Re: the egg situation. You can preserve fresh eggs for up to one year by coating them with mineral oil.

After recent chat on here about lack of survivor accounts, here’s one from Singapore: www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-asia-51714162/how-i-recovered-from-coronavirus-and-isolation

There’s a ‘diary’ of an early, recovered 25 year old Brit in Wuhan in the Mail too. It’s quite light on detail or personality but it does the job.

AmelieTaylor · 04/03/2020 23:58

Blimey. I might have to tie all of your hands behind your backs

🤣

I need 48 hours in a day please!

Effieray · 05/03/2020 00:05

@beedance

I saw the signs of this happening back in January... I have been a Prepper for 25+ years. I read survival books to relax!

And yet this still feels surreal. Like a pandemic film come to life.

But I am now focusing on two things:

  1. My mental health. We all need to adjust to this new reality ASAP so we can deal with it. Prepping is a way of doing that. I am taking breaks from news reports, social media etc. Watching (unrelated) films & books.
  2. Financial health. Saving money, living simply.

But it is - and will be - an ongoing adjustment period so sending you love Thanks

May I ask if the person you spoke to on advice line gave you a case number or something like that to give to your school? I'm just wondering how schools/local councils know people have actually been given the advice to let their children stay at home and not fine the parents?

Effieray · 05/03/2020 00:10

From Twitter:

Emphasis right now is on limiting access to Parliament, but full suspension is possible.

MPs rise on March 31 and sitting would be suspended until September in “the longest summer recess we have known”, according to one senior parliamentary source.

If MPs are suspending Parliament, I am taking my DC out of school.

Legoandloldolls · 05/03/2020 00:40

These gummies have zinc. They smell so bad but taste ok. 3 4 2 in boots. I'm not sure if they are helping with cold or not. But you can suck them at least

Wow if that's true about parliament, Bo Jo does love time off.

I'm still worried about gcses.

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 05/03/2020 01:03

I've just seen on sky news that FlyBe is expected to go under in the next few hours, looks like they've been unable to secure a loan due to the drop in bookings because of Covid19 and about 2,000 people could be out of a job.

I wonder how many members of those staff worrying about losing their income in the last few weeks have been told to get a grip, it's just a flu and to get a grip by people who don't understand what the fuss is about.

Yes mental health is key now ( shec says reading this at 1am)

To the person when is best to go shopping I think the 6am option is best as any air born germs will have fallen out the air by then, shelves restocked etc. I'm a night person so I went last at 9.30. Shops where a bit bare at that time.

DestiniesDaughter - I have on rare occasions flushed a public loo using my foot. Not sure I can still manage it? adds yoga DVD to ever increasing list

I hugged a friend tonight. If I'm getting this virus at least I did it giving comfort to someone who needed it. The group seemed to think kicking someone in the shin was the new handshake?

So I will leave you all with a kick in the shins to show solidarity. I'm going to try to avoid the news until the evening.

Think of the millions in China who haven't caught this. This too shall pass.

alexdgr8 · 05/03/2020 03:30

i always used to try to flush the non-home loo with my foot.
gets a bit difficult now, esp the ones with a hanging chain above my head.
but seriously, all my family of origin were like this re not-our-own loo; never sit on, ie touch, a public lavatory seat, nor touch directly taps, doors, handles. always take in a paper napkin from cafes, to shield hands. we were brought up with this as normal practice.
and always wash hands on re-entering house, after using loo, or blowing nose, before food, eating or preparing it.
in the old days there used to be signs on the doors in public lavatory cubicles, on the back of the door, so you could only see them when you shut the door, presumably so you could note the details in private, if need be.

they warned about venereal disease, and where to go for medical help. so many people reasonably assumed that one could catch it by using public loos. they didnt quite know what it was.
bet that all seems incredible to you now. but its true.

Beedance · 05/03/2020 03:34

@Effieray

Thank you. The person on the PHE phone took our location and gave me their name and office location and said to note the time of the call all of which means the recorded call is identifiable. The person on the education line took my phone number.

I hope the head teacher will believe me. I think I’ll probably say that it all seems very unreal but I think I should follow the advice.

LemonDropChilli · 05/03/2020 03:49

@itsnotjustflu wise old piglet Smile

Neome · 05/03/2020 04:22

I hope it’s ok to post this link to the emotional prep thread

preponderings · 05/03/2020 05:37

NatoPMT. I’m really struggling with the face touching too

Turns out my hair tickles my face non stop

This!!!!!

Nearly 100 cases in Switzerland. Pretty spread out, including army. New guidelines issued to keep your distance e.g. in queues. Gatherings over 1000 people forbidden and between 150-1000 need to complete a risk assessment. Under 150 and your asked to behave responsibly. Not talking of closing schools as they acknowledge a lot of children would be cared for by grandparents who are an at risk category.

We've spoken to the DC, told them it's a virus a bit like the flu (I know, I know! But one had the flu not all that long ago so it's a point of reference for them) but worse and we need to be extra careful with hand washing and coughing etc That we can't meet Granny for a while as it's too dangerous for her to travel right now. And warned Easter might not happen
They go through the 6 rules every day at school and have the official government posters up in classrooms, bathroom s and front door.

GorkyMcPorky · 05/03/2020 06:08

So there is potential for parliament to be closed from Easter until September, but the rest of us can take our chances? Am I misunderstanding? Read it on Sky as well.

Puppycorn · 05/03/2020 06:23

@Effieray what is TP or TCP? sorry I’m really bad with abbreviations

@Beedance I really hope dd’s primary school sends an email with the number soon. They have this reading morning today for book day. I
might as well ask them. It’s seriously stressful.

GorkyMcPorky · 05/03/2020 06:30

TP toilet paper.

preponderings · 05/03/2020 06:43

Shocking, isn't it. Not unexpected though Angry

I can't post pictures but this is a good twitter thread on the efficacy of hand sanitisers.

Puppycorn · 05/03/2020 06:52

@GorkyMcPorky Lol for TP.. 😀 The parliament closed until sep? - That’s not right isn’t it. Sad

Another good read

Let's talk about school closures re COVID-19. It's a tough topic, scientifically and pragmatically. It's hard to estimate the benefits precisely. And closing schools can have costs, such as health care workers having to stay home, kids missing subsidized lunches, etc.

Yet studies show that school closures are one of the most beneficial 'non-pharmaceutical interventions' (NPI) that can be employed, more effective even than reactive quarantines or banning of public gatherings. Partly, the reason is that parents also stay home as a result.

BridgeToTerabithia · 05/03/2020 07:02

It does mean no PMQs though...

NewYearNewTwatName · 05/03/2020 07:06

This is TCP

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP_(antiseptic)

I have always had a bottle in my cupboard only because it was always in my parents first aid cupboard, but I've never really used it.

Gargling TCP is something people use to do if they we had a soar throat.

NotJustACigar · 05/03/2020 07:08

A few limited superdrug hand sanitizers are going back in stock briefly before settling it. At the moment it's the small sized sensitive own brand formula at 62% ethanol. Yesterday it was the strawberry raspberry but that sold out again quickly. You can only buy two bottles.

NotJustACigar · 05/03/2020 07:09

Settling it = selling out
