Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Is anyone else concerned at the proportion of confirmed cases working in either schools or as GP's etc. Are people in these kinds of roles more likely to be carrying it as a higher proportion of say school workers would have travelled over half term?

Hello, new to this section, I really appreciate all the information! We’re in Utah, USA, and have been practical preppers for awhile (mostly snowstorms and power outages). It looks like at least where we live we’re about two months behind the UK as far as supplies, etc. This week Thursday I went out for a supply top up and there was still hand gel, hand wipes, etc. I went back for some groceries today and there was no hand gel or wipes left at this particular store, no UHT milk, etc.
Just trying to be sensible in a unsettled time.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/03/2020 01:16

@wrenna Office Depot/Office Max is where I found mine today. They’re out of some of the large size containers of hand gel but not the smaller ones (in my area). Way better prices than amazon. Also had the Clorox wipes as well as industrial brands in stock and in bulk.

Wrenna · 01/03/2020 01:48

Great idea Saltines! I was at Target and they had gel and wipes Thursday, were out Friday (forgotten something). Glad I got mine already. Walmart was out of both today.

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 03:49

Staples have Purell available to order for delivery in a couple of weeks. Good call on office supplies but most is showing out of stock. I read in an earlier thread that sanitisers are being diverted to the NHS so I haven't ordered much. Awake and kind of anxious. I wonder what the next few weeks will bring.

VenetoResident · 01/03/2020 03:58

Something to consider buying might be a few packs of paper plates, bowls and spoons. Maybe extra cereal? Considering the parents are more likely to be ill than the kids it makes sense to make it easier for kids to prep their own 'meals'. My DS lived on jars of cold baby food for a few days once when I had noroviris and DH was away.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 01/03/2020 05:51

Does anyone else feel like they are living in a parallel universe?! I don’t know if I’m being stupidly anxious but other people are just carrying on as though absolutely nothing is happening.

Im fretting about ds’s hospital appointment in London as I don’t want to take him on the train/tube and when I mentioned it to my friend she looked at me like I had two heads.
I can’t decide if it’s better to go (end of March) or postpone it - as I’m thinking things will be worse by April time...

I swing between feeling ok and feeling really anxious. Can’t decide whether to step away from the threads or not as I’m mainly prepped... but now I’m prepped it’s like I don’t have that to focus on and keep me calm!

WorriedMam2020 · 01/03/2020 05:55

Hi all. Been watching for a while and really appreciating the advice and discussion around what I have been thinking about. I have a young child with asthma who has been in ICU with a virus previously so v concerned about them getting it or the availability of a PICU bed if necessary (& all the logistics that goes with that). Have a small stash and planning to add to it when I get paid this week.

I work pt in a very public facing min wage job and considering taking a break from that for a while to help with my anxiety and to minimise risks of catching it.

Most of my family think I am verging in crazy being so worried 🙄 so such a relief to have this thread! Thank you.

I’m a total germophobe anyway and had a bit of a Brexit prep ready to adding to it now.

Sharing anger and concern about the UK governments lack of action and leadership on this. Got really angry at Boris talking about it on the news on Friday, it was like he was half smiling about it. Fuck him and his baby news, fucking do your job!

WorriedMam2020 · 01/03/2020 06:00

Dennis Yes!!!! Totally. I just can’t understand when people talk about their holidays coming up etc?! And I am awful in public transport anyway (because of my LOs risk) so the thought of it now - eek! We have a central London hospital appointment in April which I may have to postpone or request a telephone consult instead. I would def drive if we were to go even though it will take hours longer and cost the Earth in parking!

Also, when we first came out of ICU I was a wreck in supermarkets and would leg it if someone sneezed, and kept ds in the pram with the rain over on inside. I’m going to start doing the same again soon. I never put him in a trolley anyway

WorriedMam2020 · 01/03/2020 06:03

I’ve registered for some of the OpenLearn courses on infection/public health just to read up on it a bit. Is that some this useful to do or will it just make you more anxious? Thought it might help with reading/understanding some of the journal output on covid.

NewYearNewTwatName · 01/03/2020 06:10

The BBC news on tv on their scroll bar, (before 6am) were quoting Trump that it was seriously I'll woman in her 50s that died? I thought it was confirmed it was actually a man?

It comes across as really really sloppy journalism.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 01/03/2020 06:28

@WorriedMam2020 I think those sound like sensible precautions! We don’t drive unfortunately and I feel like a taxi will be just as risky. I’m tempted to ask my dad to drive us if we do go... it’s a heart clinic so hopefully we won’t go in through the main part of the hospital so less risk...

Dennisreynoldsduster · 01/03/2020 06:30

Anyone got any ideas for healthy long life snacks?
Biscuits and crisps and chocolates mysteriously don’t seem to last in this house Grin

I’ve got to go out to the chemist and Lidl tomorrow as don’t want to dig into our sticks just yet, can’t say I’m looking forward to it.

I’m going to do an online shop for my folks too as I’m worried they won’t have enough stocks - bet UHT etc is sold out

Donkeykong20 · 01/03/2020 06:30

@NewYearNewTwatName
Didn't see it on the news myself but from what I gather from posts here last night, Trump got it wrong

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 06:34

Ref face masks again. Even the surgical, thin ones, will stop you touching your face which could be good.

Funkycats · 01/03/2020 06:36

Dennis if it's stressing you out already, and your dad will drive you, do that.
Snacks don't last in my house, but ingredients for biscuits and cakes do.
Also if you have stackable boxes it's worth putting sweeties in the bottom box...

Dennisreynoldsduster · 01/03/2020 06:40

@Funkycats yes I think I will ask him. See what he says. If not I will postpone I think, it’s a reassurance appointment rather than anything urgent but I don’t want to lose the appointment IYSWIM as it’s our first one after a referral.
I have a telephone consultation on Tuesday so I will chat to them then and see what they say.

Good tip about boxes, I need to order some plastic boxes as we have loads of stuff under the stairs and I keep thinking about how awful it would be if we got mice or had a leak and it got ruined!

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 06:46

Ref hand sanitizer etc, I have a large bottle of Nilaqua by the door and get everyone to use on the way out and way in. I also have their surface spray which I won't hesitate to spray on my front door should I feel the need!

I have Milton wipes for out and about.

I have an order to cokkect of Nasalguard. Who knows if it works. But, if it does, worth it. Supposed to stop viruses even making it into your nose. Plus some First Defence and the stuff you squirt at the back of your throat (can't remeber brand name àtm). The latter two are for when you feel a cold coming on. Bit like garglng with Listerine. Should cover all bases... nearly!!!

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 01/03/2020 06:46

@VenetoResident I made a big batch of my youngest's favourite meal, froze it in portions and taught her how to use the microwave, just in case. Also bought lots of muesli/granola bar things, jelly and packet soups to feed healthy child and unwell adults, just in case we were both to be quite ill at once.

NewYearNewTwatName · 01/03/2020 06:53

Donkeykong20 I know Trump got it wrong. So why are quoting him? and not reporting it correctly? Why quote the wrong facts? Or if they really want to quote Trump why not put the correct information next to it.

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 06:53

Dennis I am with you on concerns re travelling into London esp on tube. If treatment is not necessary I'd delay going if poss. Also, consider what happens at the Hospital you have appt at. So, I'd be more likely to avoid if it was treating lots of CV19 patients, or maybe if it had an A&E. Also, you don't necessarily need to use tube to get around London. There are lots of fun/interesting bus routes, but again, I suspect could be a bit germy, but not as bad as tube.

I have a filling which needs replacing and toothache... I don't want to get it down ATM due to CV19 worries. On the other hand, I may get an abscess...Blush

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 06:54

Going to start sorting out tins and packets and make sure DH knows what meal options are or he will go for all the gòod stuff first. HmmBlush

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 06:55

Even at the best of times he believes there is no food in the house, even with a fully stocked fridge. Hmm

NutellaQuest · 01/03/2020 06:59

Ref snacks etc. I have told peeps that if they eat the good stuff now it simply won't be replaced. Am trying to hide it though!

I got a pile of sweet and savoury rice cakes. Plus, I love the protein Ryvita. I think the others think it is poison, but that's up to them! They can be on bread baking duty!

WorriedMam2020 · 01/03/2020 07:01

Nutella that sounds good. I have a bottle of sanitiser by the door and always leave my bag and coat there and tbh yay always change my clothes and ds if we’ve come into contact with seats etc anyway (I was starting to relax about this more but not anymore!). The detail spray is a good should and I’ll be getting more this week. Or use a spray bottle if it gets sold out.

Would it be useful to talk about other contact points we might not have considered? I try to always wipe down my phone, keys, steering wheel and car controls/seatbelt etc. Purse and cards. Hands after petrol station.

From now on I’ll be using self serve rather than cashier.

Also will be choosing stock from the back of shelves that hasn’t been sneezed in at the front.

(I was reading that sneeze radius can be up to 8m or something like that and droplets can linger for minutes)

What other contact points should we be considering?
Zips on clothes? Shopping bag handles... ANYTHING that dc touch :D

I pretty much don’t want anyone touching anything that I come into contact with now!

Also not doing very well with chocolate in my stash... think I might have to put it in a noisy bag in dc room so that I can’t get to it once they are asleep!
