Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Thanks @actiongirl1978

UK cases now at 35 - how do you know how many are recovered?

Heartyhooker · 01/03/2020 16:22

You can make quite a palatable cough syrup by thinly slicing lemon and garlic , putting it in a clean jar and covering with honey. Lasts a few days in the fridge but garlic taste does become more prominent as time goes on. If all else fails I shall walk widdershins round the outside of the house marking out a salt boundary

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 16:22

The west Yorkshire cases are Bradford and Leeds

BridgeToTerabithia · 01/03/2020 16:33

@ofwarren how are you finding the cities please? Can you find the cities or towns for Hertfordshire at all?

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 16:40

I'm not touching stash (such as it is) but eating fresh and topping up at quiet times in our local store. Planning on wearing gloves around but found today the issues of touchscreen at self serve, lol.

I read a useful article by Laurie Garret (on Wuhan virus as it was referred to way back in January!) on Foreign Policy website with tips for staying safe. It was probably linked on here anyway.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 16:40

bridge the newspapers are reporting in the west Yorkshire ones. That's in the guardian.
You need to keep searching twitter for coronavirus Hertfordshire for example, until the press releases something.
Their reporters will be working hard to find out.

Gammeldragz · 01/03/2020 16:42

Three in Hertfordshire apparently in total. Saw one twitter comment say Stevenage but obviously that's not confirmed.

DigitalGhost · 01/03/2020 16:44

Bradford has no chance then. It's filthy as it is. Also far too close to home for me. Confused

Just been to Asda and there was barely any hand wash! Saw a few people grabbing 4-5 a go.

Thanks @ofwarren for the update re: West Yorkshire. One of the areas you mentioned is where I live, feels suddenly more real. I’m definitely going to stock up on a few more bits on the way home from work tomorrow and I’m hoping it might galvanize my DH slightly, he’s very much humouring me at the moment!

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:08

Scary isnt it banana
My son has all his treatment at the LGI. We are supposed to every 8 weeks.
We usually get the train through Bradford interchange.

nellodee · 01/03/2020 17:11

Epidemic spread must be very interesting maths. I was thinking, we currently have cases from abroad, and then we are starting to have our own cases spreading as well. The cases from abroad will be dependent on the R0s of various other countries, combined with the measures we are taking to prevent importing the virus. The cases from this country will have their own R0 based on our internal containment measures. Over time, the growth rate in this country may be more affected by internal growth than import rates. The doubling period is affected by the R0. Each country has its own R0 which again can change over time.

It's fascinating stuff. There's going to be some amazing data to crunch at the end of all this. Maybe, and I know this is a silver lining to a cloud of shit, what we learn from the spread of this virus with a -relatively- low CFR might at some point in the future save us from a much nastier virus.

There would be a really amazing "Can you manage a pandemic" game in it. You would have to appease your people and maintain their confidence in you, or they would ignore your edicts... keep your economy viable, or your people would starve. It's just the kind of game I would actually play, to be honest. I bet someone, somewhere, is working on just this right now.

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 17:14

Nellodee I was musing this afternoon as I walked round the park that epidemic modeller could be an interesting career.

mybrainhurtsalot · 01/03/2020 17:19

There is a board game called Pandemic:

Italy reports 566 new cases of coronavirus and 5 new deaths, raising total to 1,694 cases and 34 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/03/2020 17:21

@nellodee can I suggest Plague Inc? (iTunes and other platforms) Instead of managing a plague, you are the plague and try to kill off the world. The CDC has used it in some of their what-if scenarios.

Honestly, it’s very hard to get a good pandemic started and to continue. Oddly reassuring.

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 01/03/2020 17:30

Plague inc is good, cheap on mobile platforms too, I bought it years ago and they're always releasing new content and scenarios, the fake news expansion is fun too, instead of killing off the world you have to spread a rumour and have the whole world believe it.

The devs of that game also have one called "rebel inc" where you're managing the population and keeping them under control etc. Bought it but not played it yet.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:32

I just can't get over the jump in Italian cases today. It's massive.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:35

With this update, the number of fatalities worldwide has reached 3,000. More than 88,000 confirmed cases, of which 42,417 people have recovered.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 17:37

I think it depends on the area @allonym
Some were taking just 24 hours but I've seen others say 48 and 72

TheMammothHunters · 01/03/2020 17:38

I know someone who had swabs taken late on Wednesday and no results yet.

nellodee · 01/03/2020 17:44

I've played both Pandemic and Plague Inc ( I love board games!). My husband won't play Pandemic with me any more, though, as he tells me I'm too bossy :D

tryingtoprep · 01/03/2020 17:46

I'm wondering about the extremely limited UK capacity for intensive care. Genuinely curious. If things got really bad, would Boris and other senior ministers receive some sort of private incubation if they needed it? Are there a few beds held back for them? I know competing for beds is still hopefully not going to happen.
