Banknotes
Banknotes can carry the coronavirus. But try not to be too alarmed: the risk is small. “Unless someone is using a bank note to sneeze in,” Tait-Burkard says. Don’t worry too much about loose change. “Coins are actually very bad environments for viruses to survive,” she says.
Door handles
Touching these is often unavoidable, and a lot of different people may do so, so be mindful of where you are touching the handle and wash your hands frequently to combat this.
Office kitchens
Coffee machines or kettles will be handled by multiple people, so it’s a good idea to use hand sanitiser after doing the tea round.
ATMs or ticket machines
“If you’re withdrawing money from a machine, that’s also something that’s going to be touched by many people,” says Haas. Ditto ticket machines.
Handrails
Escalators, tube handrails, banisters – all will be touched constantly, potentially by thousands of people a day. “If you’re on public transport, there’s no way not to touch the handrails,” says Tait-Burkard. “So when you get off, disinfect your hands.”
Communal bathroom surfaces
“People often blow their noses in the bathroom,” Tait-Burkard observes.
Hospital surfaces
“Shaking hands is a frequent transmission route for disease in hospitals,” says Haas. “It’s why health personnel are supposed to regularly disinfect their hands.” If you are visiting someone in hospital, or have an appointment, wash your hands thoroughly before and after visiting.
Telephones
Less of a problem in the age of smartphones, but if you share an office phone, it is something to consider.
Airplane seats
“International travel is a risk factor for transmission,” says Tait-Burkard. So make like Naomi Campbell, and wipe down your seat pre-takeoff.
Anything in a GP surgery
“The public health advice is that you should call NHS 111, rather than go to your GP, if you fear you have coronavirus,” says Tait-Burkard. “But there will be some people who go to the GP, despite the advice. So there is a higher risk.” She points out that all GP surgeries usually provide free hand disinfectant – so take advantage of what is on offer, and apply it liberally.

I love that Effie
I would like something like that for my son as he doesn't have lung disease, but no immune system.
It's so true. The focus is on the people who will get this mildly.

I'm just reading the that the UK Govt hasn't (yet) made CV a notifiable disease which has huge implications.

Basically if a business has to close down due to a case on site they can claim for the loss of income under their insurance policy only if it is a notifiable disease

People asking about updates, have you seen this Seattle student's live map? It is very comprehensive but also lists recoveries. ncov2019.live/map

Puppycorn · 04/03/2020 07:35

Can I ask what hand gel have you all got please? I have two small bottles of boots antiviral hand foam (50ml ones) and some ordinary hand wash liquids but now thinking I should have got the foam more as I am using the same for dd too before she goes to school also dh needs to go to London this week (I’m dreading that) also Does any of your dh that travels to London wears a mask? Dh wants to wear one so it will make him more aware of not touching surfaces and his face but doesn’t want to be ridiculed (or taken pics by others- this is happening more in MK station, people taking pics of others wearing masks and posting them to fb media pages)

AvocadoOwl · 04/03/2020 07:38

Very sad about the doctor. That article says that China are repatriating citizens from affected countries like Iran too.

'' wise pay '' systems in schools and colleges.

Students using their finger to pay is a hot spot and then they eat straight after

Springinsight · 04/03/2020 07:53

Wheres my mojo, that's interesting Shock

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/03/2020 08:00

Puppy- I think it would be very sensible for your dh to wear a mask to prevent surface-face touching. Some people may think it's OTT however I think many people here would agree that it's the sensible thing to do especially if travelling on tubes and trains. I would!

It seems we have to look after ourselves with this.

I keep getting people commenting to me that people die of XYZ everyday. Does this make anyone else feel like their head is going to explode? It's not the point is it!

historyismything · 04/03/2020 08:01

Hi de-lurking!

How likely would it be that we wouldn't be told about a case?
I need to be vague but I'm certain there is some near me only no one is saying anything and I've not seen my location on any news.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 08:06

At this point history it's very unlikely.
When we start getting community spread and we move to the mitigation stage, we won't get told as it will be everywhere.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 04/03/2020 08:14

@Effieray This is a really important message that's just being lost, by the I'm alright Jack brigade.

Every single one of the lives lost, was someone's child. Currently that's 3,203 families in mourning for a child, a parent, grandparent, a brother or sister etc.

Someone posted something on the AIBU thread from a doctor yesterday saying "expect people to die".

The world will not be the same after this. Not just the social, economic scars but there will be the gaps left by much missed people.

I worry for the most vulernable. They need a voice.

I think that we will naturally be so focussed on our families that we'll forget about others. We won't give to food banks, we won't check on an elderly neighbour or someone living on our own.

Tinnednut · 04/03/2020 08:29

I agree for one thing many retired grandparents are involved in childcare now a days. As well as freely giving their time to many community and charity jobs. All roles that will now leave them vulnerable.
I despise the it's 'only sick and elderly ' that die Oh well that alright then!
I for one love and admire many people over 60 and have a couple of young people in my family with serious health problems.

Legoandloldolls · 04/03/2020 08:35

As a general prep item, anyone over a certain age should have a small pack of dispersable Asprin in the house. For heart attack symptoms. Read up but basically phone 999 / 111 and pop one under tongue while you wait for ambulance. But do read the label!

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 08:36

Effieray · 04/03/2020 08:41

@ofwarren

This outbreak has really made me think about people who have conditions like your son. It amazes me how in "everyday life" we're not aware of protecting other people through our own actions.

@YoursTunbridgeWells
Yeah, all the people who have died are faceless and voiceless too aren't they? Sad

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/03/2020 08:46

More people die of cancer in a day..than have died of this so far. I think I would be more worried if it was the height of summer and flu was spreading like wildfire! But we are in flu season. As long as we keep an eye on the really young/old and anyone with immune deficiencies, the rest of us will be fine.

@Effieray that was said to me today. It makes me sick that last comment "the rest of us will be fine" people are so selfish.
