Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

I am astounded by some attitudes to holidays @CocoaLipbalm.

My elderly PIL are jetting off on a cruise around Asia next week!! ShockConfused The cruise have apparently altered a couple of stops (switched Japan for South Korea last I heard, although that was before the massive increase in cases there). My PIL are completely blasé about the whole thing. I find it hard to believe cruises are still even running!! I shan't be volunteering myself to be their YouTube spokesperson when they end up trapped in some far flung port.

Also, friends of ours flew out to N Italy today, close to a locked down town. They are concerned but say they 'can't afford to write off the money' they spent on the holiday apparently. I don't understand this mentality at all. The money has already been spent, you are just missing out on a holiday? I'd happily pay £2k to not have to visit a high risk area with my family, although granted I'm probably more risk adverse with this sort of stuff than most.

wheresmymojo another here who would love kitten pics, I'm sure they'll be lovely and a bit of light hearted relief.

Just been checking and I have 244 cat food pouches and 3 large bags dry for my boysBlush. Imagine trying to tell a cat he can't have his usual or he's on rations - there's no way I want to be in that situation Wink

Name change here. I have been on these threads on Covid-19 since the start. I live just outside of Haslemere in a Hamlet. I will report in with any observations but I feel it will be business as usual. Plus in light of any advise otherwise it will be business as usual!

Haslemere health centre is like the towns big GP surgery. It’s a small rural town but extremely popular with London commuters as it’s got a fast line in under a hour to Waterloo.

The health centre is attached to a Hospital and my son was in the hospital this week.

We will see what happens as my kids do clubs in the town.

Don’t forget to get older DC to empty their lockers, bring it all home and then take in what they need on daily basis. If their school is suddenly shut down (or your family takes a decision to self isolate) they have everything they need to keep studying at home.

I ordered novels, jigsaws, craft supplies and some toys this week - they’ll be saved for birthdays and Christmas I hope, but if necessary they can be brought out during isolation.

I bought ingredients for making treats rather than treat foods - I’ll eat chocolate bars in advance, but not cocoa powder and caster sugar. It will also be a distraction activity.

I’ve been in isolation before (due to caring for someone immunosuppressed at home) and staying busy is the key to not going insane. I did an hour by hour timetable - with young kids involved I think I’d do 30 or 45 minute blocks.

7th case of #Coronavirus in #Norway. It is a member of the Hospital staff.

Qatar reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

OneTimePrepper · 29/02/2020 11:28

I piked up on an article in the Daily Mail about the potential for 10% of Brits to need hospital treatment and the amount of denial within the comments is insane. I dont know if the article was written purely for clickbait or if the press are being guided to educate people on the worst case scenario. However if things get bad there are a lot of people who will be in for a major shock and I think that is a bigger danger than the virus. I hope the government have strong plans for dealing with panic and any potential disorder.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/02/2020 11:31

@Somerville

Good point about the lockers.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/02/2020 11:33

I'm not worrying about water. I've got a sawyer water filter and can drink water out the canal if I have to! Don't think it'll get that bad though.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 11:35

I'm not worried about water either viva. I just thought it was interesting as it's obviously been bought out.
There must be a small amount of stocking up happening around the country.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 29/02/2020 11:35

I am thinking of veneto and hope all is OK.

It is very scary when we reach the tipping point between hypothetical and actually happening. It's scary even if you have prepared as much as you can, I really think I would be frantic after my hospital trip yesterday if we weren't prepared.

I don't know how to prepare for the money situation though, DH will not get paid if they close/he is off as he works via an agency. I'm sure there are lots of us in the same boat. How will people pay their bills if they are paid weekly and it just stops? I don't know whether a thread about financial issues eg claiming universal credit and the wait for funds/approved foods website/paying priority bills first eg rent/council tax first would be too hasty or worrying for people (and I wouldn't want it to be patronising either!) Of course I may be well behind the curve and there already is one!

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 29/02/2020 11:38

Just went to stock up on meds in the chemist, up at the till my bank card wouldn't work. Went to the atm to withdraw cash and the atm just swallowed my card Shock
Rang the bank and they said it didn't look like there were any issues with the card or account and the card must have just been damaged. I'll have a new one in 5-7 working days.

bobbbbby · 29/02/2020 11:40

Just manged to buy a second hand freezer on FB for £35, it gives us extra capacity to freeze more meat, bread and milk than just having our existing one

MrsTidyHouse · 29/02/2020 11:40

I was half-listening to radio 4 yesterday, and i’m Sure I heard someone say that the general public knows only about one percent of the preparations that are taking place. Not sure whether that’s reassuring or frightening. Probably both.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/02/2020 11:43

I'd be hugely reassured to know that wishful thinking wasn't the only tool they were reaching for during an emerging pandemic.

MrsTidyHouse · 29/02/2020 11:44

I have a question about self-isolating at home. People describe it as staying indoors, but would you be allowed into your garden if you keep a minimum distance from the garden walls?

Not trying to be facetious, but it would mean a world of difference to stir-crazy kids.

MrsTidyHouse · 29/02/2020 11:47

Would a virus-free person be allowed to travel home to look after self-isolating family members?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 29/02/2020 11:48

Dd1 is doing her GCSEs this year, surely if the schools close yr 11 will still have to attend?

MrsTidyHouse · 29/02/2020 11:49

Sorry, I need to step away from this now. I have an SN child who roars and shrieks when washing is imminent. My mind is racing.

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 11:52

I think that's probably correct @MrsTidyHouse. Perhaps if the public (fuelled by the tabloids) could be trusted to take on board information sensibly and not to leap to panic stations immediately rampaging every supermarket and petrol station etc we might be a bit more clued in.

I really don't think the govt are lazing over a leisurely Saturday brunch right now. There will be big teams working around the clock doing all sorts. I'm not especially happy about our relaxed approach to airport screening and so on but even rigorous screening won't catch cases incubating.

When I find myself worrying about Boris et al I remind myself that compared with the US shit show we could do a lot worse.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 11:53

2 new cases of #Coronavirus in #Netherlands

Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/02/2020 11:54

That is some really tiny comfort there @AvocadoOwl

Grin
Whatthefoxgoingon · 29/02/2020 11:55

Appreciate your updates @ofwarren

aliasname · 29/02/2020 11:55

Thanks to those who answered my questions about dog walking. I suppose I really meant in a lockdown-but-still-able-to-go-out-within-town situation, rather than an isolation situation. I admit I hadn't thought about touching gates etc ~ its amazing what you do automatically without thinking isn't it? I'm like a toddler, touching everything.

The other night we were watching a sci-fi movie and the astronauts had helmets on, all I could think was how weird that would be not being able to touch your face. Within 20 seconds of putting it on, I'd have the urge to scratch my nose or rub my eye.

Ibloodylovewomen · 29/02/2020 11:58

I've been following along from the first thread. We've got a family wedding in a few weeks and it is concerning me. People are traveling from all over the UK, there will be lots of handshaking, hugs etc, and eating food that has been prepared and served by others, just feels inevitable that we would catch it. It would cause huge family issues if we didn't go as my DDs are bridesmaids Blush, but I just can't bear the thought of putting us in a situation like that. What are others here doing about events like that?
