Thread 12!

I can't seem to carry over the clicky links in the OP of the last thread. Can anyone else?

@NatoPMT @Somerville yes, the figures seem far worse than other estimates of 20% needing hospital care.

This is actually the first post that has made it really hit home how fucked we are if the spread continues at this pace and the percentages requiring hospital care are accurate. Current mortality rate in Italy is 5% based on those figures.

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily the masks? We bought
these back in January, they arrived not that long ago.

The disposable ones were from toolstation, FFP3, we use them for our home renovation project.

@Puppycorn & @MissusMaker - I'm in Bucks too. I'm hoping to get an update tomorrow on the cases as I work at one of the council offices.

I'm happy to let you know what I find out (might be able to find out what is happening with schools.. )

Checking in. Glad this has moved back to preppers. The vitriol from the 'shut up, it's just the flu' gang is weird. Why so much anger I wonder, fear perhaps. Does anyone else keep getting a twitch to buy more? I'm resisting it so far but a small part of my brain is saying 'well you never know, it might get worse and you'd wish you'd bought more'

Thanks @lachy I'd appreciate it. Always good to know more. I don't envy you at the council offices, a tough financial time for local councils at the moment anyway and when the SHTF with this it will only get worse.

Does anyone else keep getting a twitch to buy more?

Yes. 😳
I think the fact that some of the supermarket chains have started limiting how much of certain products you can buy, has made me a bit twitchy. I need to check my larder tomorrow and see if I’ve accidentally ran some things down.

DH is in trouble, he's lost one of the hand sanitizer I gave him. Reckons he put it in his pocketConfused

Case three miles down from us. Gold cup festival in county this week and already lots if people here, Irish and came across a German family earlier. Dread to think what it'll be like in the county in three weeks time.

@FuckThisWind Yes, ten kgs work cheaper if it’s the same rice they are consuming everyday. At my household we use atleast 5 to 7 different rice varieties for various Rice based dishes. I do fresh cooking once a day and if my mum is here it’s three times a day 😂 she will go mad seeing me batch cooking and freezing (never approves of it) Yes it’s lovely to learn from all of you here. Also it’s not like we are way more prepared sometimes it’s mostly adaptation, glass half full and thankful scenarios. made a small batch of raw mango chutney today as it’s mango season back home. (I have a friend who loves them and uses it to make cheese sandwiches - I had no idea it can be used this way until she taught me so and I should say it’s amazing).. Mum thinks soups, sandwiches and pizza are snacks 😀 never approves it as a meal 🤣

Thanks for the new thread. I’m avoiding most others, and sticking with you guys!

Again a huge thank you for the messages and pms sending support after Friday’s cancer news. Head still in a whirl of uncertainty about the path forward. Practical prep jobs help keep me grounded.

We were always going to turn front lawn into edible kitchen garden starting this year. Seems even more of a good idea now.

Can anyone suggest a good book/ blog for newbie veg gardening?

We’ve always done potted tomatoes, strawberries, salad leaves etc but we planned to ramp it up. There are potatoes chitting on windowsill but that’s as far as I’ve got.

Today’s UK numbers don’t surprise me, Italy scares me.

Can I suggest that if you have far flung family and friends who you communicate with via one method such as WhatsApp that you add each other elsewhere just incase there is a communication blip in this important time?

We usually use WhatsApp but today have all added each other on Facebook and Twitter and have all downloaded Skype.

I think I’d find it very hard if one went down and I was unable to contact a relative or friend who was potentially sick or in a hot zone.

Have discussed with colleagues at work and staff in Aldi. The next things to go out of stock will definitely be nappies, formula, baby food and baby wipes. Most people are a bit behind this thread usually. Get paracetamol if you can.

Thanks for the new thread and hello all,

Every time a new threads made I wonder how many more there are going to be, another day, another thread another load of cases :(

I've made a chicken veg curry and rice and have enough over to freeze for the children's "emergency" lunch however what's the rules on rice, can I freeze it or would that be dangerous?

lachy · 08/03/2020 20:20

@MissusMaker - it is definitely challenging at the moment - everything is "the council's fault" so I've developed a thick skin.

I wouldn't hold your breath for sanitiser showing as in stock. I ordered some Purell from Staples a week ago because the Bioguard I'd ordered from Amazon last month still hasn't been dispatched. Both are still processing.

Is Hibiscrub a good alternative?

@lachy Thank you. That’s so kind of you. Please let us know.
@TipseyTorvey Yes.. what’s with that! They can’t even understand the difference between prepping and panic buying.. can’t believe there are people who don’t even think about stock rotation. I’m twitching to buy a little more too but being a lowkey prepper always - I have booked my usual grocery delivery for Friday so adding the usual stuffs plus may be 1 or 2 extra

Oh and my freezer spring clean brought home to me how much of a prepper I've always been in all but name! I did do some for Brexit but only prepped properly in January.

Hoping some of the more ancient chicken and fish in my freezer will still be ok Blush

I definitely have the twitch but I’m also frantically trying to stick to a budget, with 20 no spend days in March. I’ve got a two night mini break booked with DS for Mother’s Day, only an hour away, but it’s our little tradition and I’m loathe to cancel it. I also need to budget about £150 for it though!

@CookiesAreForEatingNotStoring The e-book which was recommended yesterday is very good I should say “Veg in one bed” by Huw Richards. Yes I am thinking to pot some veggies too and prepping for it. Haven’t started yet. I planned to visit garden centre today then I started reading the book which gave me few ideas so thought I will make a list before I hit the garden centre.

I adjusted the numbers so they're all in the same order.

But although numbers in hospital are high, there must be many many more people with mild symptoms.

DS2, DH and I have all had classic CV symptoms and not been tested. A really strange illness unlike anything we've known before. The painful chest and cough with no upper respiratory symptoms (runny nose, bunged up nose, red throat..)

Same for almost all the adults I know. Only my DS2 and a friends DD have been tested - those least likely to get a positive result.

You only really get tested if you're in hospital. Advice otherwise is stay at home and cope.
