Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

I have been reading about 20+ newspaper articles a day. I wanted to come on here to discuss something disturbing 'I'd read but now I can't find it again to quote the source. It wasn't Nicola Sturgeon but one of her cabinet has said that Scotland will carry on as normal. Her basic jist was If some people die they die and if some people get poorly then so be it and they are going to carry on as normal. Really? I hope she doesn't get the deciding say in that because to have a country with different approaches would be counter productive and could cause huge unrest. Let's hope this Cobra meeting puts her in her place!!

I understand the comment about one child difficult to conceive. It is not that easily conceived children are less valuable or less loved, more the parents have gone through a tough emotional time conceiving which can make you more worried. I am more worried about dd than ds as she is more vulnerable, even though she takes hygiene more seriously.

Ds has been typical teen with I am not going to wash hands... You are over- reacting, you are ....

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 02/03/2020 11:41

I’ve struggled to keep up with these excellent threads so please forgive me if I’m repeating stuff that’s already been discussed, but I’ve been thinking about how all sorts of services could be disrupted if large numbers of people were unwell at the same time and what might be useful to have in if you couldn’t get professional help.

I purchased the following pre Brexit due to similar concerns:

Fire extinguisher and fire blanket for the kitchen (those more sensible than I am probably just consider these to be something you should have anyway of course...) They wouldn’t cope with anything major but may prevent a small incident turning into a major one.

Mouse and rat traps - I’m thinking refuse collections may well be disrupted and if a problem developed as a result it may be harder to get pest control experts out.

Temporary tooth filling kit - I read a PP’s concerns about trapping bacteria and share them tbh but thought I’d rather have one in the cupboard than not.

Bathroom/kitchen sink unblocker chemicals and a couple of those drain snake things.

Any other suggestions for ‘in an expert’s not available’ gratefully received 🙂

I'm not normally one for jarred sauce but I got a few in case I'm too sick to cook anything else.

How are everyone's supermarkets stocked? I was in Lidl this morning and there was absolutely no pasta, no bleach, no cream crackers, no chick peas and hardly any beans. Everything else was well stocked.

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 02/03/2020 11:43

I home-ed my 4 and organise several different sporting groups locally. I announced on the private group yesterday that I’m suspending sessions for a few weeks due to myself and hubby being high risk, just so we can see more clearly where this situation is heading, and rather than the ‘permanently has finally lost the plot’ 🤣 response I expected to get, other parents are saying they’re going to stay home too and focus on the 3Rs for a change rather than all the sports and socialising we normally do. So I may not end up a laughing stock after all! The kids are currently immersed in a board game together, we’re going to watch a documentary over lunch, then maybe a cycle ride round the black followed by a few minutes of maths...we’re rather lax on the academic side of things 🥴 I can heartily recommend Conquer Maths online program to anyone who decides to deregister though, and Education Otherwise website/Facebook group has all the legal stuff explained very simply.

PAINTWORK

Antibac bubbles your paintwork so be careful. Use soap and water or detergent. Recommended on R4 last week.

WelliAmNot · 02/03/2020 11:44

Our local big tesco was running low on tinned soups, beans and curries. All the dettol branded products were out of stock and no antibac hand wash

Sunshinesky1981 · 02/03/2020 11:46

In my local sainsbury yesterday at the pharmacy counter they had put up big signs saying they dont have masks or hand gel for sale, so i suppose a lot of people must have been asking

BlackeyedSusan · 02/03/2020 11:47

Thanks for the Safety ideas.

I was going to post about sink plungers on Saturday, after using mine again. But forgot. Good job someone else remembered.

BlackeyedSusan · 02/03/2020 11:49

Medium sized Asda: low on some pasta, no hand gel, bleach gone, rice gone, they were in the middle of restocking.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 11:50

That's really good permanently! I know you were concerned how they would take it.

BlackeyedSusan · 02/03/2020 11:50

Local pharmacy had handgel, small bottles but only two per customer, which is probably why they had some left.

itsnotjustflu · 02/03/2020 11:51

@permanentlyfrazzled1 I envy you. I wish we home schooled right now!! Thanks for the maths tip. I have some books sat waiting in my amazon basket. My local co-op is over stocked. Hubby doesn't want us to deregister and just wants us to take him out for 4 weeks....repercussions for that would be much bigger

Whatthefoxgoingon · 02/03/2020 11:51

@SingingBabooshkaBadly

I’d also get things like dental check ups, eye checks, vaccinations like hpv etc done if appropriate and possible.

BeyondReasonablyDoubtsLots · 02/03/2020 11:56

My shop is being delivered later. No basic uht milk so it's been upgraded to the regular store brand. No value jam so I'm getting Hartleys, and no own brand icing sugar so we have silver spoon. (We stocked up the baking cupboard to give us something to do - and it's edible too - if we're stuck at home)

They're also completely out of the kind of mop where you stick the wipes to them Grin

IfYouCanKeepYourHead1234 · 02/03/2020 12:00

Lurker here. Since people are talking about home education I'd like to flag up www.thinkersmeetup.com/ which runs live classes via zoom on loads of different topics. Also www.whizz.com/, www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize and artventure.com.au/

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 02/03/2020 12:01

Ofwarren they’re all used to me being a bit over dramatic (I’m part drama trained) but I had honestly expected yes to be shouted down, so I am relieved. It will be interesting to see if the rest of the community follows suit.
It’snotjusttheflu ouch, that could be expensive if the govt don’t insist on school closure. Your decision to home-ed now doesn’t have to be your decision for the rest of their school career, maybe just till July would do it, and there’s bound to be an active community near you to join in activities with once we all feel safe enough to want to rub shoulders with people again. I do know that I’m incredibly lucky that I’ve got the freedom to do this.
I was meant to be starting supply teaching 1 day a week mid March but they can find some other willing lamb for the slaughter!

NcFortuna · 02/03/2020 12:01

@itsnotjustflu that doesn’t sound right to me. Unless you can provide a link I’d disregard it.

RhubarbTea · 02/03/2020 12:13

Another vote for Conquer Maths here, you can get a good home ed discount if you search the net, or buy via an educational group (I forget the name) and discount is even bigger.

LemonDropChilli · 02/03/2020 12:16

I’ve just been to Aldi and there were no shortages of anything as far as I could see. Heaps of pasta, rice, tinned stuff etc. I did notice a big display of Dettol
Sprays that had been placed by the tills. The reason I’m mentioning it, is because I’m around 2.5 miles from Bury. I would have thought having a confirmed case on the doorstep would mean a bit of panic buying but it was just like a normal Monday.

RhubarbTea · 02/03/2020 12:20

Hmph, I was going to order a basic Braun £12.50 thermometer (not the in ear kind) from Amazon but didn't. Last night I noticed the in stock date was a few weeks in the future and kicked myself, then ordered anyway. Now this morning in stock date is saying 1-2 months! Wish I hadn't dithered about now... I'm hoping mine will still be sent when they say but have a feeling they will keep pushing the delivery back again and again.

TipseyTorvey · 02/03/2020 12:21

I'm in my office at the moment and have heard no less than 5 groups discussing it this morning and every single conversation ends with 'but I'm not worried, I mean it's just the flu'. I'm starting to wonder if I have gone a bit mad thinking it's more serious then I see the data and am I'm glad I'm a bit more prepared than most.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 12:24

I think lots of people are going to be in for a shock when this ramps up and that's a big worry. I'm so glad I started prepping for this 4 weeks ago.

NatoPMT · 02/03/2020 12:34

Did the school run thiS morning and saw 2 people wearing masks in the street for the first time in my postcode and went to Tesco’s

Most stock ok except no hand gel (they are in stock in independent pharmacies here) but for the 2nd day running, the Tesco’s cleaners were mopping the floor with dettol- smelt very strong
