Prepping for a pandemic....8

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 21:54

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

To PP who said their DM doesn’t wash her hands when she comes in... My DH is the same! He was actually the one saying we should prep and asked me to order face masks from Amazon (we’ve since decided not to bother but I’m still tempted) and to make sure we have at least enough food for 2 weeks. We actually have enough for at least a mont I’d say. BUT he will come home from work on the train and starting making tea or having a snack without washing his hands and (this really gets me) puts his man bag, that is sometimes on the train floor, on the kitchen work top!!

I’ve RTFT now and it’s v helpful. Thinking of reading the previous ones as only realised this is thread 8!

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 01/03/2020 11:17

Like pp have said, I’d like to echo my thanks for all the sensible discussion and ideas on here. I have a couple of friends who are also prepping, but I’ve stopping raising it with people because I’m fed up of being told that it’s ‘just like flu’...
My concerns are around mine and DH’s health: he’s a teacher with a suppressed immune system, whose medical masks symptoms likes colds etc so he could potentially catch the virus and not know, yet be stuck in school with vastly increased class sizes. His academy never close, even when all locals have done so for snow, and even encourage staff to do 2 hour drives in the snow to get to school - they really don’t care about staff, so I can’t see them closing unless dictated to by the state. I’m asthmatic as well, so don’t really want extra germs being brought home. I do private tuition but am thinking of getting to grips with Skype and offering that for the foreseeable future - several local schools had ski trips at half term to Italy so it’s just a waiting game at the moment to see if any of the staff/become poorly.
We home-ed our kids, and I’m seriously thinking of cancelling all activities etc and just hunkering down at home. I know that the rest of the home-ed community will think I’ve totally lost the plot, and they would have to know because I run many of the activities, but I’m trying to weigh up the risk of a 75 minute multisport and swim session with 20 other families versus people thinking I’m bonkers 😁 We live very rurally so could feasibly still get fresh air on bike rides/walk down the lane without seeing anyone each day, surviving on my stockpile (I started for Brexit so am well prepared in that respect) and we’ll cope in terms of just being with each other on a daily basis. I’m trying to put pressure on DH to get signed off work - it’s a horrid, pressured place to work anyway, he’s totally miserable there, and nearing the end of his career but is struggling to find a job elsewhere due to his age, so I’m thinking it doesn’t matter what his attendance record is like from now on, or am I going over-the-too with this?????
We have no family members who could or would have the kids if anything were to happen to us (no Will cus we’ve never been able to make a decision regarding the kids, and although different, well-meaning friends have offered over the years, how do you choose someone who you know has a lovely heart but whom your kids would be utterly unhappy with...but that’s kind of a separate issue... all the advice coming out over the last day for those aged over 60, so I presume those at high risk which includes DH and myself, is to avoid crowded places - we can only do that if we all stay home????
Oh wise mumsnetters, talk me down if I’m slowly losing the plot, please!

avocadoincident · 01/03/2020 11:18

@BrieAndChilli yes I'm in Chepstow. Apparently b and m have a delivery of hand gel today so I'll let you know!

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 11:19

I just can’t conceive how lock down or quarantine of whole cities will work

The uk is not loyal to the state like the people of China are to the Chinese government. There are a lot of young, disenfranchised people, a lot of poverty, a lot of “disobedience” (even in seeing people brushing off advice on the current situation)

People won’t do as they are told. People will break quarantine. I watched the 2011 riots from my window. London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham are not obedient or compliant cities

BunnytheBee · 01/03/2020 11:21

@permanentlyfrazzled1 Could you / DH speak to GP about whether his immune system means he should be signed off sick now? If not then, no, I don’t think he should do that just because he doesn’t like the job any more. He could hand in his notice and leave though...

ShanghaiDiva · 01/03/2020 11:23

I am not sure it is because the Chinese are loyal to the state, but rather that we are all aware in China that consequences for non compliance would be severe:

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 11:25

I don't understand this idea that the British population are somehow uncontrollable as though this is somehow a unique and insurmountable thing? The Italians aren't living under a communist regime and I haven't seen anything to suggest they are doing anything other than quietly get on with it in locked down towns- why should we be any different?

I think I read that it's a 3 month prison sentence for leaving a lock down area in Italy without permission and I suspect similar would be put in place here if we went down the lock down road.

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 11:30

can I freeze mushrooms chopped up

Banana0pancakes · 01/03/2020 11:31

Yeah, I agree. I think once it ramps up here and people know someone who knows someone who is suffering, we'll all become a lot more willing to quietly bide our time away at home where it's safe.
At least that's what I'm hoping, dh is in the police and I despair to think of him rounding up corona ridden rioters.

BunnytheBee · 01/03/2020 11:31

can I freeze mushrooms chopped up

I don’t see why not

AlohaMolly · 01/03/2020 11:34

I’ve just told DP he needs to have a word with his elderly mother about avoiding busy places and he laughed at me. FIL is on his way back from Australia next week and no one seems concerned about it.

AlohaMolly · 01/03/2020 11:35

Also, you can freeze hummus! I’ve just portioned mine out and frozen it in ice cube trays.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 01/03/2020 11:37

Lots of hand gel in 3 of my local Aldi’s (North East) only 42p and 73% alcohol

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 11:38

Yes thanks for the correction @ShanghaiDiva

So the uk cities would need as much if not more “incentive” to comply

TipseyTorvey · 01/03/2020 11:39

Well it's in my town now. Got another order coming today I've named 'in case the adults get sick and the kids need to feed themselves' so lots of nice pot noodles, cereal bars, rice pudding and crisps. Feeling resigned to it coming now.

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 01/03/2020 11:39

Bunny yes, he’s going to speak to his specialist nurse tomorrow with a view to getting a gp appointment tomorrow as well. I probably didn’t explain very well: his immune system definitely does mean he is high risk for this virus, which is why I want him signed off - he’s not wanting to use it as an escape route from the school, it’s me who is seeing it as a temporary option, but the truth is he is very depressed and not coping, and the added risk he could be in by continuing to go to work could push him over the edge, if not me 🥴 It’s all very well the govt talking about increasing class sizes, but are they going to protect those staff who are high risk by sending them home in the first place - highly unlikely - it will be a case of keeping plodding in until you test positive, by which time, you’ll have infected countless more people anyway. He is trying to find a new job, and has been since the academy family restructured and took his management responsibilities off teaching staff and gave them to non-teaching staff to save money, over 18 months ago. He’s applied for countless jobs, all of which he’s well over-qualified for, and has done many times previously in other schools, and we’ve seen his references which are excellent, but he’s not even being called for interview: he’s now too old and schools just want young and cheap as possible. So, he’s got a lot on his plate mentally, on top of already coping with two chronic illnesses, yet rarely has day off, and it’s actually me who’s pushing for him to go get signed off.

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 11:41

@AvocadoOwl I’m not suggesting that the whole uk is uncontrollable. Cities run down by years of austerity on the other hand...I live in a deprived area and I guarantee that prison sentences are no threat.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:42

In the Guardian
The worst-case scenario is looking increasingly likely. We’ve now seen cases on six continents, apparently “silent” – that is, at least partly asymptomatic – chains of human-to-human transmission both inside and outside China, with additional countries reporting cases within the last week – bringing the total to 47 – and new, accelerating outbreaks in Iran, Italy and South Korea.

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 11:42

The uk is not loyal to the state like the people of China are to the Chinese government.

This. My Chinese friend said loyalty starts off with country, then (communist) party, family, neighbours/colleagues/friends. Self is last.

I think most people in the UK would put themselves and their family above their country.

MorbidMuch · 01/03/2020 11:43

I've been lurking on the last couple of threads. I'd prepped for Brexit (twice!) then had let supplies run down quite a bit.

Went to Tesco as it opened this morning and replenished, focusing on cleaning products, toilet roll, toiletries and cat food (I also don't want to be dealing with an angry elderly cat if I have to cut down / change her food). Lots of good deals on too and it looked like plenty of other people doing likewise, all in sensible quantities and not panic buying.

The shelves were pretty full, just the odd thing, like one particular type of hand sanitizer, was out of stock.

This has also given me the push to get wills sorted for me and DH. We've meant to for ages and I can get them free through my union for both of us, so no real excuse bar laziness / not wanting to think about it.

NatoPMT · 01/03/2020 11:44

@Banana0pancakes I think a lot of that will depend on how the government plan to feed people who have no money and aren’t able to work due to quarantine. Let alone people who have no work to start with

permanentlyfrazzled1 · 01/03/2020 11:45

Morbid good to hear there’s still stuff on the shelves hear you! I’ve got an Asda delivery coming this afternoon but expecting to have to go out tomorrow and fill in the gaps. It’s sometimes situations like this that’s makes us remember we need to sort Wills/insurance/other important documents, isn’t it.

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 11:49

I think I read that it's a 3 month prison sentence for leaving a lock down area in Italy without permission and I suspect similar would be put in place here if we went down the lock down road.

Aren't prisons here full to busting?

MsJaneAusten · 01/03/2020 12:04

'in case the adults get sick and the kids need to feed themselves'

Ah man. I had not thought of this. My stocks definitely require adult intervention.

Buys more cereal...
