Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

3 new cases of #Coronavirus in #Netherlands. 10 now in total

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 14:46

Don't forget though that ultimately it's up to you whether your child goes @WorryAboutCovid. If you aren't comfortable with the risk then keep him at home.

#Tetbury primary school confirms staff member has tested positive for Coronavirus #Gloucestershire t.co/O6aNDJRq07

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 14:50

I imagine the agent won’t lose any money unless there is govt advice not to travel to that area.
Agree with pp , if you are not happy, don’t send your child.

BrokenBrit · 01/03/2020 14:51

Quick question, my Facebook is FULL of generally quite intelligent people repeating the tripe that it’s OnLy ThE FLu!!
I think their mindset is worrying and has wider implications. Does anyone have any ideas how to best approach these people?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 14:54

Is anyone else worried about dipping into the stash too early? if everyone in the country starts panic buying now we could have issues with decimating the stash before lockdowns etc.
I don’t know how best to mitigate food supplies. I have deliveries booked and am prepared to go out if I have to

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 14:59

We won't be dipping into our stash until we can't manage normal shopping due to panic buyers clearing shelves or having to stay at home for isolation/lockdown.

middleager · 01/03/2020 14:59

Broken

My HR team are like that. I sit in the same office and they were unfazed about the co worker returning from Tenerife with a cough.

Another colleague is back next week from an area with minor cases, but she's travelling through international airports and I envy those with companies who take international travel seriously wrt self isolation.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/03/2020 15:01

@YoursTunbridgeWells I think the thing to do now is to treat your stash levels as a constant and continue your normal shopping and consuming patterns. So if you normally eat a loaf of bread a week, and you now have 2 loaves in your stash, the best would be to buy a third loaf...so you are consuming and replacing but maintaining the stash levels. Remember rotation!

MoonlightMistletoe · 01/03/2020 15:03

Is there any info on the London case, what part of London as I'm unsure weather to take my children to school or nursery at this point.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:03

Coronavirus updates:

  • Iran: 385 new cases, 11 new deaths

EliK · 01/03/2020 15:04

There's no crisps left in my stash. Woops. Think I'll need to get crackers to replace and we'll be less tempted to dip into them.
People are already panic buying in my area (and we've no known cases in the whole of Scotland).

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:11

#CzechRepublic reports 1st case of #Coronavirus.

Czech Rep was the first country to announce Theyre ready to treat Coronavirus patients at the very beginning of the epidemic. Even willing to accept foreign patients. Will be interesting to see how they deal with it.

Mrsappleby · 01/03/2020 15:11

Big Boots and Superdrug in my city centre sold out of all anti bac gel and anti bac hand wipes.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:12

I can't find anything moonlight
It's so annoying that they only give the county or city

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 15:15

This “just the flu” mantra is the governments fault

The signs are all there... this years flu has hospitalisation rate of 1%, CV is 14/15%

The worlds stock markets are crashing and Other governments are imposing strict regulations on travel and to reduce community transmission

Our government has abandoned overseas citizens (comparatively)

Been late to restrict travel / been much more relaxed

Allowed sensationalist press to communicate what they should be communicating. Lack of press releases / clear comms

Not issued definitive and clear advice - had contradictions on NHS ability to cope having been directly challenged by NHS chiefs

Unless the government issue a Churchill style address to inform their citizens that the issue need keeping at containment stage and to follow advice, no one will take any notice until they have to panic

Boris is releasing press comms about his gf being pregnant while people’s houses are submerged and we’re on the verge of pandemic

It’s shocking

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:16

Netherlands reports 3 new cases of coronavirus, raising total to 10, some of them of unknown origin; 1 woman seriously ill t.co/eUoE2b20hL

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 15:17

Just to clarify, cv is 15-ish% hospitalisation with an addition percent on top of deaths / critical, so I think it’s actually 20% requiring professional health care, unless anyone knows better

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:18

The 3 cases of #coronavirus in Czech Republic have all been to #Italy and 1 of them is an American citizen. She’s only 21 years old.

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 15:21

Nato I hear you. What can be done? I feel like Cassandra.

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 15:22

Broken, you can't get through to them and it's not your place too.

All you can do is carry on. I am the same at work, people laughing it off, the flu, well that guardian article someone posted said its 20 times killer than flu!

I find the people saying it's nothing are quite forceful about it, so no ''discussion' 'is opened up!!

Rather like brexit, there will be others in the office thinking the same as you broken but just not saying anything.

Tunbridge, I was thinking the same thing.
It's like buying too much far in advance for Xmas. I've stopped that because I eat the Xmas treats too early Blush

We are very nearly done here. I'm as prepared as I can be. A huge thank you to all on these threads!!

The biggest thing I have left is full tank of petrol.

Does anyone else have the maths now to work out what we can expect by end of next week.

ooopsupsideyourhead · 01/03/2020 15:23

So. Maybe I’ve found my people... I have always, always, had enough food in storage to see us through a couple of months. In fact, I based our last house purchase on the storage possibilities 😂

Can someone recommend freezer bags for soup/sauces using the library method? My freezer is the least organised part of my home, and always fills up too quickly with oddly sized bags of this and that...

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 15:26

If you are 60+ or if you have an underlying condition like:
-cardiovascular disease
-respiratory condition
-diabetes
you have a higher risk of developing severe #COVID19. You may wish to avoid crowded areas or places where you might interact with people who are sick"-@DrTedros
WHO

CrapTVAddict · 01/03/2020 15:32

Does it say how many confirmed in bury?

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 15:32

Ooops I can't advise on the that but after being defrosted yesterday, dh organised or freezer, it's actually giving me pleasure to see it so clean, roomy and tidy.
