Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Whilst trying not to sound dismissive I think the idea of putting notes either in the freezer or in cleaning solution is going a little OCD. Consider that it will have been kept in storage prior to getting to the cashpoint and then in the cash point and the virus doesnt have a very long survival period outside of a living organism. I would suggest if you are inclined to keep money stored as a backup contingency then any virus will have ceased to become an issue long before you use the money. A good wash of the hands after storing the money should suffice.

The greater risk would be sneeze or cough droplets collected on coats/shoes/face/hair when out in public spaces. Yet I dont expect these will be cleaned everytime you get home like you are suggesting with the cash.

Again, I dont intend to belittle rather just inject a counter point.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:10

I agree onetimeprepper
When I'm out I've been touching the buttons on the crossing with my coat sleeve or pushing doors with it. My sleeves will be far more likely to have the virus on and I don't wash it.
I sprayed it with the Dettol fabric spray yesterday for the first time, when I thought about it.

The poster who was worried about that is taking immunosuppressants. Cleansing bank notes is exactly what's been done in Wuhan.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:11

Ah right, that is understandable then Gorky.

DoomMerchant · 29/02/2020 13:12

Just spent a fortune, (a lot of the shelves were empty in Asda) stocking up on pasta, sauces, tins of soup, beans, corn, peas, fruit. Got loads of tins of Carnation. I have tinned ham, tuna and salmon. Got lots of rice, plain and flavoured and sachets of Idaho instant mash. Plenty of meat in freezer. Got around 12 bottles of water as ours regularly turns brown and dirty. Got packs of partbaked bread rolls. Stocked up on toiletries and soaps, bleach disinfectant. Got painkillers and prescription meds are as up to date as can be. Got loads of cat food and litter sorted. Got lots of wine and chocolate and biscuits. Bought plenty of Dettol wipes and tissues.

Am knackered Grin

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 29/02/2020 13:16

My huge food delivery just arrived, I'm in Ireland so this is my first attempt at stocking the cupboards. I didn't realise I'd bought so much, where are you keeping it all?
On a side note, I bought poppadoms for today's dinner, and they will be in date for another 7 weeks, so I will prob stock up on some of them to go with the Currys

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 13:18

Re dettol laundry so, 15 min soak should be fine before normal washing.

So i popped back to town to get a few more hand gels, the manager said they were all sold out in 20 min this am and due to supply issues he couldn't say when more due.

He also said they had no anti bac wipes left but queuing I happened to spy some Smile not well advertised and sort of up turned and these hand wipes say they kill virus's too. Only 5 packs left but I need them for work.

All around me in super drug, boots, pound stores, people asking '' is there more hand sanitiser coming ''

A good sign over all. People are taking this seriously. And the more that use gel and slow the spread the better.

DoomMerchant · 29/02/2020 13:18

yes, I checked the use by date on everything I bought, they have ages on them, got 4 packs of bacon and have loads of eggs too they are good till end of March. I have a box full but the rest is in carrier bags in the spare bedroom and near the back door where it is cooler.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:19

NewYear I've got all the tinned and dried stuff in the spare room in boxes. I know others have put stuff under beds and in lots of other ingenious places.

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 13:19

BTW super drug had loads of dc chewy sweet style vitamins on offer. I paid full price yesterday in waitrose.

One dc has a raging cold.

tiddlerthefish · 29/02/2020 13:20

DH (who scoffs usually at my preparedness I am by no means a prepper usually but have been stashing away things slowly for a week or so now) has just returned from our usual Saturday Aldi shop. He said it's absolutely heaving, busier than Christmas and that one chap had so much shopping he was still unloading it on the conveyor well after the till person was scanning, having to run between bagging up and unloading the trolley.

People are definitely stocking up. DH has stopped thinking I'm ridiculous and came home with loads of extra bits and pieces. Hurrah for common sense prevailing.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:24

My ASDA delivery is at 8pm. I wonder if I'll get any substitutions or items out of stock?

Michaelbaubles · 29/02/2020 13:24

Just come back from Lidl and it was really busy! Shelves very well stocked though (no hand gel!) and it looked like people were doing very thorough Big Shops rather than prepping as such. But still a good sign if it means people generally have a week’s food in stock.

Loving your glass-half-full optimism Smile

OneTimePrepper · 29/02/2020 13:25

@GorkyMcPorky

Okay thanks for highlighting that issue. I did overlook that on their message. I now understand the concern.

In such a scenario they might wish to ask a close friend or family member draws out the cash from them if feasible.

I certainly would not be cleaning the money because it might take any virus from a static state on a banknote to a mobile state on a droplet of water vapour.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:28

Just logged onto my Tesco delivery account. No hand gels in stock there either! Looking like there is a shortage.
So glad I got mine weeks ago!!

MissPoldark · 29/02/2020 13:35

I’ve got my usual shop coming tomorrow. I’ll be bloody well fucked off if there’s stuff missing because people have been clearing the shelves.

NatoPMT · 29/02/2020 13:38

All longer life cheeses (halloumi, soft and feta) has out of stock stickers on the price banners today

Kinda surprised because that takes thought / research not panic buying.

magicrainbowbeans · 29/02/2020 13:39

I found one 70% hand gel on tesco for delivery today, otherwise out of stock

Aurea · 29/02/2020 13:45

I just got some hand gel in WHSmiths which maybe is not an obvious place to look.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 13:48

#NORWAY- Oslo University Hospital is taking measures as there’s suspicion that #Coronavirus might be spreading on the premises. Everyone who visited ophthalmology at Ullevål Hospital between 24.02 / 28.02 to self quarantine. Dozens of employees being tested for #coronavirus.

tiddlerthefish · 29/02/2020 13:49

@MissPoldark I've just checked my online shop due Tuesday and several things that I usually buy are out of stock (bread mix being one!)

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 13:50

I imagine the daily mail prepping article had wide readership. Life imitating art imitating life....

shouldhavecalleditoatabix · 29/02/2020 13:50

Talking about interesting things to do in the house for exercise, we have a PS4 with BR headset. I've been using BoxVR as a workout and there are a few other games like Beat Saber which get the heart rate up and the body moving. That and YouTube workouts is something a bit more fun and keeps you active!
