Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

@Nutella
I’m a dentist and it’s business as usual at the moment. We had this on Friday
www.england.nhs.uk/ourwork/eprr/coronavirus/
The risk would be low to you unless your dentist/ nurse is incubating it, which is less likely now than in a month.
On a personal level I am hoping schools close which will give me an excuse to down tools to look after DS. I’m really worried because we are at greater risk (the aerosol).
On the other hand I worked full time through swine flu and didn’t get it.

WorriedMam2020 · 01/03/2020 07:05

I have a tooth that needs sorting and have an appt on Friday. Thought I should get it out of the way. Feel risk is ok atm as they with be wearing masks, but dc will have to go to nursery while I am there.

I am also a bit worried about GPs and medical staff there not wearing masks during consults, and do they sanitise all equipment between patients (for listening to chest etc)?? I have never seen them do it :(

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 07:20

Thanks Mammoth. I guess I just don't want to get it done!!! Any excuse. Grin

mam2020. I am too lazy to go that far. ;-) Admire your thoroughness!! I guess a quick spritz of the dettol aerosol might work? Don't go crazy and gas yiurself though with aerosol fumes. Grin

I am hopeful the proactive testing of people with respiratory illnesses will help limit spread. Apparently that is how Berkshire case identified. Not self referred.

@WorriedMam2020 It’s absolutely understandable and I think having a telephone consultation is the way to go. I have one for myself too coming up next week at the local surgery . Chose telephone consultation two weeks ago just to avoid going to the gp’s because the isolation facility was put up within few miles radius from where we live and people from the epicentre were in isolation here. Now glad I did that.

@Dennis - I’ve stashed a bit of long life snacks and it includes dry fruits, nuts, breakfast bars and two step prep items (like the ones that can’t be reach it -have it straight away type) Some of it includes microwave popcorn, nut butters, breadsticks, raw poppadoms and potato crinkle far far , ella’s kitchen puréed veggies and fruits for dd etc

I can't find anywhere else other than the Daily Mail where it is being reported that WHO said this. So did they say it?

That letter from the school in the mail is exactly why I withdrew my ill child.
The head apologises for not telling them sooner...
They don't have to inform you if there is suspicion, only if someone is diagnosed.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 01/03/2020 07:48

Thanks @Puppycorn great suggestions

I also have a broken tooth - I think the whole thing needs to come out which is why I’m putting it off - but hate going to the dentist at the best of times. I’m thinking I should go though as I currently have free dental due to being on maternity and if it does start hurting but COVID has taken hold, it might no t even be possible

Feel really sorry for doctors/dentists and other frontline/customer facing workers right now

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 08:01

I agree about thoughts being with frontline staff whatever the role - shops, HCPS. Thank you all. Flowers

MinesaPinotPlease · 01/03/2020 08:01

At home with a streaming cold this weekend. Do NOT underestimate the number of tissues you are going to need folks Hmm

I have gone through 15 packs of pocket tissues in 36 hours.

Sending DH off today to stock up and I think the big boxes of 100+ make more sense than the small individual packs.

Orchidflower1 · 01/03/2020 08:02

@ofwarren do you know if the WHO have told over 60s to avoid crowded places? I saw it somewhere but I can’t remember where! Also I know you only put info out from verified sources. I read this earlier today ( minus my glasses!) and cant recall where!

I’m trying to persuade DM to take better precautions so I bit of evidence would help. Thanks

EnidBlyton · 01/03/2020 08:02

just wondered why people are not advocating using gloves, either disposable or not

Dennisreynoldsduster · 01/03/2020 08:03

I’ve only seen that on Daily Mail so far orchid happy to be corrected though

avocadoincident · 01/03/2020 08:04

Hello everyone. I've only a few top up items to get like sweeties for me and pepparamis for husband. I'd also like some frozen avocados as we make a lovely avocado pasta from the Bosh guys on Facebook. Can't find any though.

I've looked at all our normal meals and bought in supplies for everything so that if we are all wrong here nothing will go to waste.

I've frozen grated courgette and sliced celery for our usual staples. Frozen raspberries too for porridge. I've bought bananas to let purposely go brown and then freeze for banana bread.
I've bought a tonne of oats for porridge, flapjacks and banana bread recipes.

Our lidls has sold out of hand gel, yeast and bread flour but Tesco has the baking supplies. No hand gel anywhere in the town. We are in Monmouthshire.

Happy St David's Day/ Dydd Gwŷl Dewi Hapus to any Welsh preppers here 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿.

ofwarren · 01/03/2020 08:06

Orchid, it's in that Daily Mail article. It was said by Dr Margaret Harris who is a WHO spokesperson on an interview she did for BBC radio.
She said:
WHO spokeswoman Dr Margaret Harris said that consequently older people needed to consider changing their day-to-day routines because 'avoiding catching this virus is the best outcome'. Advising them to stay off tubes, trains and buses, she said: 'If you are on a transport system, you are likely to be squeezed in with other people.'

Football matches and other sports events were also best avoided because of close proximity to those who might be harbouring the virus.

People should even think twice about going to busy shops and supermarkets, she said. 'Rather than going to the shops to get things, think about everything you can order remotely,' she urged.

Dr Harris said droplets containing coronavirus could travel as far as 10ft (3m) from a cough or sneeze - so ideally people should keep that distance from others.

Instead of going to their GP for routine matters like non-urgent appointments, blood test results and repeat prescriptions, they should use the phone or have a video consultation instead.

'If you can do a remote consultation, that's brilliant,' she said, as surgeries and hospitals were more likely than other places to be visited by those sick with the virus.

Pegase · 01/03/2020 08:08

Waitrose normally do frozen avocado. Or big Sainsbury's/Tesco. I always use fresh would be a no go in disaster situation. What can you use frozen for?

avocadoincident · 01/03/2020 08:16

@Pegase
It's a simple avo pasta is usually use fresh avocados for but I'm sure frozen will do is you are stuck in.

In a food processor put: avo, lemon juice, ground seeds (we use hemp but any will do), salt and pepper, basil (fresh or dried), and I add nutritional yeast for Vitamin B12, a good glug of olive oil and half a cup of water and whizz it up to a creamy sauce. I fry onions and chickpeas and broccoli in a deep frying pan then add the sauce and some tagliatelle. Its gorgeous

Dennisreynoldsduster · 01/03/2020 08:16

You can get frozen avocado in Iceland and farm foods as well.

nannynick · 01/03/2020 08:17

Wonder what Dr Harris would say about going to Dances and Balls. Some older people and some not so old go to those. Also gym classes such as BodyVive, Zumba, Pilates.

Any gathering of people in one room/community centre is surely a potential place for spread of the virus.

Lumene · 01/03/2020 08:22

If yeast is all sold out but you have flour and end up on lockdown/quarantine then learning to make a sourdough starter could be a good project. Entertainment plus tasty food.

Lots of step by step guides online.

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 08:23

nanny Any gathering of people in one room/community centre is surely a potential place for spread of the virus. - completely agree. Church strikes me as a risk too...

ofwarren thanks for posting over 60s info from WHO.

Someone could make a mint from making crafting kits for the over 60s. Or cbeebies art mags etc. Or a v simple group Skype or WhatsApp grouo for older gen so they can avoid the loneliness.
