ordered to be delivered Tuesday.
