Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

One analyst said the supermarkets had likened the frenzy to Christmas.

Christmas panic buying goes on for weeks though, yet those damn Celebrations plastic tubs just keep on stocking....

MoonlightMistletoe · 07/03/2020 10:18

@HasaDigaEebowai Personally I wouldn't go, do you think they should still go ahead? I mean what I wrote there was what the woman on bbc news was saying , that there's no need to not go, unless I heard differently ?

burntpinky · 07/03/2020 10:29

Managed to get 4 hand gels this morning. Hopefully enough. We have loads of big bottles at work so these are just for home. But will grab a couple each time I shop where available.

Our freezer is now bursting and can’t take any more. Other cupboards stuffed full of cleaning supplies, dried/tinned good, loo roll, kitchen roll etc.

I think we will now just shop normally and try not to touch the prep supplies.

My elderly parents are due to visit in 2 weeks which involves a flight. I’m going to see how next week pans out but might suggest they don’t come. They will be gutted not to see their grandson but my dad is not well and my mum is not in best of health and I’m 5 weeks pregnant so lots of risks everywhere

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 07/03/2020 10:34

Is anyone else taking the opportunity to tidy AKA buy lots of lovely new storage tubs and possibly a label maker Blush and sort out their kitchen at this time? I am just looking at some lovely flour tins with teeny scoops.

Also just had a thought about isolating within the home/family, I don't sleep alone at the moment as my epilepsy (waking tonic clonic seizures) isn't controlled. When I stayed in hospital I wasn't allowed to close the cubicle curtains at night (you can imagine how pleasant that is Hmm) There must be people in similar situations.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 07/03/2020 10:35

And I can't close the bathroom door to have a bath either. I can see this wouldn't work!

TipseyTorvey · 07/03/2020 10:36

I've just booked my usual Friday delivery slot really far in advance and I'm just topping up lightly now, it's been an expensive few weeks shopping wise so I need to reign it in now. Was discussing with DH last night that this must really be impacting retail (apart from food) because, anecdotally, I'm far too worried about feeding us or having medicine than new shoes and I imagine many are the same.

lexloofah · 07/03/2020 10:38

Just back from the garden centre, usually heaving on a sunny Sat morning but v quiet indeed, hope that means some older folk are taking precautions over being out in busy places

It was time I got planting anyway but this has spurred me on, got more gro sacks and some lettuce, tomato and strawberry plug plants - think I am going to use our hanging baskets for edibles rather than or as well as flowers this year

burntpinky · 07/03/2020 10:39

@TipseyTorvey that’s a very good point. I need some new maternity stuff but we’ve just spent over £200 in WR, Boots and M&S plus another £175 earlier this week in WR and Tesco. So am waiting until pay day to purchase the clothes.

I’m not quite sure how we’ve managed to spend so much.

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/03/2020 10:40

@moonlightmistletoe No I definitely wouldn't go. But government advice doesn't say not to at the moment.

DS1 is on a school trip in London at the moment. As soon as he gets back that's it, all extra curricular stuff is stopped in this house. We can quite happily have a few weeks with nothing but essential activity. I can't see how schools will be open much longer anyway and when they close schools they'll also stop other large gatherings.

Effieray · 07/03/2020 10:47

Just been browsing through some of the other Mumsnet threads on Coronavirus. Blimey I am not on any other form of social media and only joined Mumsnet to participate in this one thread, so I may be naive but how people treat each other on other threads is atrocious! I am shocked. I know there is a lot of fear at the moment but blimey!

So just wanted to say thank you everyone for such a calm and supportive thread.

I felt a little guilty yesterday that we have toilet rolls when some supermarkets are empty, but reminded myself that:
a) I brought them bit by bit weeks ago, not in a panic.
b) Prepping is being "proactive not reactive" (Thank you Dr John. I love him. He's like a grandad/ doctor/ teacher/ all rolled into one.)
c) I have enough to share supplies with folks who need them.

@ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu Thinking of you at work today 🌹

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 07/03/2020 10:56

Definitely. I'm buying very little other than preps, and that's just replenishing what we use and stocking the freezer now.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 11:15

Marshall’s are great if you want to order gardening stuff online. Their potato grow bags are very good for small spaces. Their website is very comprehensive and they’ll send out a really useful brochure.
They have lots of advice on their website.

I’d recommend getting some bamboo canes, extra compost and saving all pots and egg boxes.
B&M is a good place for gardening stuff, our local one has a garden centre at the back and has the best price I’ve found locally for pots, soil and frost covers. You could spend £35 in B&M and be set for small space gardening.

GalOopNorth · 07/03/2020 11:22

We have decided to take our DC out of school from Monday and withdraw from social contact because of my health conditions. I had to go out this am so popped in to (v quiet) supermarket for some bits and pieces and got a sack of spuds from a ‘side of the road’ place.

The cashier was very eye rolly to the one next door at my purchases - 4 packs toothbrushes and toothpaste, 4 more bar soap, and Easter eggs for the DCs.

There was plenty of loo roll but I didn’t buy any Wink

Coronavirus 'like both SARS and AIDS' and causes irreversible lung damage

MoonlightMistletoe · 07/03/2020 11:28

@HasaDigaEebowai I bet you cannot wait for your son to be back home. I think that's very wise.

savethecat · 07/03/2020 11:33

@Effieray not sure if you know Dr John is a Nurse with a PhD, not a medical Doc

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 11:33

Just had an Amazon delivery of some grass seed and the guy was wearing gloves and stood well back from the door and passed me the parcel with an outstretched arm.
Good for him.

fuckitywhy · 07/03/2020 11:35

Are there any verified accounts of people who've recovered from it? Are they all having lung issues, or all back to normal, do we know?

MoonlightMistletoe · 07/03/2020 11:40

This is all I can find however it doesn't seem to be updated.

I went to aldi with my younger sister at 8.30ish. It was full and obvious lots of people were stocking up with huge gaps in places. One guy was just chucking lots of cans into his basket.

It was nice to just get what we needed and not have that fear.

burntpinky · 07/03/2020 11:43

Luckily my DH has been making home grown compost for last 2 years

sideorderofchips · 07/03/2020 11:47

Went to town and got my calpol, glycerol and some pocket tissues. Woman in boots side eyed me but nothing more

Went to the charity warehouse and got some board games, puzzles and books

MoreCoffeeNeeded · 07/03/2020 11:50

Can we talk gardening? As in, lets all say what we plant when?

DH built us a veg patch and I have a book that is 12 months of veg in one plot type thing so am going to have a potter today and check the book to see if anything needs starting. It might be more of a gardening section topic, but i do see growing food as a prepper concern too. So feel free to tell me to bog off.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 07/03/2020 11:52

Normally I put small amounts of money in into different funds like holiday, Christmas etc.
All household funds have been diverted to this. We never have for instance a full tank of petrol. So now we have and will keep it topped up. Money going to extra food, specials like manuka honey.

Effi
This is a lovely thread with more supportive comments.

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 11:53

No it's a good idea morecoffee
I think lots of us are going to be growing food this year.
