Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Whoever asked about mushrooms. Yes you can chop and freeze them. I do it all the time

Lumene · 01/03/2020 12:12

The Brits are internationally known for orderly queuing. I reckon we could do a decent job of orderly quarantining.

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 12:19

Viva does your friend actually believe that? Because that's the classic commie line isn't it

Usually in real life, people are loyal to their loved ones first no matter what the state dictates or brain washes into them.

I've seen plenty of Chinese docs speaking these past weeks about the state and how the state is terrified of this getting out of hand because they know they have to be popular...

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 12:21

Avacado that was me!!

I adore mushroom I'm obsessed with them. That's really really useful to know. Thank you and I expect you cook with them straight from frozen?

BeyondReasonablyDoubtsLots · 01/03/2020 12:21

I'm finding the only thing I can't stock up on (too much, anyway) is locusts for the lizard. Seems there is an irony there.

MrsTidyHouse · 01/03/2020 12:21

Should I avoid buying fresh berries? I got some lovely raspberries and blueberries - children’s favourites - this morning, and then stood looking at them at home thinking that each berry would have been individually
picked and handled a day or two ago, then flown here.

avocadoincident · 01/03/2020 12:25

@Springinsight I use them in pasta sauces and lasagnes straight from frozen into the pot.

I've cut all my nails down now. A sad thing to do when you are an ex nail biter and you've struggled to grown them for years. First world problem I know.

RocketQueen21 · 01/03/2020 12:27

Custard powder is another good store cupboard prep to have in and you can get huge bags of powdered whole eggs on Amazon to the poster who was asking earlier 😉

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 12:35

Well she certainly seemed to. She lives in the uk now but was brought up in China, lived there until recently and has family there still. No idea if she’s right or not.

ChipotleBlessing · 01/03/2020 12:39

I think the risk of catching the virus will contain widespread civil unrest if there are country wide measures. But if one area of the country is quarantined and people get scared and want to get somewhere outside that area, then there will definitely be issues.

MinesaPinotPlease · 01/03/2020 12:40

Am close to a town with a case. Definite shift in atmosphere in the supermarkets here.

Wednesday everything in stock.

Today DH went - pot noodles, hand sanitizer, dettol hand wash gone, antibacterial wipes and sprays nearly sold out. Meat was limited. With 2 cabinets empty.

They did though have tasteful big displays of tuna fish, bread mix and tissues!

There has been a def change well Wednesday. Plus place was heaving with the tinned fruit and pasta aisles busy.

Lots of people also peering at dry products in a bewildered way as if they did normally buy them and were wondering what to get.

Now if I could just get my DS at uni to take it seriously and stock pile some food. :(

MinesaPinotPlease · 01/03/2020 12:41
  • as if they did NOT normally buy them
AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 12:42

I'm a postgrad psychology student and it's widely accepted that Eastern cultures are typically more collectivist in terms of their motivations and priorities, compared to much more individualist Western cultures.

I don't think that makes Westerners unquarantine-able though.

TolpuddleFarter · 01/03/2020 12:45

Lurker here! Been prepping all my adult life (though it didn't used to have a name 😀) but have really ramped it up for COVID-19.

Question- are posters planning on sending their DC to school tomorrow? I am not in an affected area (in the sense there has been nothing reported, but I am convinced it is everywhere now) but I feel very reluctant to send them in. My DH thinks it's too soon, and we need to wait.

Any thoughts?

middleager · 01/03/2020 12:48

I think much depends on where you live too.

I live in a city where there have been a few riots before.

My mother recently moved away from our city to a different 'leafy' suburb and says there is a completely different feel - there's affluence, there's a bit of a bubble and the city is not known for having had any riots or civil unrest.

I can't imagine my city would comply with quarantine.
The last riots in the last 10 years were pretty scary.

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 12:55

I'm sending mine in to school tomorrow unless fresh info emerges in the news that suggests confirmed cases locally.

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 13:05

Lots of people also peering at dry products in a bewildered way as if they did normally buy them and were wondering what to get.

GrinGrinGrin

I have been trying not to look like I'm prepping.

EliK · 01/03/2020 13:07

Still sending mine to school until anything local pops up. I know it seems too late at that point but what else can we do when we've got jobs to go to?

Legoandloldolls · 01/03/2020 13:07

I'm near an effected area and my kids are going to school tomorrow. It's a GCSE year for a start. Also there has been no talk of a lockdown so I would be heavily fined with four school age kids.my la are hot on fines.

My dh works in a school so it's very business as normal without any advice to contrary. Not much we can do but I starting to get more concerned. So glad I was ahead of the hand gel shortage now 🙂 even last Monday it was still bountiful which shows how fast things change. I have a months worth of food. I still dont feel ready for it

nellodee · 01/03/2020 13:08

If the internet goes down, my bread making attempts and what I do with lentils could be very experimental.

Legoandloldolls · 01/03/2020 13:09

Agree with not wanting to look prepaired! I will get more of ds favourite noodles and petrol tomorrow night. I'm going to go to the food shops last thing when its quite

EliK · 01/03/2020 13:10

Is the 2pm update the only announcement of new (UK) cases now?

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2020 13:10

Yes, my kids are going to school until either there's a local outbreak or a confirmed case of any of the kids/parents/family in their particular school, even if it's imported.

Funkycats · 01/03/2020 13:11

Gorky me too! Luckily I've been building supplies for a year now, but I always like mixing plenty of fresh stuff with the long life.
Also have snuck bags into the house under cover of darkness so as not to be that bonkers neighbour 😂

Funkycats · 01/03/2020 13:13

Apart from that we're very much business as usual here. We'd always comply with official advice though, which currently seems to be 'wash your hands'.
Watching and waiting.
