Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Until these threads I'd totally forgotten you can buy powered custard. I've been buying fresh. So I've saved a few Bob there.

Also the jelly packs was a great idea. Brilliant for some low key pudding treats but also good to eat if someone has been ill.

I wonder how many of us on this thread are now near infected person spot (I am Berkshire) and or knows of people returning from near infected countries who don't feel well and can't get tested??

I had a sore throat last week which has gone but recently developed pains in my head, neck and ears.

I'm not sure if it's been covered already but I'm thinking to get some olbas oil/ essential oils to treat sinus pain as I rarely get a runny nose just blocked sinuses high up, I will be able to use the steam method.

So if anyone else has sinus issues definitely add that to your list if you haven't already.

I wonder how long this guy had been in the UK?
Guardian:
A man who has tested positive for coronavirus in Shenzhen, travelled there after flying into Hong Kong from London on Thursday, according to local reports.

The news site Caixin reported that a 35-year-old man who had been working in the UK flew from London to Hong Kong on 27 February and arrived at noon on 28 February.

He then took a ferry to Shekou, near Shenzhen and then drove to Shenzen, it reported. On Saturday he developed symptoms of a cough and fever and went to the hospital where he was confirmed positive for the virus, it said.

I’m interested about the way the symptoms are described - is it routine to go to hospital with these symptoms in other parts of the world, or are people going to hospital because of the fear it is Covid 19, or are the symptoms so severe that the person feels they need to be in hospital?

One piece of advice is for people with small children teach them to open packets with scissors.
Back in my live in nanny days the mum and I both ended up with a bad case of flu for the most part the six kids were fine. Thankfully the two oldest were rather resourceful and being that we lived very remote there was plenty of food.

I've been to 6 supermarkets and two boots in the last 24h all but one boots in tiny village had any hand gel, one supermarket didn't even have any handwash!

All had plenty of food and other stuff. I only saw one guy today with a trolly full of water, lol roll and tins.

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 13:30

@mybrainhurtsalot I recall someone living in China (@ShanghaiDiva maybe) explaining that they don't use GP surgeries like we do and that hospitals are the port of call for most medical issues.

tryingtoprep · 01/03/2020 13:33

The Daily Mail focusing solely on over 60s is worrying. A lot of people will see that and assume most younger people aren't at serious risk. People shouldn't be panicked but they do need to know the true situation, which is that in addition to over 60s, younger people with underlying health conditions are at increased risk. It puts us at even greater risk if people aren't aware and are lulled into a false sense of security.

I'm feeling a bit anxious today. DP commutes on London public transport for work - and he's another one who has to be nagged about hand hygiene. He also dumps his bag on the sofa. I've noticed several DPs and DHs here are Scoffers. It's difficult isn't it!

I also thought the risk increased from the age of 50, not 60?

I’m thinking of buying some chickens. I currently have 2 elderly chickens who don’t lay eggs and was going to let them die and give up on chicken keeping. But I have a large chicken run, house and could get 3 or 4 to keep us in eggs. But then guess I might run out of chicken food!

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 13:35

Thinking about the economic effects I went out spending at my high street independents yesterday. I was thinking what if people go online even more. I am practising social distancing and also not touching my face. My hair is a nuisance tbh. I am thinking about finally having a short cut. Strange times.

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 13:37

Love this thread. Grin Freeze humour?? Mind blown! Genius!

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 13:38

Sympathies @tryingtoprep, I am also married to a tube-commuting scoffer. Although I think he is taking it more seriously now, he just can't let on to me that he is taking it seriously because that would involve him acknowledging that I was right and he was wrong Wink

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 13:38

A little bit of people and union power at the Louvre. Good for them.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 13:39

12 further patients in England have tested positive for COVID-19.

The risk rises with age.

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 13:42

@VivaLeBeaver

An old friend of mine rescued a handful of ex battery chickens that happily laid eggs most days. I can't remember if she had to pay to take them or if they were just given to her because otherwise they'd have been disposed of but maybe it's something you could look in to.

mumoftwodc · 01/03/2020 13:44

Just seen that @ofwarren. I think it's going to start jumping now.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 13:44

@mybrainhurtsalot
Under the current regulations you have to go to the hospital if you have any symptoms or fever.
Most people go to the hospital anyway for routine treatment. There are some local gp type private clinics, but these all had to close back in January. They are now starting to reopen, but cannot see patients with a fever or possible symptoms.

MoonlightMistletoe · 01/03/2020 13:45

Well that escalated quickly. I was expecting a couple not 12!

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 13:45

12 cases since 2pm yesterday
I actually feel sick.
It's all over the country too.
