Prepping for a pandemic....8

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 21:54

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

A live kitten birth on the thread! This truly is the best thread on MN Grin

katienana · 29/02/2020 10:05

Go Noodle on YouTube is good for getting kids moving. Cosmic Kids Yoga is good too. I've been thinking I should buy a printer as that would make it easier to generate school work and we kind of need one anyway

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 10:08

Iran reports 205 new cases of coronavirus and 9 new deaths, raising total to 593 cases and 43 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Bearing in mind, the death toll is said to be a lie as the BBC found out it's over 210

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/02/2020 10:13

ooo, it's lovely to read that we have imminent kittens in the group! I think I need some kittens Grin

dh is flying abroad this week for work. Hand luggage only and not very much space left after his work stuff.

He's got a few masks, in case he ends up in an area where they are a requirement, some hand gel, wipes and tissues. Is there anything else he should reasonably be taking? My main concern is that he ends up stuck somewhere.

@CrapTVAddict (Source www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51684624 top news story BBC news page 'hunt for source of UK infected case' in case link fails)

LangClegsInSpace · 29/02/2020 10:22

Having been unable to find hand sanitiser anywhere I have just ordered from Amazon:

91% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
Aloe vera gel
30ml precision tip squeezy bottles

Anybody trying this at home, remember that the alcohol is highly flammable so store it safely, avoid spillage and don't leave it uncovered to give off fumes etc.

I don't think you need to be as precise as this guy or to pre-sterilise all your utensils. Neat rubbing alcohol will work but will dry your skin out so just add some aloe vera while keeping the alcohol at 70% or above.

Pegase · 29/02/2020 10:33

I wouldn't worry too much about hand gel. I bought some of this www.superdrug.com/Skin/Hand-Care/Hand-Gel/Defendol-Hospital-Grade-Anti-Bacterial-Hand-Gel/p/793680 which I now think is not good enough as it doesn't specify what the alcohol content is but it's all I could get. Just focusing on really good soap and water hand washing. Same with masks- could only get FFP2 masks not 3 as all sold out but figure better than surgical masks at least.

Realistically I think preventing getting the virus is pretty damn hard without going into a bunker so I'm focusing more on measures for if we get it or have to self-isolate.

I'm pregnant as well- limited studies so far seem to suggest that there is no additional reason to panic due to this but it is a worry.

OneTimePrepper · 29/02/2020 10:33

New user here. Never really spent much time on this website but I found these prepper threads a wealth of information. I thought I would share a few thoughts I have had. A little pushed for time so just one about coffee because I am seeing that as a frequent commodity being purchased. Just keep in mind that some of the people who contract this illness develop pneumonia which will increase heart rate in an effort to help getting oxygen into your cells. Coffee in high doses will increase your heart rate too, so if you have symptoms of pneumonia as well as seeking medical assistance I would just be wary of excess coffee intake.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 10:35

Doing my online Asda shop now.
No hand gel whatsoever

We’ve pulled DS out of nursery (school nursery) because we’re so unimpressed with what’s going on, including not giving a flying fuck that he’s gluten intolerant and there being 43 children in his class! I was a primary teacher before I had him, so I’m gearing up to home school him if needs be until September. I would recommend a laminator and laminating pouches and whiteboard pens for those wanting to stock up on things for children - I know the pouches are plastic but it means resources will last a long time and can be wiped clean and re used depending on what they are. It also means you don’t run the risk of running out of paper!!

Twinkl is a good website, there are free bits on there but you can subscribe as well. Fiveminutemum on Instagram has great ideas on her blog and has a book out, too!

AlohaMolly · 29/02/2020 10:42

Also, in terms of freezer prep, I use the little tubs that we get the chutneys etc from an Indian takeaway to portion things like chilli etc for DS. They’ve been great if DS is the only one that needs dinner or for lunch or whatever as it means I don’t have to defrost a bigger portion just for him.

Coolcucumber2020 · 29/02/2020 10:43

This thread makes me feel very British! I am not normally one for calling out nationalistic tendencies, as I feel that it can be devisive, however there is something particularly cheery, organized, calm, strong, and just indefinably uniting about this thread.

It is like the WI Grin

I’m a bit of a lazy prepper, having never done this before. I have enough for a few weeks. I missed out on the hand gel and don’t want to make my own. I’m having to travel a bit in the next few weeks with work, on train, airports, buses and a holiday with the kids in a holiday park in the uk. I’ll go ahead but will keep an eye on the news. I wonder whether we could have a quick ‘travel’ check prep? Such as for me:

Airports - I will wash my hands directly after security. Spend little time in the airport. Sit away from people, not go to the cafes. Wash my hands before boarding. Bring disinfectant wipes for seat belt, seats and trays in plane. Hope I don’t sit next to someone coughing. Shock

Trains and buses - unfortunately no hand gel. But will refrain from touching my face. Wash hands as soon as I can afterwards. Sit away from people.

Kids holiday park and hotels - cut down on activities with others. Bring dettol disinfectant wipes and wipe down villa and hotel room. Not allow kids on soft play but will allow two kids clubs and just wash their hands directly after. I can’t stop everything.

I will only use contactless. I won’t wear a mask.

Is there anything I’ve forgotten?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 10:43

The cheap large bottles of water are out of stock too. Glad I grabbed a load 2 weeks ago!

Coolcucumber2020 · 29/02/2020 10:45

Also I do think that we may go past the self isolation and need to carry out a minimum of activities if this lasts 2-3 months.

In which case we do need to prep for how we move around more safely.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 29/02/2020 10:46

I have no stored water bar 3 ,5 litre tubs/bottles that are out of date plus some water purification tablets. We do have an overflowing stream and a well though and a huge hot water tank.

middleager · 29/02/2020 10:53

I have a 5 weekly hairdresser colour, so might bung a dye in my shop today just in case.

I'm so vain that even in confinement I don't want grey roots! Shock

Snowdropdelight · 29/02/2020 10:55

Dh got dettol laundry stuff, but it's stuff you add to a wash?

Assume that's correct stuff...

He also got handgel but only one small bottle each from super drug?!

So I'll have to go out and get another 3 small bottles and more anti bac hand wipes.

He's well on board now and has been working out how many months we could go paying bills and mortgage if things shut down.

Friend in China but not near wuhan who has still been in lock down situation said things are slowly returning to normal there.
Shops opening, people back out on the streets. For first time she was able to picnic in a local park. It's v hot where she is.

There is life after covid.

It's just getting through these initial bottle necks.

CocoaLipbalm · 29/02/2020 10:55

Not wishing to derail this thread, but have you seen the level of denial on this thread?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3835516-AIBU-to-cancel-holiday

So many people saying the risk is minimal, it’s not going to hit healthy adults severely, etc.

All for a holiday.

Evergreenshrub · 29/02/2020 10:55

Please don't be alarmed by the temporary mortuary arrangements, I can't disclose how I know (work related) but these plans are activated on some scale in many scenarios (e.g. the temp mortuary set up in the aftermath of the London bombings) and although we all hope not to use them, it is sensible that they are there and regularly tested.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 10:59

snowdrop I found out yesterday off a poster on here that that Dettol laundry liquid only kills viruses if you soak them in it. It explains on the back.

nannynick · 29/02/2020 11:00

What about prepping finances? Someone mentioned an online payment issue occurring last night... might be unconnected but would having some cash be useful? However if you do get the virus then cash you have at home can be contaminated.

What about work, what if that is closed for several weeks and you get no pay? Do you have enough money in your bank account to keep paying bills?

I've been using PictoSelector.eu to produce some worksheets about telling the time. It's free software for PC or MAC(Intel). Used for producing things like Visual Timetables, PECS cards.

NutellaQuest · 29/02/2020 11:04

The Dettol laundry stuff only needs a 15 min soak to work on viruses.

middleager · 29/02/2020 11:08

Cocoa I've just been on that thread to add my two penneth as wouldn't even think of overseas travel right now.

Last week when DS was in Northern Italy and parts went into lockdown, gave me a taste of how I might feel if he were stranded there.

Re finances, I have kept some money back in the house just in case, but in our account we generally have enough to cover the month only.

However, if staff get ill who process payments then I guess it won't matter, but I may move some savings across.

KundaliniRising · 29/02/2020 11:09

For those that have limited freezer space, dried peas (protein), onion, garlic, peppers, etc are a good idea and are a fairly cheap option.

I would recommend also dried chickpeas, lentils, etc as they are high in plant proteins and works ot much cheaper than buying in tins.

Quinoa is an exellent seed to use in all sorts of stews, curries etc.

Other ideas are dried mixed seeds eg sunflower, alfalfa etc and beans such as mung beans for sprouting. Good for vitimins and protien.

Big bags of mixed herbs and spices to make food more interesting. These can be found on amazon very cheaply.

Dehydrating veg and fruit in an oven (if you do not have a dehydrator) will prolong the shelf life of things such as apples, bananas, kale and spinich.

Root veg can also be dried, they just need to be thinly sliced.

Butternut squash and pumpkins can last months if they are stored in a dry cool place. Make sure that the skins are intact and check weekly.

Sos mix a veggi option for sausages can be bought on amazon, these are great for toad in the hole.

Dried sliced lemons, can be used in a healing, soothing drink. A couple of slices of lemon, tsp ginger piwder or fresh, tsp tumeric, whizz up and add hot water plus a tsp of honey.

Thyme tea with honey is good for coughs and sore throats.

nellodee · 29/02/2020 11:10

If you have a switch, I highly recommend Ring Fit Adventure for giving you and the kids a proper bit of "get hot and sweaty" exercise in front of the telly.
