Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

The school at the centre of the Swansea case has been named as Bishops Gore Comp. Theyre not closing and haven't been cleaned over the weekend 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m feeling quite apprehensive today. I’m a teacher (in quite a diverse school where lots of the kids were traveling and back in home countries etc over the recent half term). Particularly annoyed that the assumption is that the schools will remain open and teachers will have huge class sizes to keep everything running! I assume that if we do get a bad outbreak over here then this will change due to pressure from the public, as it’s just not feasible! DH has been told by his company that if there is an outbreak they can all work remotely so at least there’s that. I’m more preparing for us all getting it rather than not, as we can’t really self isolate by choice (I have to work, kids have to go to grandparents and nursery). I just hope that if we all contract it that it’s staggered so at any given time either DH or I is functional and able to care for DC.

One thing I have done is get the kids onto vitamins. Should have done it ages ago, but if we don’t have fresh fruit coming in it seems prudent!

I’m going to try and find some powdered egg and powdered milk tomorrow if they’re still available, where would they be in a supermarket?

Puppycorn · 01/03/2020 10:12

Neome I think this school closure thing is very unlikely to happen.. it will be done only as a last resort to contain and prevent. Personally I think the school closures are appropriate if the total cases exceed 100 or atleast 1 case being reported in the local town we live whichever happens first.

DD’s school is very strict about attendance and doesn’t like anything below 99%. I don’t think they will authorise it unless if one of the parent themselves test positive and still show up at their doors with their reports along with two hazmat suited witnesses from the nhs. 😂

Ordered and received couple of boxes of disposable gloves from screwfix last week.

Banana, tinned fruit does have vitamins left in. I've got peaches ( mostly!), plus pineapple and pears.

Frozen fruit and veg can often be higher in nutrients than fresh that has been sitting about. Sorry if I'm preaching to the converted.

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 10:26

Just ordered an oxygen saturation monitor. Had been dithering over getting one for ages but saw one on Amazon for £10.99 so went for it.

Banana770 · 01/03/2020 10:30

Felicity - yes but they’re really bloody fussy! The problem is the texture is so different with tinned stuff, I tried some tinned raspberries once but they were mushy, I guess because they’re meant for trifles and things. Frozen fruit is better and they’ve eaten that before, but I don’t have a huge amount of freezer space. They don’t like pineapple or peaches, they mainly eat bananas, apples, berries (so I’ve bought frozen), grapes.

@Banana770 I found the dried milk powder near the coffees/ teas aisle at Sainsbury’s. It’s called marvel. There was also nestle nido at the world foods section if that helps. Powdered eggs I have no idea but I use the dr.Oetkers powdered egg whites as well as egg replacer from Holland and barrett at home.Yes to kids vitamins and stock up on some fizzy vitamin c +zinc tabs.

@Flyingsouthwiththeswallows
Ocado/Waitrose don’t have half of their usual stock. I ordered the supplies from Sainsbury's.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 01/03/2020 10:38

@MyHairIsSoapy Are you planning to pay your cleaner as for lots of us, losing pay, especially weekly pay has a huge impact especially if you're taking this action before official advice to do so. I assume you have budgeted to pay her for working anyway so sunk cost fallacy etc) I'm not being snarky, I completely understand why you want to do this, but I think it's important we all bear in mind the impact our actions have on others and treat people as we would like to be treated ourselves.

For those of us that use public transport, I have been disposing of my tissues rather ostentatiously as people like to fight on our local buses for any reason anyway in a ziplock bag and closing it and also using handgel. But I'm not going to go out unless essential under the circumstances.

I am also going to contact the hospitals where I have appointments to ask if they still want me to attend. I wonder if they may be cancelled shortly anyway. Mine are mostly review (apart from current respiratory prob which is a whole other nightmare!)

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 10:41

freezing mushroom

Can I.... Chop mushroom and freeze it, ie for use in risotto?

Springinsight · 01/03/2020 10:42

webuilt

If I had a cleaner I'd pay her.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 01/03/2020 10:44

Oooh I sounded a bit pompous there hair sorry I really didn't mean to Blush I am worrying myself that DH's employer will lay them off temporarily and I know he won't be paid (he's agency contracted). It's a worry. He's had lots of ZHC in the past and has taken on cleaning jobs too himself to make up the shortfall, it's worrying that these will also be in short supply under the circumstances).

Thank fuck for the full cupboards!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 10:46

@LizzyButton Great advice especially

Schedule checking media to limited times. There's life to be getting on with.

Live each day carefully but as joyfully as you can. None of us know whether we have minutes, hours, weeks, months or many many years ahead.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 10:47

@AvocadoOwl do you have a link. I'm after one

MamaFlintstone · 01/03/2020 10:52

I’m not cancelling my cleaner unless I find out they’ve just been on holiday to northern Italy or something, that’s a step too far for me. They’re no more of a risk than anyone else who I come into contact with. (Probably less, in fact, because they spend all day in gloves for handling cleaning products, and washing their hands between tasks!)

AvocadoOwl · 01/03/2020 10:52

I agree @WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles and it's an important thing to consider.

I was thinking about this the other day. We pay for a number of things each month that we might not be able to benefit from due to possible restrictions: cleaner, kids riding lessons, membership of a small privately owned gym, other extra curricular stuff the kids do. I value all of these things and will happily continue to pay for them whether we use them or not, because otherwise they might not still be there when this is over. The money for these things is already budgeted for so we wouldn't be 'losing' money, just not getting the benefit in the short term.

Before I get shouted down I realise that not everyone is in a financial position to do this, and I'm not criticising anyone unable to continue paying for such things, but we should all consider these decisions very carefully if we want the businesses we value to survive.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 01/03/2020 10:56

@AvocadoOwl Thank you. I think this is sensible.

avocadoincident · 01/03/2020 11:01

Great no egg recipe with store cupboard ingredients for pancakes. It uses plant milk but any milk would do. We've just eaten out body weight in them and I can personally vouch for their greatness!

AlanRickmanslovely · 01/03/2020 11:01

Does anyone understand why we are not being told what towns confirmed cases are in? I understand patients shouldn't be named but why aren't we allowed to know locations?

DoomMerchant · 01/03/2020 11:03

Prob trying to avoid panic I would think

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 11:04

#Marr: Is it conceivable cities could be quarantined to fight spread of #coronavirus?

Health Secretary Matt Hancock: "There’s clearly a huge economic and social downside to that but we don’t take anything off the table at this stage"

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 11:10

Banana mine are similar, the best received have been sliced peaches or pear quarters on top of cake or with yoghurt as a dessert.

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 11:15

I was intending to get some thin washable black gloves for when out and about. Anyone have any suggestions?
