Prepping For A Pandemic ....9

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 23:57

wheresmojo asked at the end of thread eight if other posters could keep an eye on threads filling up and start new ones if possible as she’s busy this week and may not have the time, saw thread 8 getting full so thought would start number 9 before going to bed. Thank you to ofwarren for the live updates too. I’ve copied and pasted the info that wheresmymojo has included in every thread, hopefully formatting doesn’t mess up.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar thanks Flowers

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Be careful with Zinc make sure you don't take over the recommended dosage and remember to add the dosage of Zinc in any multivitamin a too.
I don't think the body can store Zinc but too much can still make you ill.

WitchDoc · 03/03/2020 09:44

Completely agree @NatoPMT

But when I imply as such on other threads or in rl I'm accused of scaremongering. I don't think it's scaremongering to suggest we should be taking responsibility for ourselves & to not rely on the authorities.

I've been saying to DH for weeks (he's a sales director) to implement the measures I've taken at home at work. He hasn't. He's following government advice, same as at the kids schools.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 09:46

India, the world’s main supplier of generic drugs, has restricted the export of 26 pharmaceutical ingredients and drugs made from them, including paracetamol, as concern mounted the coronavirus outbreak could turn into a pandemic.
Via the guardian live feed

Well it's a good job I have shit tonnes 😂

NatoPMT · 03/03/2020 09:48

Zinc lozenges:

Went to the chemist. Asked. She looked at me strangely and said no such thing

I blew my nose, hand santised. Got our phone, wiped it was excess sanitiser, opened thread, read out loud bit about zinc lozenges

Looked up. Chemists face 😂😂

She gave me attached pic. So they do exist but not as throat lozenges. These are supplements that you can keep in your mouth.

Had 2 and I have to say, I can’t feel sore throat. I’ve also gargled with probiotics which helps.

Careful @ofwarren rather than being seen as taking responsibility for yourself & your family... you'll be accused of being selfish & stockpilingHmm

Puppycorn · 03/03/2020 09:51

For anyone trying to place orders in supermarket apps in mobile phones, try using laptops or desktops. I tried to book the weekly usual order for the weekend but still it wouldn’t go through the payments page. But then logged in via laptop and tried the same, received an otp from the bank and only then was able to finish the checkout, if that helps.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 09:51

Ha ha, @WitchDoc I got my stuff weeks ago like most of us sensible preppers did.
I'm not sharing either 😁

WitchDoc · 03/03/2020 09:52

Good for you! @ofwarren Me neitherGrin

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 09:55

It's infuriating that people think preppers stockpile though isn't it.
I've just been buying more than normal for the last 4 weeks.
You only have to search #panicbuying on twitter and loads of people are blaming us preppers, when it's the people who didn't prep who are to blame.

NatoPMT · 03/03/2020 09:55

Well isn’t that the utter smokescreen of Toryism - take responsibility for yourself, but only to the extent we say is ok. Otherwise you’re hysterical. And we aren’t telling you anything you should hear, just what suits us.

The irony of having total faith in those that tell us to be responsible for ourselves.

It’s definitely not scaremongering not to trust what we are being told. We have to be managed. That’s what managing (Leading) a country is!!

Tinnednut · 03/03/2020 10:00

I'm sure when this hits people are going to direct their anger at preppers despite most having the same opportunity to stock up.
It doesn't help that others don't understand the supply and demand aspect supermarkets mean that those of us who stocked up even as recently as a week ago have helped the supermarkets replenish their stock.

I doubt we would have seen the shortages on hand gel etc if it wasn't pay day weekend. Now is the time for shops to start limiting hand gel and cleaning products to no more than two per person.

RhubarbTea · 03/03/2020 10:00

This version of Sambucol has zinc in and there is currently a £2 voucher if it's your first subscribe and save delivery.
Elderberry is good for the immune system and the winter we were getting every cough and cold going, this was the only thing that saved us. It's also delicious Grin

Tinnednut · 03/03/2020 10:01

And that many people don't get preppers don't panic buy!

NatoPMT · 03/03/2020 10:03

The element of this that is really jarring for me is how essentials are being bought up for commercial use and being sold back for ridiculous prices.

A prepper I know who I discussed this with a month ago said she was buying nappies to barter with (she thinks there’s a shtf situation developing)

Now, I think a few weeks ago won’t upset the supply chain, I think bartering is ok to an extent, but if a parent needed formula for eg, I had some and didn’t have a baby, and that parent didn’t have anything to barter with, I’d have to give them the damn milk. I’m not ok with either making money off this or withholding something that others need more than me.

I said that to her and she agreed. She’s not up for exploiting, but the panic buyers could cause supply issues and the exploiters are another level of disgusting

NatoPMT · 03/03/2020 10:05

Ok these zinc lozenges I bought really seem to have flattened my sore throat. I’m actually really impressed

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 10:05

Today PM @BorisJohnson will hold a press conference to set out the government’s action plan to tackle the spread of coronavirus: t.co/9Y3UWUFh56

AlohaMolly · 03/03/2020 10:10

Is that what people think are happening? That we are being ‘managed?’ I’ve just caught up from last night and the videos people have mentioned sound oddly The Walking Dead like.

What is the general consensus on the outlook for the rest of the year? I was sort of hoping this would be shit in a month for a month and then blow over, but is that not what you reckon?

Legoandloldolls · 03/03/2020 10:11

Exactly! I bought hand gel while there was thousands at the till in Primark. So how did I take all the supply when sone arsehole is selling them for £10 each in their hundreds on Ebay? They have hundreds. I have one each for the kids. I'm doing my last shop today then that is it. Just weekly shops from here on in

NatoPMT · 03/03/2020 10:19

Yeah, your maximum of 5 bottles is gonna kill us all Lego!!!

@AlohaMolly - probably, if you look at the differences between what the politicians are telling us, then see the direct contradictions the drs and health execs are saying, we definitely aren’t being told the truth - listen to the health care professionals.

The Tories want us to vote for them, they want to keep some sort of order, they need to keep the economy going (why oh why that is more important than people.... thanks capitalism) they don’t want us safe, they want short term gain for their party. Long term doesn’t matter to them

nibdedibble · 03/03/2020 10:20

@AlohaMolly I think comparing with Wuhan, this will rumble on for a few months. We are now where they were at the beginning of January.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 10:28

Omg, we aren't going out of the house at the moment as most of you already know and I had ordered a bread tin from Argos.
The guy just came and knocked on the front door and I obviously didn't open it quick enough so we went round the side of the house and just walked into the kitchen with it! Literally opened the door!

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 10:29

Not we went round the side, HE did. Just walked into my house! 😱

MoonlightMistletoe · 03/03/2020 10:32

Checked in on BBC 2 the conference will be held live in approximately 5-10mins.

WitchDoc · 03/03/2020 10:32

From the BBC website

According to the the Italian news agency, ANSA

Some 40% are in hospital and only 10% are in intensive care, Ansa reported.

Phew, Only 10% in intensive care. And there was me thinking it was a bad virusConfused

echobench · 03/03/2020 10:35

Thanks for the zinc recommendations. Was looking for lozenges rather than supplements which I have already.

Online shop arrived: no Dettol laundry spray, no Calpol and no Assam tea! How very dare they?
