Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Dominican Republic reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

BrokenBrit · 01/03/2020 15:36

Thanks @ofwarren informative as always.
What time do we get Italy?

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:36

A 22nd person has died after contracting coronavirus in South Korea.

Puppycorn · 01/03/2020 15:40

Well I would say the official cases are not even doubling every week not every day as someone said. So I am expecting another couple of weeks of normality before the panic starts to set in. As of Feb 12th there were 9 cases and as of 1st March it’s 35 now (if it were exactly doubling in a week this 35 number should have come on 26th feb). So there is still some time to prepare.

@YoursTunbridgeWells Not Dipping into the stash now and my plan is to carry on normal weekly shopping and replace the bag of crisps with the latest use by date and use up the earlier one if need be. I have placed one more order yesterday and placed my first Costco order today for kitchen rolls etc (I haven’t bought anything I wouldn’t use on a normal day so just forward bought for few weeks)

One more tip is to buy large fresh vegetables like whole pumpkins and butternut squashes, chop them up and freeze them in an ice tray for couple of hours and then put them in a freezer bag with the date written on top. Dry chilli flakes, Pickles, olives, gherkins and jalapeños are also a great way to add some flavour and twist. Also consciously remembering to say “Namaste” 🙏🏼 instead of handshakes lol. Loved the tip to freeze puréed or chopped foods in foil box and then stacking them up in freezer bags. Thank you all.

@FelicityFebruary - repeat what spring said directly after you, I guess we just keep ourselves as safe and prepared as possible

Very frustrating when the governments response is creating a career into catastrophe situation for our NHS Which is compromising everyone’s safety

My MiL has just been diagnosed with heart failure, she needs open heart surgery. She’s going to be at the back of the queue if critical care rockets, she will be more vulnerable to the virus and It’s been stated care will be prioritised

But. It’s ok!!! Carrie Symonds is pregnant!! Yay.

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 15:44

@Puppycorn, my bestie is Japanese and we kon’nichiwa’d at lunchtime

She is feeling very smug as she hates being hugged

She said that Japan has half the infections over twice the timescale as Italy because they insist on kissing

Not sure if the maths is correct but I see her point

wheresmymojo · 01/03/2020 15:52

Just catching up, don't know if someone has already said this so apologies if so..

Annoying thing is we won't know what the figures are if they stop testing at 100.

They won't stop testing - they will probably stop contact tracing and testing anyone who doesn't go for medical treatment.

They'll still be reporting numbers to WHO.

OP posts:
AlohaMolly · 01/03/2020 15:52

In terms of maths, was it 3 yesterday and 12 today? If so, is that x4?

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 01/03/2020 15:57

She said that Japan has half the infections over twice the timescale as Italy because they insist on kissing

She might be on to something.

Puppycorn · 01/03/2020 15:57

@Alohamolly True. Not long before it turns 100+ though

echobench · 01/03/2020 15:59

I’m seriously angry with government inaction. PHE England doesn’t even advise against handshaking. Fiddling while Rome burns.

To PP with planned school trip to Germany— I would not be sending my DC. No way,

echobench · 01/03/2020 16:00

On a positive note my sweet DS made home made wraps yesterday.
Plain flour, baking powder, cook on stove.

wheresmymojo · 01/03/2020 16:01

Does anyone else have the maths now to work out what we can expect by end of next week

Experts say it doubles roughly every 2.4 days without interventions, since we're doing contact tracing and isolation I'll use 3 days and will exclude the ones already recovered

Today: 27(?) excluding recovered
Wednesday: 54
Saturday: 108
Next Tuesday: 216

Will be interesting to see what the actual numbers are.

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles it’s okay I have the same thinking that I know she works cash in hand as well as her regular job and it’s her livelihood.

We have an immunocompromised person in the household. To the extent that we will hand notices in at work to avoid being front line/working with public during this outbreak if it gets worse. She took the job knowing this (when 4 companies turned us down due to not wanting to take the infection risk). She has also been good in not coming when she is sick.

We’ve been talking about the possibility of stopping her coming over the last month, so she knows it’s coming. I’ve said I want her back but understand if she fills my slot. I was going to give her 2 weeks pay? Does that sound fair? She won’t take it so I’m going to have to physically post cash through her letterbox. She wouldn’t take it when she missed a week sick to protect us, so I got her a bigger Christmas present.

actiongirl1978 · 01/03/2020 16:10

To PP re: library freezing for soups, I made a huge batch of hidden veg tom pasta sauce yesterday.

I used an Ikea children's glass as a host for the plastic bag (the ones with flamingos and cactus's on) and put the bag inside.

Then filled with sauce to the top.

Then gently flattened the bag and folded over twice at the top (no air left inside) and pegged shut. Gently lay into a deep oven tray. Repeated 10 times, laying each bag on top of the other.

This morning they were all frozen, removed pegs and stored like library on their sides.

Hth. Smile

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 16:10

The french have banned / advised against kissing greetings (not sure which)

Yesterday, I kid you not, a man in the street, walking ahead of me covered one nostril, and blew out of the other into the air. I actually saw the cloud of droplets trumpet into the air

I was about 20 ft away and up wind so I hope i didn’t get a fine spray

If one thing comes from this, it should be spitting in the street is Not Done and it’s ok to stay off work / school with a cold

6 new cases of #coronavirus in #iraq— two in Baghdad and four in Sulaimaniya, it is reported that they returned from #Iran a few days ago

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 16:13

Generally we’re used to soldiering on when ill. Far less good at staying home at a slight sign of infection.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 16:15

Italy is 5pm @BrokenBrit

Heartyhooker · 01/03/2020 16:15

Delurking to say thank you for all the helpful info on these threads and to sound a note of caution about oxygen saturation monitors . I work in residential care and they can be tricky to get an accurate reading on . Nail varnish and circulatory diseases like reynards can make reading artificially low.
If you get a low reading get the person to cough and see if it gos up and if anyone has underlying chest problems there normal may be lower anyway. At work we always get baseline measurements with new clients and then look for changes.
Have been feeling relatively calm till I went in storage cupboard at work last night and saw we have acquired lots of heavy duty plastic laundry bags and safety glasses. Would also like to know where in West Yorkshire as ds1's school had a trip to Italian/French border at half term which serves our town and surrounding villages.

No idea what happened. I thought I wrote a reply to @mumoftwodc earlier but it didn't post.

Exercise. Getting out for fresh air as much as possible (in case of any self isolation periods).. Opening windows regularly at home to ventilate. Garlic - I use in cooking but people have advised it's best raw and crushed. Also in cooking - turmeric, ginger, sage, thyme, basil. Licorice for coughs (I use the root in boiled water to make tea). Honey. Lemon tea. Green tea. Essential oils (eucalyptus, lavender). @KundaliniRising has posted some really helpful info on these threads on natural stuff. There's s useful post she's got in the Caught Covid - Now what? thread.

I'm also wondering whether CBD might help? It's anti-inflammatory, I think.

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2020 16:16

I’ve seen mixed information re asthma.

Does anyone feel up to date on it as being at extra risk?
