Prepping for a pandemic....8

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 21:54

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

OP posts:
GorkyMcPorky · 29/02/2020 22:37

@KarmaKhameleon because apparently hand gel with alcohol content over 70% is effective in killing viruses.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 22:43

Even the world health organisation advises to use hand gel. The alcohol kills viruses.

OneTimePrepper · 29/02/2020 22:46

@KarmaKhameleon Effectiveness of alcohol gel depends on the type of virus. It works on this one as long over a certain alcohol content. Cannot remember how much. Perhaps 70%.

All seems to be kicking off in Syria at this very moment. What a crap year 2020 is.

BunnytheBee · 29/02/2020 22:48

DH thinks we need face masks. What do you all think? If so what do I buy??

I have done a big shop today to cover our food, pet and DIY needs, should we be stuck in the house for a few weeks but for the time being we are commuting to to work on busy trains

NatoPMT · 29/02/2020 22:50

@itsnotjustflu ...same

I ordered respirator masks off eBay plus replacement filters around 6 weeks ago - neither turned up

Not bothered either 😁

VivaLeBeaver · 29/02/2020 22:53

What’s kicking off in Syria? Coronavirus or fighting?

CalmYoBadSelf · 29/02/2020 22:53

@HasaDigaEebowai Our local B&Q has shown 16 packs of masks in stock for the last 3-4 weeks even though they have none. Other branches all show out of stock

We saw friends this week who returned from holiday via Singapore airport with rotten colds. They rang 111, were tested and are negative but were not particularly impressed with how the system worked

I've got a few bits in now so DH and I could manage but the menus would get interesting if any of the DCs (all grown up) came home Grin

Fairylights2021 · 29/02/2020 22:57

Think I’m all prepped now. Feels really strange waiting to see what’s going to happen now. Did a top up food shop of fresh stuff tonight, the super market was so quiet at 8pm. Fridge and freezer are both almost full and bought extra yoghurts, hummous, long lasting root veg, onions, apples, oranges etc to cover the next two weeks. Got loads of cheese, butter etc in the fridge. My intention is to continue to shop until it really ramps up or is local but to shop for the following two weeks rather than just one so we don’t have to dip into our stash right away. I’ve meal planned and allocated a specific number of everything I’ve got stashed away per week. I’ve also found the method of freezing stuff in foil containers then taking them out and placing them in freezer bags so they can be stacked. Are many people buying water? I’ve picked up a few bottles but only enough for a few days. At what point would people think about taking their child out of school? I have one reception age child. Also wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone on this thread it’s such a lovely, balanced and informative thread.

BunnytheBee · 29/02/2020 23:00

OK I’m new to this and haven’t RTFT but I will 😬

echobench · 29/02/2020 23:03

DH has gone full prepper and is proposing we buy an oxygen concentrator in case one of us needs oxygen and hospitals are full... TBF it is his field so he’d know what to do with it, and we’d be able to sell it on afterwards, but that seems a step too far even to me.

NutellaQuest · 29/02/2020 23:04

I have a load of FP3 disposable masks. they are hot to wear. I can't imagine wanting to use them except in extreme circumstances. A bit like having a duvet around your face. Blush No idea how builders manage to wear them regularly.

I have a couple of the DIY ones too. Prefer the look. Haven't tried. Filters are replaceable. I don't know how often you have to change tho. Again, saving for v extreme circs.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 23:04

You will struggle to find masks right now bunny but you need ffp2 or ffp3 masks.
Have a look at wickes or B&Q or Screwfix.
There are serious shortages though.

NutellaQuest · 29/02/2020 23:06

echo I can see why an oxygen concentrator would be worth having but not going to invest just yet.

echobench · 29/02/2020 23:07

On a lighter note (?) I have already got mini eggs in the stash and will now buy proper full size eggs as well.

Government inaction is driving me crazy. Lack of meetings, lack of info, lack of planning. PHE isn’t even telling people not to shake hands. And as for various celebs doing macho “I don’t care about COVID”... for heaven’s sake!

NutellaQuest · 29/02/2020 23:07

We've just had store cupboard curry. v nice.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 23:09

We had a fray bentos pie for dinner 😂 it was nice actually!

itsnotjustflu · 29/02/2020 23:11

Hi @Fairylights2021 we are also stocking up as we go along. Replacing what we can. If you are a meat eater I can recommend Morrisons for longer life fresh food. The boxed meats are good. As is Parma ham, chorizo. Just concentrating on keeping the food full of longer life food as freezer and cupboards all full. If the worse happens I'm meal planning. Also cravendale milk has good fridge life and lactose free milk as well. We have loads of water in. Buying those bigger bottles. We have said we will their our six year old out when first case comes to our town but equally might do if we end up with high levels of cases going up rapidly. It is a lovely thread. Glad I've started chatting to you all

itsnotjustflu · 29/02/2020 23:13

@echobench wow that is

brainfogg · 29/02/2020 23:14

@Motorina thanks that’s quite reassuring actually. I’ve read so many conflicting things about them so unless I see any within my budget or preferably below, I probably won’t get any. It’s definitely more important that front line medical staff get them.

echobench · 29/02/2020 23:22

In DH’s defence you can get oxygen concentrators for the price of a few masks if they’re 50 quid each!!

LightofMine · 29/02/2020 23:45

Berkshire case was an employee at a Reading school (just in the news). Can’t see anything else on the exact locations of the other cases yet though.

Puppycorn · 29/02/2020 23:47

Lurker here. Thank you for some valuable inputs. Helped me a lot as a newbie. Have now prepped a small stock of essentials and meds. Have a reception age dd (would be able to take care of her if the school closes -we have loads of books to homeschool for few weeks anyways as I work from home often and dh can work few weeks from home too) It was already very worrying to send her off to school last week as I know few parents who have travelled abroad for the hols that have the sniffles already but heard there was no sort of checks or any advice even in airports .Raised my concern to school and then received a newsletter yesterday stating the government guidelines (which obv is not very helpful as there is no plan for any closures even if someone tests positive) but I don’t want to risk it as dd, dh and myself all have low immunity at home. I have no idea about the fine system and doubt if they would approve her absence if I have to make her stay home. So far we are practicing good hand hygiene etc but I would really like to know what other mum’s think (am I worrying too much unnecessarily in sending her to school?!) and if it gets worse when will you ideally stop sending kids to school to contain the spread?
Thank you very much for all the helpful information and it’s a lot of relief to find like minded people here!

BunnytheBee · 29/02/2020 23:49

Thanks @ofwarren I want to B&Q today but oddly didn’t think of it there! 🤦‍♀️

I also meant to see if they had any hand san in the supermarket, though I do have some

BunnytheBee · 29/02/2020 23:50

Then again I have a job that allows me to work from home. Usually I’d only do one day a week but thinking it could get to the stage where I work from home for a while

Also have a colleague coming back from Tenerife this weekend!

I’m a germaphobe at the best of times...
