Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

@SingingBabooshkaBadly I know its disgusting. I tweeted yesterday that I hope at the least people are prosecuted for profiteering, or even better just shoot them to save on resources Grin

middleager · 07/03/2020 08:23

Destinys I'd like to show that thread to the doubters and scoffers.

Cherrypi · 07/03/2020 08:42

Making sure you have your digital password for your library might be good prepping as I'm sure they'll shut with the schools. Then you will have access to ebooks and audiobooks.

middleager · 07/03/2020 08:48

My average sized freezer is bursting. but it does contain a bulky loaf.

I bought some crumpets as I figured they'd take up less space. I froze some dough as well.

I have lots of bread mix, so I only have a loaf in freeze just in case I couldn't bake, either through illness or utilities.

Seasoned preppers, should I free up the loaf space for other stuff? Somebody mentioned it upthread - is freezing bread a common no no for prepping?

Puppycorn · 07/03/2020 08:49

@HasaDigaEebowai True. Also that MK case was put in a public ward for hours it seems until others complained of incessant cough and to test him, for which they were told to mind their business and kept him until the tests came back positive. Apparently there were lot of visitors for him as well as for others too. Now all the persons have to be contact traced to be advised for self isolation and all the healthcare workers attended the ward have gone into self isolation too. What a precious waste of resources that too when times are this tough and we might need their skills. This is why I think it’s important to isolate anyone with symptoms than to wait until the test results.

tangled2 · 07/03/2020 08:50

I've frozen a couple of loads, and some wraps. I split the slices up though so can slot them in spare places. My 1yo loves bread so want to make sure we have some for her. If you'd miss it and don't want to use bread mix (I haven't looked into that yet really) and you've got enough nutrient dense foods I don't see the harm.

tangled2 · 07/03/2020 08:50

Loafs not loads!

Highlandyak · 07/03/2020 08:52

I freeze bread but have 3 freezers so never worried about space! But if you're wanting a bread product that won't take up much room, you can freeze wraps and they're flat so don't take up lots of room and you can lie stuff on top of them.

Puppycorn · 07/03/2020 08:52

@middleager I would suggest you replace the loaf with something nutritious if there is no freezer space.

middleager · 07/03/2020 08:58

Thanks.
The wraps are a great idea.

I would like to replace the loaf with something more nutritious and if I release that space I can cram so much more in.

There were some great tips about making sauces (ratatouille for example) thicker so they can be bulked out with tinned tomatoes later.

Blueberryham · 07/03/2020 09:04

Thank you to all on this thread. I am feeling quite panicky now and wondering if I have enough. But so much more prepared than I would have been if I hadn’t followed this thread.

bellinisurge · 07/03/2020 09:06

It's nice not to need to go to the shops. Having a nice chilled out day with DH. Walk in the park, gin in the afternoon later. Dd is chilling with grandparents on a sleepover.
Encourage everyone who's pretty much prepped to do the same.

KundaliniRising · 07/03/2020 09:14

@Coughsyrupsucks thank you for posting the link to the map, very handy to know where cases are occuring 👍

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 09:21

interested to read that shops are selling out of loo roll etc and people are scoffing in quite an unpleasant way at the stupid preppers

Yes, my buying lots of loo roll since 2017 really impacts the current lack of stocks. Bad prepper, naughty prepper.

Today my plans are to split up my sourdough starter, plant some veg and dig up another bed.

I was febrile last night but woke up feeling fine with a nice 36.5c temp. More likely to have been my chronic condition which elevates my temp for a laugh weekly.
DH was tempted to bring home some swabs to swab us all but sadly the man has ethics and wouldn’t steal from work and thus his patients. I’d want a PCT too anyway. Fussy.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/03/2020 09:23

Not been to the shops since Tuesday, ok apart from the cornershop. Trying to go on quieter days.

hankyspanky · 07/03/2020 09:23

Not sure if this is the right thread but does anyone have any knowledge of growing things from seeds? I was thinking last night of the long term impact and just how ill prepared I really am.

The most I've ever grown is a few tomatoes from plants. I looked at a pack of seeds and the instructions seemed really complicated! Is there a 'Growing food from scratch' thread or guide anywhere?

KundaliniRising · 07/03/2020 09:25

For dry hands from washing lots E45 cream is brilliant and a big pot can normally found in chemists and supermarkets. Failing that a tiny drop of olive oil works well, may be worth decanting into a manageable bottle.

KundaliniRising · 07/03/2020 09:27

@hankyspanky perpetual spinach is a good one to grow, it can be grown in an indoor window planter. Herbs too, for instance corriander and basil.

Puppycorn · 07/03/2020 09:36

@hankyspanky yes I am on the same boat as you and was asking yesterday to find out where to source affordable tall planters. Costco has a Vegtrug for £140 but wanted to see if someone else can offer advice about where to buy them. Googled but it didn’t help much. I just have few pots but I don’t think it will do the job. I’m planning a visit to the garden centre today.

NutellaQuest · 07/03/2020 09:36

Oh my, that twitter thread makes for sobering reading. I wonder how the equivalent numbers pan out in the UK.

I just checked Ocado. My deliveries in my area till Thursday!!! Just need Olive oil, so should be fine!!!

MoonlightMistletoe · 07/03/2020 09:43

BBC news, didn't have the recovered numbers for the UK only globally. I'm guessing not many have recovered just yet.

Also it's ok to go to football matches for example because it's outdoors. However I know there's limited access to handwashing facilities so I hope people take a little bottle of sanitizer, and when anyone scores a goal they don't all spit everywhere while cheering.

preponderings · 07/03/2020 09:45

Went to the shop this morning. It was surprisingly empty, the lower level car park no way near half full and a handful of cars on the top level. Shop was fully stocked, masses of toilet paper (on offer) no empty shelves. Only thing they didn't have was hand gel. Car park wasn't noticeably fuller when I left.

Shock Austrian customs authorities have secured 21,000 smuggled face masks during the inspection of a coach. As the Austrian Ministry of Finance announced on Saturday, the customs officers stopped the onward journey of the four drivers and three passengers who wanted to go from Turkey to Germany. Due to the current high demand for the Coronavirus Sars-CoV-2, the Ministry of Finance estimates that the smugglers could have achieved “at least EUR 50,000 profit” with the non-certified protective masks.
YoursTunbridgeWells · 07/03/2020 09:46

Saturday morning thoughts:

I like this thread a lot. I can't keep up with the AIBU to be worried about CV threads as they move too fast for me.

Facebook is full of people complaining about shortages yet there are still shops locally with supplies bar handgel.

When will the panic buying calm down? I thought this week and next will be very bad - start of th emonth people tend to have money in their pockets and it's now prevalent in people's thoughts with the fats moving pace. Surely there must be a point where people have done their panic shop and things level out.

Is it even possible for rationing to be introduced? I think we might need it. I am genuinely concerned those in poverty may starve due to notbeing able to access the cheap foods that are normally available. (Expensive stuff always last to sell out.)

According to the BBC the average age of those who died in Italy is 81. I would have predicted late 60s. It's very very sad all the same.

EnidBlyton · 07/03/2020 09:48

the delivery driver has gone off sick for my depleted delivery!
i have to go and collect it myself

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/03/2020 09:49

Well that isn't quite true. Large outdoor gatherings are slightly less risky than large indoor gatherings. But they're not ok.
