Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Tbh I probably wouldn’t be able to let family down for a wedding, especially if DDs were bridesmaids

KundaliniRising · 29/02/2020 12:01

I can not believe the attitude of posters on that holiday thread Shock

I wonder sometimes if i live in a parallel universe.

echobench · 29/02/2020 12:04

We are modifying behaviour with regard to optional activities where possible. But a family wedding is non-optional! We aren't kissing, hugging and handshaking in social contexts. Quite easy to lift up hands and make a big gesture of blowing kisses while saying "No contact, coronavirus precautions!" We had relatives over last night who are now on board with prepping. Also they aren't offended about lack of hugs etc when we explained that we are more of a risk to them than the other way round (we have DC at school, work in healthcare, they are elderly).

Ibloodylovewomen · 29/02/2020 12:06

Whatthefox, yes I cannot imagine pulling out of it Sad, it would go against all my values. Two of us as a family have underlying health issues which is making it all feel a bit more scary Sad.

So cash - we rarely have much in the house except a drawer full of odds and sods of loose change.

Thinking of getting some cash out but then someone up thread mentioned the risk of germs being transmitted on money.

Would it be worth putting a stash of notes in an envelope in the freezer to kills germs? Would it work?

Sorry I probably sound paranoid but am on immune suppressing meds.

Am thinking it won’t do any harm but will it do any good?

Only flaw in my cunning plan would be to remember to defrost it in time for use. Grin

Hi been following the thread for a long time and very grateful of the advice shared. I'm just wondering what people are doing in regards to bringing things into the house, groceries etc? Also how people are handling post?

DollyMoped · 29/02/2020 12:08

*I have a 5 weekly hairdresser colour, so might bung a dye in my shop today just in case.

I'm so vain that even in confinement I don't want grey roots!
*
I have to admit I was having similar thoughts about stocking up on make up foundation this morning 🙈

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 12:10

Pretty sure own fenced off back garden where you can't possibly come into contact with other = fine when in isolation

Dog walking = not fine at all and you'll find yourself quarantined elsewhere by PHE

We had quite a long debate on the other thread on this.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/02/2020 12:17

I’m not sure cash is such a problem. I’m storing the new plastic notes only. Viruses can’t live on them forever. I’d rather store the notes now whilst the chances of them being infected are low, rather than later when the virus is much more prevalent.

Co-op 50/50 bread lasts over a week - if you buy it from Tesco’s it only lasts a few days

If you slice bananas and par-freeze for 2 hours on a baking tray, then transfers them to Tupperware they don’t stick together. You can then use them in banana and peanut butter toasties for breakfast which keep you full for hours - I’ve taste tested them and they are good. My 8yo loves banana slices fried in coconut oil with cinnamon - good vitamin hit

I have to say, which I haven’t seen discussed anywhere, I’m in inner London in a deprived borough - I’m worried about social unrest. People aren’t going to be able to stockpile if they are hand to mouth.

I saw on the last thread someone suggested donating to food banks if they can afford it. Just wanted to mention again as a reminder

LittleSwede · 29/02/2020 12:22

I've forgotten about cash Blush otherwise just about ready to hunker down for a couple if weeks if necessary. Could possibly do with more baby wipes, snacks and gin!

planningaheadtoday · 29/02/2020 12:27

@MinesaPinotPlease
Put the notes, submerged in diluted laundry detergent or diluted Milton.

You can be sure they will be clean and separate and dry them on a towel afterwards.

I might be wrong but I thought freezing doesn't kill the virus I believe as i think it may dormant at sub zero temperatures.

I did a bit of research after my packages from China arrived just after Wuhan shut down. I'd assumed that cargo in the hold of a plane would be freezing and therefore kill the virus. I was wrong. Sorry it was weeks ago and I can't find the link.

A hot wash (60•C) will also kill it, laundering money, whatever next!

middleager · 29/02/2020 12:29

I've been thinking about this food and all the rubbish/waste building up if refuse collections are stopped.

Our bin men went on strike for quite a while last year and there were issues with rats in some roads.
I'm a bit too young to remember the 3 day weeks in the 70s but the footage of the mounting rubbish is quite something.

3rd case of #coronavirus reported in #Denmark. The Danish Patient Safety Agency states that the virus has been detected in a person who recently attended a conference in #Munich. It is believed that he was infected at the conference.

ChocSprinkles18 · 29/02/2020 12:35

Thank you ofwarren for the updates. Italy should have released their numbers at 12, but I can’t see anything yet.

Trying to explain the situation to my extended family is like banging my head against the wall. I would say the majority believe it’s ‘just like the flu’ but they flu kills more people’. If something does happen though, I’m sure they will all want the food I’ve stored!!

Blueberryham · 29/02/2020 12:49

Yes I feel like I need to prep 3 times the amount I need for my family. As I will have two other extended families who will expect me to provide for them if the shtf

MinesaPinotPlease · 29/02/2020 12:51

@planningaheadtoday

Money laundering made me laugh 😂

Thanks for the info on how to disinfect them.

tallah · 29/02/2020 12:59

@ofwarren Do hashtags work on Mumsnet? Genuine question. I keep chuckling when I see you hashtag them it might hang on maybe I'm missing something?

tallah · 29/02/2020 13:00

Christ my predictive had a mind of its own there. I'm not even sure what I meant to write haha

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:00

They don't work. They are only on there because they are copy and paste direct from twitter. Im not going to amend them all as it's a faff.

@ofwarren ah I see :-) As you were!

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:03

I don't think it will come back as transmitted from pets but if it did, I would keep my cat in. She would hate it though. She's not allowed out at the minute with being heavily pregnant and she is so annoyed.
